This Is A Joke, Right?

Will Zeus be the Democratic nominee?

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s big speech on Thursday night will be delivered from an elaborate columned stage resembling a miniature Greek temple.

The stage, similar to structures used for rock concerts, has been set up at the 50-yard-line, the midpoint of Invesco Field, the stadium where the Denver Broncos’ National Football League team plays.

Some 80,000 supporters will see Obama appear from between plywood columns painted off-white, reminiscent of Washington’s Capitol building or even the White House, to accept the party’s nomination for president.

I presume that he will also have the power to toss thunderbolts at people who don’t applaud enthusiastically enough. Or perhaps this is a celebration of a latter-day Plato and his very own Republic.

Whatever. Theatrics may impress for a time. But they don’t hide the truth. And to the extent that theatrics evince pretentiousness, no one will miss the message or fail to recognize arrogance when they see it.

The joke may be on Obama...

The Greek Temple from which emerges the God-Messiah of Liberalism is not the only problem with this scenario. (Although I am wondering if IL&M/Hollywood special effects are going to be called on for those Thunderbolts.)

I note specifically in what you quoted:

reminiscent of Washington’s Capitol building or even the White House

I have a feeling that this may backfire in the televised presentation of his speech. I think the term hubris applies well here, both in the modern and ancient meanings of the term.

Of course, in modern terms it is used to mean overweening arrogance or pride–which Sen. Obama has in abundance–and which hopefully is coming before a fall. But in ancient times, it had a more specific and even legal meaning.

Quoting from Wikipedia:

In ancient Greece, hubris referred to actions which, intentionally or not, shamed and humiliated the victim, and frequently the perpetrator as well. It was most evident in the public and private actions of the powerful and rich. The word was also used to describe actions of those who challenged the gods or their laws, especially in Greek tragedy, resulting in the protagonist’s downfall.

In either case…I think that posing for his acceptance speech in front of a backdrop that many average voters are going to see as a faux White House might be seen as a bit premature for Candidate Obama.

I thought all those Jesus references

Change Jar Conservative (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 4:13AM EST (link)

were a bit of a stretch for the Democrats.

Besides, Jesus is God’s on and that’s too low of a position for “the One.”

Zeus … now that’s the equivilant.

If this looks like what I'm imagining....

…..then it will be another HUGE mistake for Mr. Obama. For him to appear as a roman emperor to the American public will be the latest in a continuing line of gaffes.

At least it's not

STONEHENGE.

“And where are they now?
The little people of Stonehenge
And what would they say to us?
If we were here… tonight.”

Sorry, Barack…after the Chinese Olympic spectacle, you’re Dollywood to Disney World. But hey, if that’s what you need…

“Lieutenant Dike wasn’t a bad leader because he made bad decisions. He was a bad leader because he made no decisions.”

What can you excpect from someone living in an echo chamber

Judy T (Diary) Wednesday, August 27th at 7:33AM EST (link)

What can you expect from someone living in an echo chamber that tells you you are the savior of the globe. Look at the reality of Barak Obama. What efforts has he actually ever put forth in life? Mom made the sacrifice of waking up hours early each morning to teach him English – okay so the kid either went without sleep or to bed early. How long did this last a couple of years? Then you have Grandma who made all the sacrifices for you to go to a prestigious school where by your own admission you were a lazy, casual student more intent of playing ball and smoking dope and taking other drugs. Your initial years in college weren’t much better. (Has he released his grades?) Then suddenly, even with the less than stellar high school grades and no extra curricular accomplishments, you are accepted into the Ivy League schools of Princeton and then Harvard.

What he says he worked his way through school because he held a job a summer or two. Hey Barak, some of us worked our way through school by working during the school year – 20 hours at an on-campus job in the library and then another 30 hours each weekend waiting tables. Others I know spent the summer roofing, pouring concrete, and other manual labor.

You are selected for Harvard Law Review, not on merit like most but are a popularity selection. Then you are picked as Editor again without any scholarly works to your name.

Yep, no wonder Barak thinks he is God – everything he has accomplished in this life has been virtually handed to him without any actual efforts (toil, sweat, hard work, and sacrifice) on his part.
At least Hillary and McCain have done the work.

No wonder you picked Biden. You had to pick someone who didn’t overshadow you in the accomplishments department.

You would

think, something a tad bit more subtle would be in order, considering the polling. But hey, let the Dems have their fun. The higher Obama is raised, the farther he has to fall, and harder, as the saying goes.

Should we start calling Obama an empty toga?

This is hilarious

This might even surpass the designing his own seal of the United States thing for being the most insanely arrogant and pompous thing Obama has done. I can’t even imagine what’s next.
