I wrote a few days ago about being our obligation as citizens (and Christians) to participate in our democracy. Agree and work toward compromise when possible, but fight tooth and toe nail on areas which are just plain wrong – morally or other wise.
Going over the President-Elect’s website there was an interesting section on public service which should be brought to light.
The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start. (empahsis added)
Is this the civilian force which Obama was referring to and brought so much ire to those of us who paid attention? Why was this not dicussed during the campaign (that gets into a seperate discussion)?
It is one thing to offer incentives and encourage people to give back to their communities. We do this all the time with doctors, and in some cases teachers or even local organizations such as Ozarks Harvesting Hope.
This, however, is different. Mandating our children to perform the same job(s) which convicted criminals face for punishment is both wrong headed and goes against the very principles of our nation.
We are individuals who are free to choose, not shackled by the constraints forced upon us by government like that of the former Soviet Union or communist China.
It is for those very reasons I hope Republicans will fight this proposal and fillibuster such a notion into nonexistance.

This guy is a booksmart theoretical utopian moron.
Brokaw was right, we don’t know much about this guy.
Obama=Golfer in Chief, Leading from,
behind, the Back Nine.Leaders don’t create movements. Movements create leaders. Get involved. Your future depends on it.
Govt “invests” YOUR tax money for POLITICAL return rather than economic return.
Fight this imposition on education
Freedoms Truth (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 5:51PM EST (link)Folks, this is a GREAT reason to run for school board, to stop this nonsense.
School should be about learning. Not about indoctrination of children.
They can do community service via their churchs, and VOLUNTEER. The point is that it should be voluntary and not a Federal program.
Make this the slogan
THE COMMUNITY SERVICE DRAFT IS DAFT!

mom2oneson (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 6:21PM EST (link)I understand a true vocational school but that teaches a skill but here they send high schoolers here to answer phones or play hostess at local steak shops.

izoneguy (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 6:37PM EST (link)…what you need my kid?
You don’t want to go there.
My kids would tear you a new one.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
Our kids will be taking away union jobs.
Uma Richie (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 7:06PM EST (link)They’ll probably have to pay SEIU or AFSCME dues now.
By the way, while looking for information to compare this whole absurd plot to the liberal-opposed concept of workfare, I found an article about ACORN organizing workfare recipients after the GOP/Clinton welfare reform of 1996.
Here’s the link.

Will my kid get a secret ballot vote?
ReaganConservative3 Friday, November 7th at 7:34PM EST (link)I will be ready if some union thug comes to my door here in Texas to ask why my kid did not vote the way they want her to in obama’s new civilian army.
“What would Reagan do?”
Two Points
BamaID Friday, November 7th at 10:17PM EST (link)First, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution says
“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”
This certainly seems like involuntary servitude to me.
(Also note that the amendment says “their” jurisdiction and not “its” jurisdiction, but I digress.)
Second, imagine if conservatives argued that 6 year olds, because that’s what we’re talking about, should be allowed to work to support their families. We would be shouted down as barbaric. Yet Obama wants to mandate that these kids work for the good of the people and he will probably be celebrated for it. Hypocrisy anyone?
Grandma and Grandpa..
