Wisconsin Pro-Life Groups Illegally Tracked

Following Field Marshal Janet Napolitano’s, the Department of Homeland Security has been tracking pro-life groups in Wisconsin as potential domestic terrorists.

From LifeNews via Melissa Clouthier at Right Wing News:

Madison, WI (LifeNews.com) — The Department of Homeland Security admitted today that it improperly conducted a threat assessment on pro-life and pro-abortion groups in Wisconsin. The assessment came before an expected rally last year in response to the University of Wisconsin Hospital board decided to allow abortions.

In February 2009, pro-life advocates planned to protest the hospital’s decision to open up a new Madison Surgery Center doing abortions.

The Associated Press reported today that the department said in a memo that it “destroyed all of the copies of the assessment after an internal review found it violated intelligence gathering guidelines about ‘protest groups which posed no threat to homeland security.’”

AP indicated the assessment was reportedly only shared with the director of Wisconsin’s intelligence-sharing center and local police in Middleton, Wisconsin, the site of the rally.

This is what should be even more frightening than the actual threat assessment: DHS, the Wisconsin Department of Justice and the Middleton Police Department all refused to comply with Freedom of Information Act requests from the Alliance Defense Fund and Pro-Life Wisconsin to review the findings. Turns out the reports from DHS were destroyed, and the Middleton PD refused to release its copy.

In January 2010 the Alliance Defense Fund, on behalf of Wisconsin pro-life advocates, asked the Middleton Police Department for a copy of the report pursuant to Wisconsin’s open records laws.

The Middleton Police Department refused to disclose the report and further said that the DOJ similarly refused to authorize disclosure of the report, despite the fact that DHS had already determined that the report was an improper investigation of freedom of speech activities.

Peggy Hammill, state director of Pro-Life Wisconsin, is justifiably outraged:

This move by DHS illustrates the Obama administration’s goal of silencing pro-lifers. It is disturbing that a local police department has apparently tapped into the security apparatus of the federal government to potentially obstruct free speech.

Last year, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano unjustly included pro-lifers in a report on domestic terrorism, and here we see her words in action.

To answer Dr. Clouthier’s question: Yes, it does look like an enemies list is being compiled by the administration. That list will eventuall consist of most of the American people, who the White House views as its enemy.

This is the danger of legislation such as the Patriot Act

While Republican administrations can, for the most part, handle responsibly the levers of power, Democrats cannot. Not now, not ever.

Despite their moonbattish assertions to the contrary, President Bush never pursued domestic anti-war groups to Napolitano’s degree, even as they were funded by outright enemies of the freedoms of this country.

Armed with the tools to pursue terrorists domestically and internationally, Republicans understand a solemn trust to go after the jihadists who have established a long and real-world history of blowing up themselves and others.

For Democrats, this “trust” means redefining the word terrorist to include “everyone who disagrees with us,” and excluding “those who are a true and present danger to the people who live in this country.” This has been the case since Woodrow Wilson defined terrorists as those who might have had a little problem with World War I, and continued through FDR’s “legal” internment camps.

The best answer? Don’t support the Republicans creating the large, sprawling foundation of bureacracy even with a well-intentioned mission to fight terrorism. If we must create surveillance operations, support clear boundaries with limited scope, and ensure there is no potential to redefine “terrorism” beyond true, honest threats — not political ones. Be specific, hire lawyers, carefully craft the language, and most of all, have the stones to be politically incorrect when doing so.

That way, the Left will be limited to define and pursue “terrorists” as their fevered and paranoid brains see. To continue, they’ll have to be up front and public with their intentions to go after those who disagree with them, instead of couching it in language such as “domestic terrorism.”

Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.
Thomas Jefferson

Arbitrary power is most easily established on the ruins of liberty abused to licentiousness.

No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.
James Madison

The means of defense against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home.

The truth is that all men having power ought to be mistrusted.

There is danger from all men. The only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty.
John Adams

The time is near at hand which must determine whether Americans are to be free men or slaves.

Three of your quotes are from James Madison

who went to war against the British, probably foolishly, in 1812.

So he would know whereof he spoke.

You know, I always wondered why history class in school mostly skipped over the war of 1812. Probably because troops from Canada kicked us in the jinglies and we only were able to fight the Brits to a draw elsewhere, except for New Orleans, after the war was declared over.

Exactly. Madison was against the central bank until he wanted it.

Then he rechartered it.
As there has been but one perfect man in history we have to accept that even imperfect men can arrive at near perfect truth. And then fail to live by it.

One of my quotes above;
The truth is that all men having power ought to be mistrusted.
James Madison
He didn’t say except for me.

I don’t recall who said it but someone once noted that all laws will be used in the worst way.

RICO for example against prolife protesters.

The answer is to be extremely reluctant to give power, it will be abused.

The powers of the Patriot Act that everyone was so adamant must be placed in Bush’s hands has not remained in Bush’s hands. We always knew it wouldn’t.
But is was also foolish to think Bush wouldn’t abuse power. TARP was an abuse of power. Medicare Drug Plan was an abuse of power. Shamnesty? McCain-Feingold was an abuse of power he acknowledged even as he signed it. He didn’t have any clear inclination to uphold the constitution he swore to uphold. Sure he may have been better that Obama but is that really a decent way to pick a president? We’re not as bad as the other guy?

I think Bush was trying to do the right thing but it doesn’t change the truth of what he actually did.

Why did he do it? One more quote;
Power always thinks it has a great soul and vast views beyond the comprehension of the weak.
John Adams

And yes the Alien and Sedition Acts were just such an example.

I just read about New Orleans and Andy Jackson. 2000 British casualties vs about 70 Americans. Amazing victory.
