The modern Republican Party has risen above its insecurities to achieve political success. Ronald Reagan, for example, held an unshakably positive vision of American capitalism. He didn’t feel a need to qualify the meaning of his conservatism. He understood that big government was cruel and uncaring of individual aspirations. Small government conservatism was, by definition, compassionate — offering every American a way up to self-determination and economic prosperity.
Republicans lost control of Congress in 2006 because voters no longer saw Republicans as the party of limited government. They have since rejected virtually every opportunity to recapture this identity. But their failure to do so must not be misconstrued as a rejection of principles of individual liberty by the American people. The evidence suggests we are still a nation of pocketbook conservatives most happy when government has enough respect to leave us alone and to mind its own business. The worrisome question is whether either political party understands this.
–Dick Armey. Actually, the only “worrisome question” is whether the Republican Party understands this. Democrats may or may not understand this but Democrats run as the party that believes big government ain’t so bad. To the extent that Republicans ape Democrats, Republicans lose. And “compassionate conservatism” has not been about pursuing conservatism. Rather, it has been about telling the public “we Republicans are not so bad because we are kinda sorta like the Democrats.”
In an electoral contest between fake Democrats and real ones, the real ones win. This year was no different.

Vinnster Saturday, November 8th at 6:47AM EST (link)Well stated.
For years I wondered how a person with a high IQ could be a Liberal, or an extremely successful person could be a Liberal.
The only logical conclusion I could come to was they really do not believe a common average person can be successful and pursue their dreams in America. They attributed their success to their superior IQ, or ironically a God given talent. We have often referred to them as Elitist that looked down on everyone as inferior humans incapable of matching their successes. I believe it is a mistake for conservatives to think of them as someone who thinks they are better than most people. I think the correct way to understand them is to think of them as someone who knows they have a high IQ or a special ability that makes them successful and they feel sorry for the common man for not being gifted with that edge, hence the foundation for their belief system, since the common man has no hope of prosperity on their on, the government and the prosperous should be required to make up the difference through all forms of assistance and handouts.
The other group of Liberals, the unsuccessful ones, I see as bitter people who think since they could not be successful, the deck is stacked against them by evil rich capitalist that keep them oppressed and plot to keep them poor.
The American Dream is real. Any person who wants to be prosperous and practices some very basic and simple rules, can be, regardless of IQ or lack of some great skill. That does not make it easy, but it can be done by the common man. Liberal do not believe this, but we know it to be fact because we see it in people around us everyday.
Take a Liberal successful small business owner and they will attribute their success to their great abilities others lack. Take a Conservative successful small business owner and they will attribute their success to following very simple basic rules of providing a product or service at a competitive price and working very hard at it over time. The Conservative knows their path to success can be taught to anyone, the Liberal believes since their success is based on their personal attributes,it can not be taught.
It is my belief our current Republican Leaders have fallen victim to the above Liberal mindset. That is why they appear to be the Democrat Lite Party instead of Reagan Republicans. I think Peggy Noonan is the perfect example. She is a Conservative Elitist who thinks her success is because of how wonderful she is. She demonstrated for the world to see in her perspective on Sarah Palin who embodies what real Conservatives believe.
I am an optimist, but it is my sincere belief our current batch of Republican Leaders are nothing more that Conservative Elitists who do not believe the common man can be successful if government gets out of his way. They play lip-service to it simply to garner votes from our side.
So true...
GATransplant (Diary) Saturday, November 8th at 6:53AM EST (link)I agree with a lot of your comment – the liberals that I know seem to be very big believers in some sort of secular concept of predestination. Either they are successful through their superior intellect or they are not due to the system being against them. And they believe that for everyone else, too.
After studying psychology and neuroscience some, I came to believe (and still do believe) in the capabilities of the human mind, no matter what some test says your “IQ” is.

GATransplant (Diary) Saturday, November 8th at 6:58AM EST (link)Pejman, an insightful post as always, and I agree that Republicans could go a long way toward rehabilitation and recovery if they recognize this and adjust accordingly.
But I also think that there are just too many people in this country, particularly in the in under-30 crowd, who think government should be active and intricately involved in every single problem.
Maybe the GOP should do this, maybe another organization, but someone needs to put together a coordinated effort on the ideological side of things, so that when the GOP does come around to its roots, there is an electorate that will overwhelmingly respond positively. Not in the 55-45 majority area, but in the 70-30 landslide area.

Vinnster Saturday, November 8th at 9:02AM EST (link)This is very true. Unfortunately the Liberal education system has virtually eliminated educating people to be self reliant. The American Dream is teachable and transferable. It is an attitude coupled with a strong work ethic.
Ask any person over 70 what was the most life-shaping experience of their lives and they will tell you the Great Depression. I believe the bailouts were a catastrophic mistake, because it prevented us from relearning what those that experienced the Great Depression lived. Our education system never passed on the over 70 group great wisdom.
The bailout was just a temporary Band-Aid. Our current economic setup will fail. We can not fund what in on the books now. And our current Republican Leaders have no problem adding more to the national debt.
What should have happened is to let ALL the financial institutions fail that did not manage themselves properly. Would it have produced another Great Depression, most likely, but it would have forced what we did not teach our under 50 folks what being fiscally responsible nation requires.
If given the option of another Great Depression with me losing everything I own that would force fiscal responsibility on our spoiled rotten populous or continue down the road only to have total failure of our economic system anyway because of an ever expanding government spending and the freedoms we are going to lose, I vote for the another Great Depression.
Sad, but true...
Liz Saturday, November 8th at 9:22AM EST (link)Those mad libs are correct. Frankly, I say the Party and ALL of it’s branches MUST come together and unify under this threat. We have done it before, and we can do it again. My Nana always taught my brother and I to follow the 11th Commandment when it comes to these things, and I fully intend on honoring it. However, I fear the infighting is going to get nasty and President Reagan’s words will be ignored, and the liberals will take absolute delight in the battles that ensue. All in all, I totally agree with the quote from Mr. Armey. I joined the GOP for fiscal conservatism and smaller government, and we must return to the roots of the Party (limited government!) to save it, while bringing together everyone.
This is no time for purging- and I say this knowing there are many in the Party I disagree with. We’re Republicans- we will come together, act with class and dignity, and make one heckuva comeback come 2010.

I agree with Armey that McCain did not argue convincingly that his health plan and tax cuts would work well.

Mark Steyn has written
ColoKid Saturday, November 8th at 10:51AM EST (link)this rather atypical gloomy article
wherein he notes that by 2012 over half the country will be non-taxpayers. He questions whether center-right is really a correct description on the American electorate anymore, or if it is, how much longer that description will continue to be accurate.
Republicans have a tough task. On the one hand, they alienate their own base, and promote eventual economic disaster, with “moderate” or “compassionate conservative” policies regarding government size and spending. But with more and more people feeding at the public trough, how can they continue to be elected by promising smaller government and less government spending when so much of the electorate has a vested interest in the opposite?
The answer has to lie in more creative solutions to problems which may, at least in the short run, involve more government involvement in the economy but which in the longer term would allow non-governmental solutions to take hold. I know that’s a paradox, and no, I don’t know what those solutions might be. I wish I did. But part of the answer has to be finding and grooming creative Republican politicians who can clearly and eloquently state the conservative case — in other words, the antithesis of GWB and McCain.
Risk
Fotones_de_Akba Saturday, November 8th at 10:54AM EST (link)Vinnster, that’s a very interesting comment. But I don’t think it’s just the Liberal education system; our economy/ society is no longer that of small-town early 20th C. USA.

Which risks do we want to take as a society? Which risks are too dangerous?

Jack_Savage (Diary) Saturday, November 8th at 11:06AM EST (link)The big fear that I have is that GWB and Obama have provided the tipping point where normal people begin to think they are saps if they don’t belly up to government’s table.

Rep. Armey has a good point
Aetius728 Saturday, November 8th at 11:19AM EST (link)But we need to stop thinking like us. The typical American voter does not ponder such things, even during an election. This is not an insult, I do not mean to imply that they are not capable, it is a statement of fact-most Americans are to busy with work and family and other interests.
Yes, the conservative positions of small government, individual freedom, low taxes, free markets, etc. need to be emphasized. But they also need to be explained. People want to know how policies will affect them.
For example, McCain’s healthcare plan was described(when he even took the time to mention it) as “free market.” Here comes Obama and totally distorts the plan, with absolutely no opposition.
Yes, the plan was “free market,” and yes, people need to hear that term, most people still think that is a positive thing, but what they also needed to hear from Senator McCain was something like “under my plan, every insurance company in the nation will compete for your business.”
I will scream it again-populism and demaguagery are why we have faced such losses.
If you think spouting “conservative ideas” is going to be enough to win, you are sadly mistaken. They need to be expressed, and explained.
Another example, cutting the corporate income tax. McCain got slammed in commercials for wanting to give more tax breaks to corporations. He did manage to sneak in the point that our tax rate is very high compared to other industrialized nations, but most of the attacks worked, at least where I live. He was defined as someone who wanted to give breaks to companies, and not the “little guy.”
How do we counter this? The only way is to point out to people that when the tax rate is cut, incomes will rise, prices may decline, etc. But we need to anticipate the liberal counter argument, which will be that those evil corporations will simply keep the extra money. At that point, a candidate like McCain or Bush would stop and move on to a different topic, handing the liberal the win, instead of replying that labor is a market, companies compete for workers and customer, and then lambasting the opponent for shameless demaguagery or a dangerous lack of economic knowledge.
The republican base is mad at republicans for abandoning their principles. The American people are angry because they believe that republicans gave large tax breaks to the rich(the purpose of which hasn’t been adequately explained)let oil companies make obscene profits at their expense, haven’t fixed skyrocketing insurance costs, give tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas, created the financial mess by deregulating Wall Street, etc.
Until that is realized, and we find another great communicator who has the intelligence, rhetorical ability, and the stones to destroy liberal arguments and effectively explain conservative ones, we will have a difficult time winning.
Go to a little league baseball game or a blue collar bar after work. Ask some random people whether they would rather vote for you if you were a candidate that encouraged small government and free market healthcare reforms, or if you were a candidate who would punish companies that sent American jobs overseas and imposed price controls on gasoline.
Why can't we cut the government trough?
mom2oneson (Diary) Saturday, November 8th at 11:19AM EST (link)We created this mess of people wanting more from Uncle Sam by giving it out in the first place. mom2oneson (Diary) Saturday, November 8th at 11:49AM EST (link)You are 100% right. They need to be explained. This is my third time posting this but McCain did not sell what it would be like under him to the people. He is like a salesman who never got to the point where people are imagining having that product/president in their life. Obama is a better salesman.
I have a better idea
Aetius728 Saturday, November 8th at 11:59AM EST (link)Why don’t you write a diary, and then take the argument outside of our little conservative online grassroots bubble community by writing an editorial in a local newspaper, or calling a local talk radio show(and not one whose listeners probably already agree) and make your case there.
I am not implying that mom2oneson specifically should do this, I would not presume to make such a suggestion without knowing whether there are other factors in your life that might make doing so difficult, such as time limitations for example.
I am trying to make the point that we need to start making our cases to a larger audience. Instead of just whining because our politicians are incapable, lets take it upon ourselves.
You are right about that too.
mom2oneson (Diary) Saturday, November 8th at 12:03PM EST (link)They never come back with the real answer. Rich Chatfield (Diary) Saturday, November 8th at 12:12PM EST (link)This sounds way to much like, let’s all just get along.
It sounds too much like, moderates are not to blame and thereby abject their responsibility for leading the party into the ditch by trying to placate America as pseudo libs.

If the Moderates want to all join hands and sing the elitist humanistic version of kum-by-ah, then they are welcome to do so. I am not buying into it. The only thing I want to hear from moderates right now is, I am sorry, we thought we knew the right way to win but obviously we were wrong.
Anything short of that clear acknowledgement is in my opinion only a continuance of the moderate rhetoric that has marginalized and gutted the republican party.

Here's a simple minded argument -
persiflage Saturday, November 8th at 12:25PM EST (link)The above-mentioned departments consume on the order of several hundred billions of tax dollars in discretionary spending each year, and NONE of them lie within the limited constitutional authority of the Federal government. Aetius728 Saturday, November 8th at 1:19PM EST (link)Take the department of education. Aside from pointing out that it has no constitutional role, ask people if higher education has become more affordable.(It hasn’t, as we all know)
Point out that education continues to drop compared to other nations, no matter how much money we through at it.

I wish I could write to counter some of the plight of the poor liberal nonsense and point out the invisible groups that do need help and real ways any half mature individual could help them.
I have never hard a dem or repub leader that really seems to understand the different reasons for poverty, the different levels of poverty and how it all plays out in people day to day lives. If they don’t understand that how can they make broad policy decisions? They talk about the poor like it’s a foreign country/culture they have never been too and group everyone together.
The faith based initiatives are so popular with Bush but they are not “the answer” to problems like he makes them out to be.
The problem is the republicans believe myths too.
mom2oneson (Diary) Saturday, November 8th at 1:40PM EST (link)They believe it too. If someone writes about failing test scores and so forth the answer back will be, we need more money the reason they can’t read or add is because their parents are poor. The repubicans believe that line too unforunately and it’s total nonsense.
The truth is bad teaching methods=children who can’t read. It has nothing to do with how bright the kids are or their income levels. The schools should be closed, the teacher & admin fired and forced to find job like others where they earn their pay.
People including republicans think of the dept of ed/public schools are some kind of necessity that the population needs. Many politician’s bios have some sort of tie in with public schools with their spouse.
Cut USAID
kweiss01 Saturday, November 8th at 1:46PM EST (link)I work in the economic development industry and having witnessed the waste would recommend cutting USAID.
What has USAID really accomplished? We’ve been delivering aid to Africa, for example, for 40+ years. The poverty and petty conflicts continue to rage on. All we do is enable bad governments and create a donor/recipient culture. The reality is, development only comes from good local governance. We can throw all the money we want at special programs overseas; until countries have governments which care to provide strong legal and physical infrastructures, the endemic poverty will continue.
If I had my way, the only international aid we would give would be in the way of disaster relief. Unfortunately, I know that even if that were the criteria, the definition of “disaster” would eventually be broadened to include everything under the sun, and we’d be right back where we started.
How would they justify sending money to other countries?nt
