I refer, of course, to Rod Blagojevich:
Brushing aside charges that he tried to sell Illinois’ vacant U.S. Senate seat, Gov. Rod Blagojevich appointed former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris to the post today in defiance of Senate leaders who said they would not admit anyone he selected.
It was an abrupt about-face for Blagojevich, who had said after his Dec. 9 corruption arrest that he favored a special election to find a successor to President-elect Barack Obama. But Blagojevich said he acted after the Democratic-controlled General Assembly declined to approve legislation for a special election.
“Please don’t allow the allegations against me to taint this good and honest man,” Blagojevich said while introducing Burris at a downtown news conference.
President-elect Barack Obama said in a statement:
“Roland Burris is a good man and a fine public servant, but the Senate Democrats made it clear weeks ago that they cannot accept an appointment made by a governor who is accused of selling this very Senate seat. I agree with their decision, and it is extremely disappointing that Governor Blagojevich has chosen to ignore it. I believe the best resolution would be for the Governor to resign his office and allow a lawful and appropriate process of succession to take place. While Governor Blagojevich is entitled to his day in court, the people of Illinois are entitled to a functioning government and major decisions free of taint and controversy.”
Alas, it appears that the President-elect and his allies will not be let off the hook that easily. And for those who think that the Senate can just refuse to seat Burris simply because they don’t like Blagojevich . . . well . . . see this.
And pass the popcorn.

What is he on the hook for exactly?
Not so much Obama
Leopard1996 (Diary) Wednesday, December 31st at 7:54AM EST (link)But for the rest of the Democrat douchebags, they have a decision, either not seat Burris, and be shown as all corrupt pieces of garbage, or don’t seat him, and get cast as racist, and loose that 80 – 90 percent support of the African American bloc that they enjoyed. It does seem that Blagojevich just enacted the nuclear option of his own, and if he is going down, others are going down with him.

jdub19 Wednesday, December 31st at 7:57AM EST (link)the key in the statement by Pej is “allies”… there will be others going down.

Time will tell...
jdub19 Wednesday, December 31st at 10:47AM EST (link)I do have time….I love the wait.
Well over a year ago there were rumors in this state that Blago was going down, and it was his name on the sealed indictment. Pat Fitz took his time, built his case, and well…what do you have?
Who?…I’d settle for Emil Jones…but, I’m not picky. The light is on…they’re running for cover

Patricia_C (Diary) Wednesday, December 31st at 11:54AM EST (link)I really want to believe that Mr. Burris is (as the liar, Blagojavich puts it) “a good and honest man”, but that Mr. Burris (against several reports that he enthusiastically lobbied to previously deaf ears for this position) claims it was Blagojavich who surprised HIM with a phone call.
It is known that Mr. Burris (and his wife) donated $4,500.00 to Blagojavich and another $ $10,000 was donated from the former Attorney General’s consulting and lobbying shop, Burris & Lebed.
The most recent donation was made in June of this year as the governor was known to be knee-deep in charges of ethical misconduct.
Burris also attended high-end fundraisers on at least three separate occasions, Most recently, in July 2008, when Blagojevich hosted one of six events to raise money for his campaign fund (which had suffered because of mounting legal bills).
In April 2006, Burris himself hosted a 3,000 person event in the main hall of Chicago’s Field Museum.
In July of 2005, Burris attended Blagojevich’s annual political fund-raiser.
I’m sorry… but I am having a bit of trouble believing that Mr. Burris is being truthful about how his appointment came to pass and that it was obtained through upstanding and completely above-board means.
I understand that Mr. Burris has been (as Charles Krauthammer puts it) “reaching for the brass ring” (unsuccessfully) all his life. But to consider his appointment to the senate as a Gold Medal “accomplishment” is more remeniscent of Rosie Ruiz than Bruce Jenner.
In spite of his many attempts and losses to gain a higher political office, Mr. Burris (after the controvery broke) should have chosen to maintain his dignity than to stand grinning at the finish line expecting admiration for winning a race no one else would lower themselves to run.
He should have turned it down and not played in Blagojavich’s game of defiance. He should have insisted on a special election and given himself the opportunity to accomplish his life-long dream with honor.
And Bobby Rush… How sad that he chose to toss his hat into the ring of disgrace along with Blagojavich. How dare he insult the integrity of the American People by daring our elected members of congress to follow through on their warnings that they will (in an attempt to establish SOME semblace of integrity into the whole debacle) deny the appointment of ANYONE, chosen under such reprehensible circumstances, by inferring that such an action would be considered instead as an act of racisim.
To my surprise, it was Barack Obama (who had once supported Mr. Burris’ failed attempt to become Mayor) who defused this shameful attempt to disguise this as a matter of race. After the appointment of Burris, Mr. Obama issued this statement:
“Roland Burris is a good man and a fine public servant, but the Senate Democrats made it clear weeks ago that they cannot accept an appointment made by a governor who is accused of selling this very Senate seat. I agree with their decision, and it is extremely disappointing that Governor Blagojevich has chosen to ignore it. While Governor Blagojevich is entitled to his day in court, the people of Illinois are entitled to a functioning government and major decisions free of taint and controversy.”
“… without taint and controversy.”
At this point, is it even possible?

The Rosie Ruiz comment is appropriate
Jack_Savage (Diary) Wednesday, December 31st at 12:01PM EST (link)Democrats no longer think they even have to soil their hands with a campaign any more, and Rosie Ruiz describes Schlossberg – Kennedy and Burris, and so many others, to a T.
It makes me angry
Patricia_C (Diary) Wednesday, December 31st at 12:29PM EST (link)And, rather than skipping the effort of earninghis title by slipping in unseen, Burris has the arrogance to hail HIS cab in plain view of the entire country to stand there at the finish line grinning in defiance, daring us not to cheer his “victory”, telling us that if we do NOT give him the prize, we are doing so because he is black, not because he has disgraced himself and has insulted not only his own race, but the entire Nation and the principles upon which it was established.
“Even when you fall on your face, you’re still moving forward.”
He does it because he can
Jack_Savage (Diary) Wednesday, December 31st at 12:42PM EST (link)A black man is claiming he is due something simply because of his race because now is the best time in history to do so.
You need to look at it this way – identity politics has come home to roost in the Democrat party far, far sooner than I had ever hoped. It is going to be great watching this.
Off the subject, my great-grandfather and grandmother lived and were married in Halifax, VA, and many of my descendants are buried there. My company did work on the middle school renovation and the new elementary schools in South Boston. I hail from SW VA in the area around Smith Mountain Lake.

South Boston… I use to work at The World of Sports (about 20 years ago, when it first opened) and for another spell at The Halifax Athletic Club.
Smith Mountain Lake… Spent my two week summer vacations there for 5 years. Stayed at a place called The Moore Cottage in an area called The Isle of Pines… Seems I stirred up quite a ruccus one year, becoming known at The Honey Hole (good Lord what a name for a bait-n-tackle store) as The Babe in the Stipedy String Bikini… Heard tell it was the fishing spot of choice that year… even though no one was catchin’ nuthin’…
At lunch on many of the little islands… went to visit the Damn everyday…
Ya know the movie, “What About Bob?”, That was filmed on Smith Mountain Lake. (not at Lake Winnipisauki in Vermont, as they say in the film. Don’t know why they do that. Why not just say, Smith Mountain Lake?) I boated by the house every summer just to rest my hands on the end of the dock where Brian Murray stood with his life vest and water wings trying to get up the courage to dive with the kid. If you haven’t seen it… ask anyone… They’ll be happy to show it off to ya….
