With George W. Bush in charge of the White House, what appeared to be overweening executive authority was condemned and decried.
With Barack Obama preparing to take charge . . . well, it’s a little bit different:
“There’s a lot that the president can do using his executive authority without waiting for congressional action,” [transitition director John] Podesta said on “Fox News Sunday” yesterday. As the team looks at agencies, it’s considering moves on “energy transformation, on improving health care, on stem-cell research,” he said.
He’s right, of course. The President can act via executive orders and Barack Obama would be well within his rights to do so. Of course, the current Administration is seeking to issue a number of executive orders as well before it heads out the door and that exercise is supposedly awful beyond belief. The double standards are plain.
Equally amusing is the assertion by one of Barack Obama’s transition coordinators that Obama will be “ready to rule” on Day One. I am sure that this was an unintended gaffe but if it was said by a Republican, heads would have exploded all across the mainstream media.

Not a double standard
Yil Tuesday, November 11th at 2:40AM EST (link)I’m not sure that this should be considered a double standard. An outgoing President in the last days of office plans to do things that he didn’t anytime prior in his 8 years in office isn’t a profile in courage… If he really wanted to allow mining next to the Grand Canyon why didn’t he just do it a few years ago? Or how about changing things he knows the next President would be against and will just reverse in 2 months?
I’d say a better double standard would be comparing Bush’s last actions to Clinton’s and coming up with a different answer. Pick a position and stick to it, but don’t waffle based on the party of the guy who is doing them. If Clinton’s last executive orders, that Bush undid, were petty or politically motivated then so are the current executive orders being written now.
It'll be amazing...

scottbomb (Diary) Tuesday, November 11th at 9:06AM EST (link)Or possible dictatorship? With the far left in charge of everything but the Supreme Court (which has no enforcement power), we shall see. I’m hoping and praying this particular congressman is wrong but to think that Americans are immune from being suckered like the Germans or Russians were just a century ago is a denial of human nature. A major crisis would be the perfect excuse for the president to declare a “suspension” of the constitution (which he isn’t terribly fond of).

EastCoastObserver Tuesday, November 11th at 11:51AM EST (link)Bush has used them around 70% of the time and Clinton used them around 17% of the time. Bush has wielded executive power more than any other President. So, I don’t know how much of a double standard it will be and I’m pretty sure every incoming President initially uses some executive orders to realign some of the past administration’s policies.
Unleash the Pardon Dogs

I suppose I should have said, I don’t like the idea of a strong executive branch, or strong federal government in general. I’m extremely wary of the government, and I’d like them to stay as far away from me as possible.
