Concerning Democratic plans to bring back the military draft?
Of course, it bears remembering that we encountered this kind of commentary when the suspicion was that the Bush Administration would bring back the draft, but the Administration never made any moves to do so–not that this lack of Administration action did anything to cause its critics and accusers to admit error. Those same critics and accusers will likely not say anything now that a Democratic Congressional effort is being made to resurrect the draft, notwithstanding the fact that their likely silence will expose them to the charges of hypocrisy they richly deserve to be the brunt of.

Praying (Diary) Friday, January 16th at 7:47AM EST (link)…that the main reason I’ve read is that the libs are concerned that there are disproportionately (the buzz word of the month) more blacks and other minorities employed in our current military, so by re-instating the draft, they could conduct some good old liberal social engineering and get that straightened out. Let’s remember that we have an ALL VOLUNTARY military. Yes, these are risky jobs, but they are solid, secure jobs. I guess there are too many black and minority people actually working for their paychecks, instead of sitting around waiting for the government to hand them a check. Or, maybe when the liberals pass “don’t ask, don’t tell” they can force all of us to share a bunker with their blatantly gay or lesbian soldiers. Either way, it’s a dumb idea. But that goes without saying…

The real impetus for this has to be something different. Maybe it’s because Rangel realizes that Army basic training is designed to take an input of shiftless youth and turn them into men with backbone. Maybe he wants to force America’s shiftless youth to improve themselves.
