UPDATE: Buck will not withdraw.
Hey all I wanted to reassure everyone that it’s full steam ahead for my campaign for the U.S. Senate. While other candidates may still jump in the Senate race, one thing is clear – our party’s nominee will be chosen by Colorado’s grassroots Republicans, not by political operatives in Washington D.C. See you guys at the next GOP function!
UPDATE: Dick Wadhams, CO State GOP Chairman
COLORADO’S U.S. SENATE RACE AND THE NRSC
You have heard me speak and write many times how strongly I believe in a competitive, open and fair process for the Republican nomination for any office from county commissioner to governor. We have several outstanding candidates for U.S. Senate who will ultimately be strengthened by rigorous debate and competition in our nomination process.
There has been a lot of discussion in the past few days alleging that the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is endorsing a specific candidate. I can absolutely state that the NRSC will not endorse in our Colorado Republican nomination process for the U.S. Senate.
The NRSC is critical to our ability to win this 2010 Senate race and I have tremendous confidence in the NRSC Chairman, U.S. Senator John Cornyn of Texas, and his professional staff. We will be working closely with the NRSC over the coming months so that our eventual nominee will be in the strongest position possible to win in November 2010.
On a side note, I hope you saw Saturday’s news reports that former House Speaker Andrew Romanoff is going to run against the appointed, accidental senator, Michael Bennet, for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.

Much has been made about the recent surge of grassroots activism. Tea Parties, organizations such as the American Liberty Alliance, Rebuild The Party, and others, and online activist websites such as RedState.com, The Minority Report, and The Peoples Press Collective have either come into existence or had a significant increase in membership and participation. Ordinary people are taking time out from work and family to speak their minds concerning the growing trend towards government control of more and more areas of their lives.
This grassroots activism has come under attack from several different groups, including the current White House Administration, Congress, Union organizations and others, but no more so by an organization that should be on their side. I refer, of course, to the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Having not learned their lesson in previous years by supporting incumbent Primary candidates (e.g. Specter, Chaffee), they moved into a completely new realm of arrogance by endorsing Charlie Crist in Florida in an open Primary in Florida.
The backlash they received from that action made them a little more cautious in New Hampshire, but it’s still clear they are backing former Attorney General Kelly Ayotte in their open Primary. The arrogance of the NRSC is surpassed only by their hypocrisy. In their response to calls for the Massachusetts Legislature to once again changing the law regarding the replacement of a U.S. Senator, they have this to say,
The NRSC believes this should ultimately be up to the people of Massachusetts to decide,…
The fact that they do not even recognize this hypocrisy shows how out-of-touch they really are with the average conservative voter. This brings us to a situation brewing in Colorado. There are three candidates currently running in the Republican open Primary: Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck, Aurora City Councilman Ryan Frazier, and Colorado businessman Cleve Tidwell. There were rumors that former U.S. Congressman Bob Beauprez would also be running for this seat, but he recently announced he would not be running. We now find out that this is due to the fact that the NRSC is planning to announce its endorsement for former Lieutenant Governor Jane Norton.
Ben Degrow at Mount Virtus, and Michael Sandoval (a.k.a. El Presidente) at the Peoples Press Collective first broke the story about the possibility of Norton running with the NRSC’s backing. The Complete Colorado finds out that the NRSC has in fact registered internet domains for Jane Norton’s Senate run. Whether an outright endorsement of Norton such as they did for Crist in Florida, or covert backing such as Ayotte in New Hampshire, the NRSC is involving themselves where they don’t belong and aren’t wanted.
If there’s anything that the current group of grassroots activists are opposed to, it’s unwanted involvement in their lives from Washington. Make no mistake, the NRSC is all about consolidating power in Washington. This is the same group of leaders that overspent between 2000 and 2006, turning the GOP into a four-letter word in not only liberal, but many conservative circles. These same people now want to tell us who should represent us in Colorado: a former Lieutenant Governor who supported the largest tax increase in our State’s history. Fortunately, our Colorado GOP Party Leadership gets it. Scott Starin, Chairman Boulder County Republicans had this to say,
I had a long conversation with Chairman Wadhams today and he assured me that he conveyed our sentiment to the NRSC to stay out of the process until after the primary. Chairman Wadhams stated that there is a backlash arising and the NRSC is doing more harm than good for former Lt. Governor Norton.
Ultimately, the NRSC’s endorsement of a Primary candidate will likely discourage and alienate a significant portion of the grassroots opposition to government intrusion. Ben Degrow says it best,
Republicans in Colorado — including ones like myself, both sensible and principled — generally are tired of the candidate coronation process that has triggered a string of high-profile electoral defeats. Think Pete Coors 2004 and Bob Beauprez 2006, both fine men but both badly squandered chances. In each case the process that led to their selection generated a great deal of ill will that many of us are still working to overcome. [bolding mine]
The time for the NRSC to become involved in this race is after Colorado has selected its primary candidate, not before. If they do get involved, which it now seems highly likely they will, the NRSC should prepare themselves for another 6 years of minority and insignificance, because Michael Bennet will likely be re-elected.
For Colorado activists that would like to get involved, you’ll find a Facebook group and online petition available at this blog at the Peoples Press Collective.

proudgop (Diary) Sunday, August 30th at 5:34PM EST (link)I am glad the NRSC is endorsing candidates who can WIN just like NDSC has done in past cycles. They did so in Oregon last year if you recall when they endorsed the more moderate ( so called) over more liberal so the Republicans must be doing this.
All this talk of the NRSC taking a hit? Ummm.. they have been raising a lot more cash then the NRCC
I like Norton I won’t hide that. The other announced candidates have been terrible fundraisers and who goes from city councilman to US Senator??
There's no evidence Norton can win.
NightTwister (Diary) Sunday, August 30th at 5:41PM EST (link)There’s no evidence she can raise money either. She has in fact never run for public office.
In any case, if Norton is so electable as you say, why should the NRSC need to get involved at this point? She should win in a walk, right? The fact that she needs their help speaks volumes. No candidate that supports (or has supported) tax increases will have a chance with the grassroots voters here. She knows it, and the NRSC knows it too. One candidate has already dropped out due to the rumors and there’s rumblings that another candidate may drop out as well.
I can guarantee you the backlash will be heard all the way back to Washington if the NRSC endorses Norton. There will be activists showing up at her campaign events protesting against her. There will be online activists shouting her down. It will be a bloodbath for the GOP in Colorado.
I’m here, in Colorado. Trust me when I say I know about these things.

Let me clarify this for you. Even if the NRSC-backed candidates win, they get to the Senate and turn out to be squishes.
This is a consequence of direct election of Senators that the Dems have been faster to grasp than the Repubs. It means we don’t want to run elder statesmen types anymore – we need to run pit bulls – because the Dems are.

I know not everyone won’t be happy heard same thing over Kirk in IL but he is only chance to win their so NRSC is being smart on backing winners. Its about time and this is coming from someone who gives a lot money to NRCC and NRSC; thrilled they finally learned

You aren't going to change it by running fiscal liberals.
NightTwister (Diary) Sunday, August 30th at 6:29PM EST (link)Why don’t you respond to these questions?
1. Norton has never run for public office. There’s no indication that Owens will back her either with influence or money. What makes a candidate that has never run for public office more acceptable than one that has, even if that office is small (e.g. Buck as Weld County D.A. and Frazier as Aurora At-Large City Councilman)?
2. Norton supported the largest tax increase (Referendum C) in the history of Colorado. What makes you think Republicans, libertarians, and conservative independents are willing to elect another big spender to Washington in the current political climate?
The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter. – Winston Churchill
You make good points
proudgop (Diary) Sunday, August 30th at 6:42PM EST (link)I could be terribly wrong on Norton. I think she comes off very well on tv, her time working in Denver Police thing is plus, and she is known statewide. I also think the fact she is female will help us ( thats been debated before too).
Owens supported that C too so I guess if he ran just as much anger would be here??
I am just worried about Bennett already having 2.5 COH and the fact is the NRSC is not going to have a lot money to spend here and the other candidates just have not been that impressive. Money talks as they say and CO is not a cheap state to run in.
Why did Musgrove lose so badly then last cycle? Was she not conservative enough?
I still wish Owens would run, Coffman, or Suthers ran for this instead or re-election for AG.
Norton isn't all that well known.
NightTwister (Diary) Sunday, August 30th at 6:52PM EST (link)I hadn’t heard of her before, but I’ve only been seriously involved in CO politics for a couple of years.
As for Owens and Ref. C, he has a lot of popularity that could overcome it, especially if he was clear that he wouldn’t support future tax increases. For Norton, that’ll be much harder to overcome. Quite frankly I don’t see that she brings anything new to the race that isn’t already there, and she brings negatives that aren’t there right now. All 3 current candidates are strong fiscal conservatives.
Musgrave lost because she turned “moderate” in some areas after her last re-election and basically pissed off both sides of the aisle. I can’t tell you how many Republicans that I called during the election that stated they were voting for McCain and Schaffer, but would not vote again for Musgrave. Musgrave also made the same mistake others in CO have, which is to ignore the online media. We actually do have quite a bit of influence here among the voters, and that continues to grow daily.
As for Frazier not having that much cash yet, it’s only been 2 months, not the five that you claim. The previous three months he had an exploratory committee and wasn’t yet raising funds. I think once one candidate rises to the top there will be more money. A lot of people are holding back right now to see who stands out. Also, the race started much earlier this time, which means there’s still plenty of time to raise the necessary funds.

NightTwister (Diary) Sunday, August 30th at 7:07PM EST (link)You’re right about Colorado. Independent and Strong American Values are both very descriptive. Most people here just want to be left alone, but there’s strong support and pressure from the outside to turn us into another California. Right now, the leave me alone spirit is strong.
The Tea Party in Fort Collins (where I live) had a larger showing than many cities with a much larger population. We have good candidates for CO-4 and the Senate as well as Governor, which I believe can get us back some ground we’ve lost. Outside influence, especially backing candidates that don’t have strong fiscal bonafides will turn off many voters and if that happens we’ll likely see a continuation of 2006 and 2008.

why should they not endorse?
proudgop (Diary) Sunday, August 30th at 7:14PM EST (link)why should they not follow the Democrats lead when its been so successful for them?
Because we don't want Washington telling us who to elect.
NightTwister (Diary) Sunday, August 30th at 7:18PM EST (link)As for what’s working for the Democrats, we’ll see. I think you’re giving too much credit to the national organization, and not enough credit to an general distaste for all things Repulbican in the last election. The one before that the same thing was true, but mostly because Republicans spent like Democrats, so a lot of conservatives stayed home. If the national organization tries to tell us who should represent us, that will happen here again. You can already see the backlash in Florida and somewhat in New Hampshire, and certainly in Kentucky.
If it weren’t true in Colorado, you wouldn’t have County Republican Chairmen calling the State Party Chairman telling them in no uncertain terms they do not want the NRSC involved here. They’re saying this because that’s what the registered Republican voters are saying. They ignore those voters at their own peril.
The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter. – Winston Churchill
NRSC
proudgop (Diary) Sunday, August 30th at 7:29PM EST (link)all those nods do is help garner cash for their respective candidates and try to drive others out. ( which avoids bitter primaries while Dem sits back, smiles, and stockpiles cash).
It does not force anyone to run or not run or force voters too be forced to vote for particular candidate in voting booth
In essence isn’t MN, CT and a lot other states not even have an equal process when in essence they chose their perspective nominees through these state conventions? Do you have problem with these too?
Why don't you understand we don't want an anointed candidate?
NightTwister (Diary) Sunday, August 30th at 7:37PM EST (link)Maybe you do, that’s fine. But I can tell you that in this election cycle the anointed candidate will be shunned. It will not avoid a primary fight in this case, it will only exacerbate it.
Although it’s true that the likely reason Bob Beauprez isn’t running is because of the rumored NRSC endorsement of Norton, Ryan Frazier has clearly stated he’s in this to win regardless of what else happens with the others. There were also rumors of Ken Buck withdrawing, but now we’re hearing that so many people have called his campaign asking him to stay in that he’s reconsidering. That is a good thing.
You’re only looking at potential positives and not weighing the potential negatives from the NRSC strategy. In this State, in this particular election, I absolutely believe it will backfire. So much so, that if it happens, Norton can expect protesters at her campaign events. It’ll get extremely ugly, and all but ensure an election for the Democrat candidate.

AceInTX (Diary) Wednesday, September 2nd at 12:21PM EST (link)To elaborate
AceInTX (Diary) Wednesday, September 2nd at 12:19PM EST (link)Texans need to choose who is best to “REPRESENT” Texas, as should Coloradans. We don’t exist to give the NRSC the representation THEY would like to have in Washington…
The NRSC…the NRSC…the RNC…and so on should be in the business of helping those Texans, Coloradans, Floridians, etc who are nominated by their respective states and constituents win in the General elections…and anything they do to influence…or otherwise tell us what candidates they find acceptable is illegitimate and should result in a mouth full of spit in their faces!
This is simple
acat (Diary) Wednesday, September 2nd at 11:22AM EST (link)The role of the NRSC breaks down to 2 activities:
Find and support candidates to challenge incumbent Dems where there are currently no candidates.
Support incumbent Repubs who are being challenged by Dems
Unfortunately, the NRSC keeps screwing up these simple roles, inserting primary challengers to perfectly good candidates, and supporting squishy incumbents in the primaries, where legitimately conservative challengers should be given their shot.
They’re worse than useless, they’re interfering with the legitimate role of the primary process.

Because Republicans don't think like Democrats.
The_Gadfly (Diary) Wednesday, September 2nd at 7:44AM EST (link)If you want people to come out and vote for you, you have to demonstrate that you use the same reasoning they would in the same situation. Democrats look for messiah type leaders to tell them what to do. Republicans look for self starters who naturally gravitate toward the same decision they would make. Using the messiah model doesn’t motivate self starters.
And in this case, it is actually critically important to WIN Colorado, because Colorado didn’t turn purple, it was organized purple. The Dem supporters, especially Soros the Imported Communist, setup a multitude of not-for-profit groups to shill for their point of view. With the RNC and NRSC running Dem-lite candidates pretty much everywhere in the country, Dems pretty much won in a landslide. If we want to turn this around, Colorado is the place to start. And that means that the only role the NRSC should play in the primary campaign is hosting debates and demanding candidates keep it clean. Imagine the positive impact that could be generated by Republican candidates addressing issues only with no mudslinging. You want to win Independents? Doing that within the Party is going to get you megapoints of respect, even if they disagree with your position.

People are writing off Frazier too soon, IMO.
NightTwister (Diary) Sunday, August 30th at 11:36PM EST (link)He’s raised quite a bit in 2 months. We’ll be able to tell much more after the next quarter’s report. As for support, I’ll say the grassroots is extremely excited about him.
As for Buck, as far as I could tell he really was going to drop out, but is now reconsidering. Good for him.

Buck
redtillimdead (Diary) Monday, August 31st at 12:18AM EST (link)Is he a good candidate? I don’t know much about him. What are his politics like? I had been more focused of Frazier. I like him alot more than Buck.

Buck is a very good candidate.
NightTwister (Diary) Tuesday, September 1st at 1:17PM EST (link)He’s a solid conservative, both fiscally and socially. He’s well known and well liked in Northern Colorado. He’ll need money to gain recognition in other parts of the State, much as Frazier will outside of Denver.

proudgop (Diary) Sunday, August 30th at 11:44PM EST (link)I would be writing check right now if he was running against Perlumtter
If Buck drops out it probably helps Frazier though
Damn
redtillimdead (Diary) Monday, August 31st at 8:11PM EST (link)You were right! I was hoping he would drop out. I like Frazier and that’d help him. Plus, it would be less expensive if it was only Norton and Frazier.

I have no respect to NRSC.

NRSC should have been NEUTRAL when it comes to the primaries.
