For Our Campaign, Not Much Changes

The news that Arlen Specter has become a Democrat only makes official what has been true for many years. Senator Specter began his career as a Democrat, switched to the Republican Party out of electoral convenience, and is now switching back for the same reason. Throughout that time, his liberal voting record always indicated that he was more at home with the Democrats.

In recent weeks, Specter has made numerous statements about how important it is to deny Democrats the 60th seat in the US Senate, and how he categorically intended to remain a Republican to prevent one-party dominance in Washington. What Pennsylvanians have to ask themselves now is whether Specter is in fact devoted to any principle other than his own reelection.

For our campaign, not much changes. Instead of having Arlen Specter as an opponent in the Republican primary, we will face him in the general election, that is, assuming Pennsylvania Democrats decide they can trust him enough to give him their nomination. Whichever the case, our message remains the same. America is at a crossroads. In one direction lies massive Washington spending increases and more debt for our children, one after another taxpayer bailout of failed corporations, and the higher taxes that are inevitably required to pay for this unprecedented lurch to the left. In the other direction lies the traditional American principles of free enterprise, limited government, and personal responsibility. Those are the principles that our campaign will fight for, and those are the principles I will take with me, and keep with me, in the U.S. Senate. Please join our team at www.ToomeyforSenate.com.

I think you have an uphill battle with Arlen all but certain to be the Democrat nominee in what has become a blue state.

I think your campaign needs to kick off by pointing out to Pennsylvanians how Arlen went back on his word., he made that promise just a few weeks ago. You should be buying TV spots with that clip right now to frame this election.

Voters don’t like liars, regardless of their Party.

Can we stop acting like Democrats...

are unbeatable.

How Republicans lost is that they became indistinguishable by taxing, spending, abrogating our freedoms, running roughshod over our lives just like the Democrats used to.

Enough is enough.

Restoring the Constitution is not about bribing the American people with pork barrel spending and “bringing home the bacon” (like how I brought in current events?).

Let Americans make money and keep it. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of property.

Defend us and protect us and then stop right there.

Good luck with your campaign

I’m hoping that this recent turn of events causes Specter supporters to rethink their support for a man with no principles, and that you can replace him as a conservative voice in the Senate.

Maybe Operation Chaos worked on ejecting Specter, good riddance and good luck to you! nt

“What Pennsylvanians have to ask themselves now is whether Specter is in fact devoted to any principle other than his own reelection.”

I live in Illinois, but I think I know the answer to that one.

tgharris:

You are, in fact, uniquely qualified to answer this question. Like you, I live in Illinois, and we have considerable experience with politicians who utterly lack any principle other than his own election. The list would be quite long, and includes infamous opportunists from (alas) both parties: Blagojevich, George Ryan, Dick Durbin, Mark Kirk, etc. etc.

Good on ya', Mr. Toomey!

The odds are incredibly long. Everyone, and I do mean everyone is giving you up for dead, as if you’re the second coming of Santorum.

Piece of unsolicited advice. Fred Thompson got in a truck, drove across the state of Tennessee, and talked to the plain people of that state. He became a two-term Senator and a senior voice in our party because he understood that power, in the end, derives from the consent of the governed.

I dare you to do that. Go to the people. Take the message that worked for Reagan and make it yours. Despite what the news media say, we are still the same people.

You literally have nothing to lose except an election.

Keep it on the issues. It’s the only prayer you have.

Although I won’t handicap the race at this point, I will say (and believe you know) that conservatives with these campaign issues will be on the winning side more often than not in 2010:
Budget reform; balancing the budget and up/down earmark votes
Tax Reform; flat tax
Education Reform
Immigration Reform and Enforcement

Go get em.

You’ve got some other good candidates running, like Peg Luksik – and I hope that the party can find a way to utilize these resources constructively against what is going to be an uphill battle.

Any chance Peg can be tapped to run against Casey next time around – and in the meanwhile get help with increasing here name recognition?

I hope something changes, maybe not with your campaign internally, but I very deeply hope something changes in the Republican Party and that a lot of people do their utmost to support your victory. That would be change that I can believe in.

Best of luck to you, Mr. Toomey. Clear his clock.

A GOP message for Arlen: don't let the door hit you in the @$$ on the way out

streetwise (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 8:44PM EST (link)

If he can’t be bothered defending his record in a primary, he’s not qualified to be Senator. A perfect fit for the Dems, who fix their elections.

Go Toomey!

Somthing may have changed.

Samsara (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 9:09PM EST (link)

Specter switching parties may bring in Ridge.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/scorecard/0409/Ridge_for_Senate.html

If so, it will make for an interesting GOP primary. Whoever comes out on top will have to build a strong base in western PA. Rendell has tried to turn the whole state into a suburb of Philadelphia, and Specter pouring graft into “Fast Eddies” machine isn’t going to increase his popularity out here.

Now Let's Begin...

Freedomlover (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 10:17PM EST (link)

Specter has now admitted his true alliance, so it’s time to get the rest of the Rhinos to do the same. The Seblius voting confirmation is now on the record. The “Republicans” that voted yes are:

Lugar – Indiana
Brownback – Kansas
Collins – Maine
Snowe – Maine
Bond – Missouri
Gregg – New Hampshire
Voinovich – Ohio
Specter – Pennsylvania

I haven’t had time to do the proper research to see how many of these are up for re-election in 2010. If you’re from any of these states find out and vote accordingly.

As I said, Specter’s a start. If these Rhinos won’t admit who they are by changing parties, they need to be voted out as soon as possible!

Research Done...

Freedomlover (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 10:29PM EST (link)

Just checked. Five of the eight including Specter are up for re-election in 2010. Unfortunately, Collins and Snowe (the worst of them) are not up, same is true of Lugar from Indiana. But, here’s a list of those who are:

Brownback – Kansas
Bond – Missouri
Gregg – New Hampshire
Voinovich – Ohio
and, of course, Specter – Pennsylvania

Time to get out and find out who may be opposing the above and support them the best way you can.

According to this guy on Gretta, Brownback ain't running anymore

clement Tuesday, April 28th at 10:48PM EST (link)

So you can cross him off the list.

Voinovich is retiring also [nt]

clement Tuesday, April 28th at 10:51PM EST (link)

Okay,

Freedomlover (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 11:23PM EST (link)

Sorry for the hasty research, but that leaves 3 including Specter.

Sure am glad the other 2 left the country more in a mess before they start collecting their pensions from us. Nice guys, they got theirs, the blank with us. Don’t you just love Rhinos! Please be careful when deciding who to replace these guys with, make sure they’re for real.

I’m from Illinois and I’ve tried and tried to get Durbin out. No avail. I’m still gonna try, but you voters in these midterm states have a chance and a choice. PLEASE, PLEASE, work hard for the candidates that are not in the race just for self interests. We need to fight for our freedoms and stop socialism.

Add Bond to that list also (retiring) - nt

…Specter IS 79 years old. If he does win the PA Governor will get to name his replacement. Is there a requirement that he be replaced with another Dem? If not winning the Governorship may be important.

Principles are what really matter, Sir.

Please don’t follow McCain’s footsteps: afraid to call a Spade a Spade. That’s cowardice and ambiguity.

You are in a Minority Party. You need to build the case against the Majority.

In doing so, you need to find a VOICE that makes a startling contrast against the Majority: the Democratic Party.

By doing that, win or lose, you can already be sure that you’re making a history of your own in your state: You will join the halls of our great forefathers, the True American Patriots.

Good luck and May God Bless You, Pat Toomey.
