An Open Letter

Dear Senator:

Switch parties. Or at least, be an unhyphenated Independent and caucus with the Senate Republicans.

There is no reason to think that you will ever be treated with respect and dignity in the Democratic Caucus again. Even if you seek to make amends for what Senator Reid perceives to be your apostasy, you will always be viewed with suspicion and bitterness by members of the Democratic Caucus.

By contrast, Republicans will welcome you into the fold. You will help cut a Democratic majority and if your presence in the Republican Caucus helps the GOP recapture the majority in the Senate at some point down the line, you can have your chairmanship back. And if your seat makes the difference in that effort–and who knows? It might–your power will be especially and particularly enhanced.

So make the switch. Take the plunge. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Sen. Lieberman is already one of us - by default

NoKoolAidForMe (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 1:21AM EST (link)

Regardless of what he does next, everyone knows the Democrats are going to run against him when his term expires. The only way he gets elected is by getting Republicans to vote for him while taking a good slice of the Democratic vote. In other words, he’s dead to the Democrats. Sure, Reid will take his caucus vote, but he’ll get no respect from them.

You’re right, he might as well ride out the storm and by the time he is up for re-election, the Republicans will be making a play for majority status in the Senate. He’ll be well taken care of there.

Makes a lot of sense EXCEPT that Joe is domestically a straight up democrat in terms of policy positions

JSobieski (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 2:25AM EST (link)

Nice guy and all, but are we really looking for a Lincoln Chafee . . . although admittedly with character?

My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

STOP THE MADNESS!

A reduction in the rate of spending increases is NOT a cut!
In-state tuition for illegals is NOT amnesty!
Requiring someone to pay their medical bills is NOT an individual mandate!
Reducing tax rates is NOT a tax increase!

Agreed...

I think he is damaged goods.

His voting pretty much down the line for the dems isn’t going to change. If it did it would be seen as revenge and would really ostracize his constituents.

Sure we would take his support now but we need a back-up plan to get that seat and not just rely on Lieberman winning re-election because the netroot wacko’s are already looking to unseat him.

What's the Point?

I thought we wanted the RINOs out so we could see a return to a more conservative-focused Republican Party.

Other than adding an “official” R to the Senate, this does nothing to strengthen our minority.

We’re as likely (and justified) to turn our backs on McCain as Dems are to do the same to Lieberman.

I agree with you

Scope (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 7:52AM EST (link)

I would rather not see any more RINO’s. As was pointed out by Rush, all the moderate R’s lost re-election while the conservatives did pretty well. I do believe when McCain comes up for re-election in 2010 he is going to have a hard time. Hopefully by 2010, when Obama and his goons have broken every bad promise they made, the real Conservatives will be on the rise.

I suspect that because McCain wasn’t next, his anger will come back and he will help the D’s with things like Cap and Trade and the amnesty garbage.

It is so important that we all start our work on the come back of Regan Conservatism ASAP.

when I read the opening line of you letter: “…Switch parties.”, I thought you were referring to McCain. He has never been anything but a RINO and should have the fortitude to finally stand up with his fellow democrats. Without a hyphen or the “maverick” moniker attached.

Lieberman is no loser

Kevin Groenhagen (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 8:48AM EST (link)

CNN’s Carol Costello just deemed Joe Lieberman a “loser” in the wake of the election. I don’t agree with everything Lieberman stands for, but any person who puts his country above his party can’t be called a loser.

Costello also called the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth losers and said the “politics of personal destruction” did not work this year. First, the SBVT merely told the truth about John Kerry. In fact, their message was very similar to an op-ed piece that James Webb, now a Democratic U.S. senator, wrote in early 2004 for USA Today. Second, it is a fact that the Obama campaign ran more negative advertising than any other campaign in history.

You're welcome to him

Reaper0Bot0 (formerly Han_Pritcher) (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 9:26AM EST (link)

As far as I’m concerned. Tell ya what – give us Hagel and we’ll call it a day.

And please, no catty replies. At least Hagel had the class not to campaign for the other party’s nominee while a sitting Senator.

Maybe Lieberman wouldn't have done so if

janis (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 9:32AM EST (link)

your party had not been so gleeful about forcing him to run as an Independent just because of his support of the war in Iraq.

As for Hagel, where do you want him delivered?

Seriously?

NightTwister (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 9:41AM EST (link)

Hagel was campaigning for The Zero, just not out in the open. Don’t even try to push that on us.

Janis, let me make this clear

Reaper0Bot0 (formerly Han_Pritcher) (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 9:41AM EST (link)

If the people of his state’s party did not want to renominate him they did not obligated to do so. This is how democracies work.

And yes, Senator Lieberman was perfectly free to run as an independent. That is also how democracies work.

I do not regret the efforts (made by others, I did not participate) to knock him out in the primary. I’m all about heterodoxy, but if the voters don’t hold their representatives accountable for the positions they take they’ll never learn.

Yes, it turned out pretty terribly for my party but them’s the breaks. No Senator is owed their party’s nomination. None.

To kowalsi

NightTwister (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 10:00AM EST (link)

You guys primaried Lieberman and forced him to run as an Independent. Now your actions are coming home to roost. He didn’t leave your party, you kicked him out.

Typical lefty logic. Poke someone in the eye over and over and then expect them to just get in line like a good little doggie.

A caller to Rush suggested exactly that

peg_c (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 10:05AM EST (link)

that McCain should leave the Republican party and go either Independent or Dem. I totally agree, but his usefulness to them is as a maverick working against our side, not as a hawkish Democrat. But I don’t see Lieberman benefitting our side the way McCain benefits the Dems, mores the pity.

Government cannot be the solution when government is the problem.

If they didn't want to renominate him, then why

janis (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 10:08AM EST (link)

did the loser they DID nominate lose BIG?

Lieberman was run out town all but tarred and feathered by the likes of Jane Hamsher, the one who put up his picture in blackface. Your party does not tolerate dissent of any kind of its politicians.

For all that we on the right are characterized as close-minded and bigoted, you folks are the poster children for it. Hagel and McCain and many others in the R party have publicly held differing opinions from the administration, and yet they haven’t been treated as disgracefully as has Joe Lieberman.

And what NightTwister said below–Hagel all but wore an Obama tee-shirt in public for the man.

People like Lieberman are toxic

leftylurker (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 2:46PM EST (link)

I understand someone wanting to put principle before politics, and can respect Senator Lieberman’s actions to some degree.

That being said, you can’t keep discipline in your party by letting actions like his go unpunished.

I would want him out of the caucus even if he was the 60th vote. As you all know, temporary power is no consolation if you lose the soul of your movement.

Thanks for the head's-up, Faustus.

I am sad when I see people say I could care less if a RINO goes down because guess what in many cases what u may call a RINO is better then a Democrat

That Chafee seat is gone and never coming back

You write off many states if you expect and ardent conservative Republican to win and get elected it ain’t happening in New England or West Coast

The GOP needs to start being smarter by electing more moderates for state races too

Lieberman should step up NOW while he can make a difference

JLenardDetroit (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 3:34PM EST (link)

Joe should do the principled thing and join us NOW! I’m NOT suggesting he become a Republican, just that he caucus with us. This will return to a 50/50 for this the/an “interim” (transition) session of Congress! Let him work with us (gang of 14 style) to (at least, split) the remaining open appointments that President Bush HAS A RIGHT TO APPOINT to the Judicial Benches!

If Barack wants Republican respect, let him EARN IT! Let him step up, and actually/finally do the right thing. Make him stand up and be counted, no “Present button.” Make him choose to say that Judges should come to the Floor for UP/DOWN without delay and/or obstruction (if even for only a compromised number, half, the available seats. We would have to, in turn, offer no obstruction, or equal cooperation, for the other half – If they earn it!).

Needless to say, I will not hold my breath.

As for McCain, I agree that I’d like to see him change his Party affiliation to Independent. Several others I’d like to see frankly thrown out of the Party, the usual Senate suspects that do not vote as Republicans.

TrackerNeil Friday, November 7th at 5:03PM EST (link)

Hey, if Republicans want to take on a pro-choice, pro-gay-rights, Democratic-voting senator from a blue state, more power to them. I can’t see what the party offers Lieberman, however, except two years (at least) in the minority, and after that backbencher status. Maybe Lieberman is just itching to be the GOP’s crazy uncle, though. Hope springs eternal.

I think there’s something more here though.

I think treating people with dignity, character, honesty, and integrity are characteristics that the Republican Party is going to need to emphasize over the next two years if we want to earn our respect again with the people of America.

This would be a good place to start, imo. Lieberman worked hard for McCain, and I believe deserves our respect. He’s not particularly more liberal than Snowe or Collins, so I don’t see the issue with him caucusing with us. Personally, I think he should stay as an Independent though.
