Calling all Virginians

Time to begin the work to recapture our state

Like so many people, I have been sorely disappointed by the election results, and I am deeply concerned over where Obama is going to take this country. Yet, I believe that Virginia is salvageable, and if we, the Virginia members of the RedState community can step up, we can be a key part in that effort. That is my hope, my silver lining, my commitment.

What I would like to do first, is for us to generate a conversation about ideas on how we can win this state back. Its a long hard road, and there is some momentum against us, but we are not so far behind here.

One idea I have is to mimic what the Democrats did in Iowa, that is, to start collecting a database of information of what issues matter most to voters, county by county, precinct by precinct, house by house. Figuring out: 1) What issues individuals are most likely to vote on; 2) What issues they tend to agree/disagree with us on; and 3) A rough sketch of voting history, would help organize grassroots efforts and magnify their effectiveness.

What other ideas do other folks from Virginia have? Would anyone be interested in forming a “subcommunity” within RedState to focus on Virginia?

Two problems I see in VA

VA_mom (Diary) Thursday, November 6th at 8:23PM EST (link)

I think the key is NOVA. McCain was fine in VA until they started counting Fairfax, Loudoun, Alexandria, Arlington, and Prince William Counties. There he got clobbered. I’m not sure yet what to do about it, but our efforst should focus on reclaiming those areas.

The other problem here is Warner, who won by a landslide against Gilmore. That is exactly how Obama got where he is today. The Republicans put up Alan Keyes, a decent man but not a strong, electable candidate, to run against Obama for his Senate seat. Across our state, most of the Congressman (as well as our current governor) are Democrats. Republicans need to get serious about taking these politicians down and reclaiming our state on a local level.

Sick of the Obama propaganda in Reston and Northern Virginia. Count me in.

Paint it Red is correct. We can recapture this once good state, Obama had a lot going for him in this election: fawning media, low Bush approval ratings, faltering economy, desire for change, better fundraising, more spending, better organized, opposition party base demoralized, generic ballot advantage, opposition candidate running mediocre campaign, etc. Despite all of those major advantages, he managed to squeak out a meager 52% here in VA, Imagine how well he’ll do when the taxes go up, Defense contractor jobs shrink due to DoD cuts, etc. with 52% as the starting point, Obama doesn’t have much margin for error. It’s a loooong way off, but I don’t see him winning 2012 here.

Here are some positives coming our way

•2009 Gov election. The last 4 Gov races were won by the party not in the White House. Part of this is a buyer’s remorse/ send message. We’re certain to see that with Obama.

•Unity. We have a party united behind a Gov candidate AG Bob McDonnell. He and LT Gov Bolling have an agreement not to run against each other. Dems are not united. The race is between State Sen Brian Moron (oops I meant Moran) and Creigh Deeds.

•Experience. McDonnell is seasoned campaigner- no macaca moments.

•Image. Current Dems that won, ran as moderates: Mark Warner was allegedly pro-business and Webb, as we are constantly reminded, served under Webb. Liberal Moran from liberal Alexandria can’t make the moderate claim. And unlike Kaine, Moran is not from an area other than Northern VA.

•Regional. McDonnell is from Hampton Roads area so that will cut into the Obama votes there. Moran is from NoVa. That does not help him in other parts of the state and it gains him little in NoVa since he would win that area anyway.

•Dem bench is running low. Who else do they have to run for future elections? Retread Leslie Byrne? She’s run for everything under the sun and lost almost all? Kaine has nowhere to go now. He can’t run for either Senate seat or Gov this time around. He’s private citizen next year. His undistinguished record means he’ll soon be forgotten.

•Dem lead in state Senate is only 1 seat.

•Dems don’t control the House of Delegates

•Obama Vacancies. Webb is fluke. We can beat him in 2012 with someone good. Maybe Obama will tap either Kaine or Webb for something, thus hastening the recapture of those seats.

Very Concerned

dld1717 (Diary) Thursday, November 6th at 11:24PM EST (link)

First the VA GOP has now lost 3 big statewide races in a row and has no Senate Seats and I fear will lose another Governor Race up next

What very much concerns me is that we also lost 3 Congressional Seats in the Commonwealth

We lost Open Davis Seat

Thelma Drake went down (poor thing) when she survived last cycle (in slightly Republican district which must be trending against us)

Virgil Goode looks like he went down by less then 100 votes as well

VA has had an influx of new residents many of which are highly educated, gov’t workers, and socially liberal the VA GOP would be smart to find a new way to appeal to these type of folks

Like in many states, Conservative movements must conquer the cities.

And Rural America must expand in terms of population.

We must offer something “new” with “high demands” for the people in the city streets.
