Our Very Own Arnold Vinick

While Tim Geithner is a good pick for Treasury, I continue to be puzzled that Hillary Clinton is going to get the top job at the State Department. I said what I wanted to say on this matter so I won’t repeat myself, but it continues to stun me that we are viewing the position of Secretary of State as being something akin to Homecoming King/Queen, to be handed out to someone with starpower who, in representing us, can somehow make us seem to be the Cool Kids of the International Community and thus cause other nation-states to forget their interests in the course of liking us.

Relatedly, I think that Bob Woodward is completely accurate with his comments. Get ready to pop some popcorn for this show–assuming that you are able to keep it down, of course.

I had just assumed that Obama was making a conciliatory gesture to her and that she would see it as such. So after “serious consideration” of his offer, she would decline, and that would be the end of it. There are many reasons why neither party should want her there, but the weakest of the reasons in favor has to be that her “star power” will allow her to accomplish something meaningful. Does anyone seriously believe that her “celebrity” status will count for anything in dealing with the likes of Kim, Putin, Ahmedinejad et al?

and your enemies closer. Hillary in the Senate could be a problem. Shipping her off to Israel isnt such a big deal.

It removes Obama’s chief rival from any position to undermine him in 12. It’s a perfect political move.

She accepts, she’s politically neutralized.

She declines, she’s a disloyal poltical hack who will never get nominated, no matter how disastrous Obama’s administration might be seen 4 yrs hence.
