From the diaries by Erick.
During the Presidential campaign, I made a comment on someone’s blog about why Sarah Palin garnered so much support by people from all walks of life. I’ve been wanting to expand on this for some time, but haven’t had the time do to so until now. That comment was,
Conservatives want to help those that can’t help themselves. Liberals want to help those that won’t help themselves.
Palin’s popularity shows that the majority of American people still support conservative values and freedom. This blog is not intended to be a rallying cry for Palin, but rather an introspective look at what Americans really want from their elected leaders, and why Republican candidates continue to fail. More importantly, I believe it can be a road map back to relevance and respect for our Party if we choose to follow it.
It should come as no surprise that Sarah Palin comes from the last frontier in the United States. Alaska is still a place where the independent, self-sufficient spirit still lives in our nation, at least to some degree. This spirit includes working hard for what you earn, and sharing with others that are less fortunate or have had a bad break. What really brought this to the forefront was her efforts to champion the cause of Down’s Syndrome children. For once, we found a politician that had genuine care about those that could not care for themselves, instead of just looking out for themselves our those that paid them to get there. But that’s the second part of freedom. I’ll get to that later.
The First Part of Freedom is Opportunity.
Opportunity is freedom. This simple truth has been proven countless times throughout out nation’s history. Now, there have certainly been times when opportunity has been denied to various groups of people during that time, but that only shows why we need to work towards making it available to everyone.
Opportunity offers the best avenue to success, but that avenue can also lead to failure. There are some that believe that the possibility of failure needs be eliminated if we care about people. The thing is, they go hand-in-hand. If you remove the possibility of failure, you also take away the possibility of long-term success.
Failure is one of the greatest teachers. Without it, we would be doomed to repeating our mistakes over and over again. It is also those failures that make our successes even more worthwhile. It also allows those around us to lend a helping hand in our time of need so we can get back on our feet again. This is what community is supposed to be about.
Our elected representatives have completely forgotten this over the past eight years. Democrats and Republicans alike have passed spending bill after spending bill, offering temporary help to their friends and supporters, while at the same time taking away everyone else’s opportunity at freedom. Rather than acknowledge the problem they’ve created, they only seek to exacerbate it by continuing to believe that they can prevent failure. This only delays the inevitable, and will hurt everyone even more. Almost everyone knows it, many acknowledge it, but it has become like a runaway train that no one seems to be able to stop.
The Second Part of Freedom is Responsibility.
Freedom isn’t free. It takes the commitment and sacrifice of every one of us to maintain it. Protecting freedom isn’t just for soldiers deployed halfway around the world, although they provide us with a wonderful example of what need to be doing here at home. Protecting freedom, means looking out for and helping those that are unable to help themselves.
How many of us complain about the public school system, but never offer to volunteer to help those that need a little extra guidance and support? Not every kid in town has the same wonderful, supportive parents that I’m sure you are to your children. The most treasured possession I have other than what my kids have given me is a bookmark I received from the parent of a special needs young girl that attended our summer vacation bible school a few years ago. As always seems to be the case, I know I received much more than she did in the exchange. For those of you that wonder why some of us are so adamantly pro-life, this is a primary reason why. We want to help those that are unable to help themselves. They have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness every bit as much as we do.
Our liberal representatives however, believe that these people are expendable. They want to give rights to terrorists who’s choices led to taking away the freedoms of so many, while at the same time doing everything they can to take away the rights of those that cannot obtain them for themselves. These people were given the responsibility to protect our rights, but seem to have forgotten that almost from the day they arrived in D.C. Reality has been turned in its head
The Third Part of Freedom is Accountability.
There are those that will tell you that all we need to do is trust the basic goodness of man. Most of us don’t really believe that though. It’s what we say to try to convince ourselves that we aren’t all that bad. Character is what we do when no one is watching. All too often we know that we fail ourselves and others when no one is looking.
Many of us that have come to this realization know that the only way we can do something about that is to make ourselves accountable to others. Knowing that we have someone to answer to when we’re alone causes us to think twice about what we’re doing.
For far too long now our representatives have failed to live up to their responsibilities. But who can blame them? We have failed to hold them accountable time, and time again. You can’t pick up a paper these days without reading about corruption at some level of government somewhere. Sure, we can point to a couple of recent instances where we tossed them out on their ear, but for those stories there are many, many more where we continue to send the same people back once again for expediency’s sake.
Perhaps its because we’ve forgotten that these people represent us. For those that have forgotten what that word means, here’s a handy definition.
To portray or depict; present the likeness of, as a picture does.
Perhaps we would do well to consider this definition of represent then next time we vote someone into a government position, whether a local school board member, or federal representative. For those that we’ve already sent, it is imperative that we hold these people accountable. Not only with their personal actions, but their votes. We can no longer stand idly by and let them give away our freedoms anymore. Technology offers us the ability to know what they’re doing and how they’re voting. Let’s use it for the good of ourselves and others.
Freedom. It’s difficult to obtain, easy to lose, and even more difficult to get back once we’ve lost it. Fight for it. For yourself, but more importantly for those that cannot fight for themselves.

It amazes me that human beings can see the same facts, witness the same events – in America they can have the same opportunity – and yet the end results are so diametrically different!
I just don’t understand why anyone would knowingly and willingly give up their rights, and want to be dependent – to be irresponsible and unaccountable?

DerKrieger (Diary) Sunday, December 14th at 11:25PM EST (link)I’d like to add something to your original statement, “Conservatives want to help those that can’t help themselves. Liberals want to help those that won’t help themselves.” and that is “Liberals want to help those that won’t help themselves and those that do not want their help.”
I want to add this because clearly the goal of Liberals is to create programs for the mostly self-sufficient in society so as to get them hooked on government in one form or another, be it government health insurance, “free” college, or “free” child care, etc. to perpetuate their power.

Conservatism
jfpurdue01 (Diary) Monday, December 15th at 12:57AM EST (link)Ronald Reagan has had such an impact on this country that most people don’t even realize. In the late 1970′s, voters had grown used to asking Presidential candidates how they were going to direct the public money in a direction that benefited them. In 1980, Governor Reagan changed that mentality for decades into people wanting government to get out of the way and let the people make this country great.
Let’s look at this from another perspective. Between the 36 years between 1980 and 2016 (at least), there will have been only two democrats elected to the White House and BOTH of them got there either by promising lower taxes (Obama) or bashing the republican candidate for raising taxes (Clinton). It should also be noted that both ran against candidates with less-than-stellar performances when it came to fiscal conservatism.
In other words, this country has remained a fiscally conservative country since 1980. This is why the Barack Obama election was NOT a bad thing for conservatives. While he will govern from the far left, he has re-energized conservatives back to the principles of limited government. Since the November election, we have seen that the future leaders of the republican party are going to come from fiscally conservative governors (i.e. Sanford and Jindal) and we’ve seen fiscally conservative congressmen (Cantor, Pence, etc) taking leadership roles in the House. Make no mistake about it: while people voted for Obama in large part because he comforted them with the idea of lower taxes, his leftist Presidency will be the best thing to happen to the GOP since 1980.
Republicans Can't Win? Who's Smoking What?
jbolaw Monday, December 15th at 1:38AM EST (link)This post is just plain silly. The writer states the following:
“and why Republican candidates continue to fail.”
Has this individual been living on the moon during the past 28 years? Republicans have been in control of the federal government for 20 of those years, almost 3/4ths of the time, with the lone exception of Bill Clinton, who really was Republican Light. Repubs also controlled the Congress while Clinton was President and spent the majority of their time obsessing about Bill’s sex life, As a result they wasted $58 million taxpayer dollars to have the wingnut, self-righteous Kenneth Starr, starring as “The Man Who Smelled Sex Everywhere,” but couldn’t prove it was Presidential sex. And then they discovered that no one really cared.
Republicans know how to win elections. They simply pander to the basest prejudices and ignorance of the American people and promise them a God fearing, all white, sexless nation, ready to bomb anyone who doesn’t love the American way. If that doesn’t work, they steal the necessary votes or get the Republican Supreme Court to award their candidate the grand prize.
Where they fail is after they’ve won or stolen the election. They don’t have a clue how to successfully run a government. So they use slogans: the war on drugs, the war on terrorism, the war on abortion, the war on nudity, the war on profanity and the war on rational thought. The slogans sound good, to an ignorant public, but don’t work. In practice, they focus only on cutting taxes for the super rich, rewarding corporate criminals, and stealing money for themselves.

Responsibility is the key
JDidSaint Tuesday, December 16th at 2:18PM EST (link)It seems to me that all three parts of freedom boil down to one of the things you list: responsibility. Responsibility to act, responsibility to our community, and responsibility for the consequences of our actions.
Despite the self-evident necessity of responsibility, it remains the enemy of liberals and even many conservatives. Abortion relieves the consequence of sex. Bailouts and bankruptcy relieve the consequences of failed business ventures. Government domination of charity (welfare, medicaid, etc.) relieves the responsibility to our community. Seat belt laws, the criminalization of marijuana, and other nanny-state legislation relieves the responsibility of educating ourselves and our community on what is right and wrong.
Government thrives on people’s unwanted responsibility and will continue to grow as long as people have responsibility that they would rather hand over. As long as a liberal is in power, people will shirk their social, legal, familial, and religious responsibilities. As long as a conservative is in power, people will shirk their fiscal, educational, and martial responsibilities. “Anarcho-libertarians,” as roscopico calls them, are the only true defenders of responsibility.
“I’d rather go through the pain of the re-emergence of free markets than endure the long suffering of a socialist state. One is natural and comes from that spark of human desire; the other is imposed and smothers the flame of ingenuity.”-Crowe (from RedState!)
Anarcho-Libertarians
Steve W (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 6:45PM EST (link)Anarcho-libertarianism, however useful as a theoretical philosophy is completely inconceivable – and is therefore a straw man. It has four major problems:
While I may not agree to the neurosis that is liberal thought – I have not seen previous “Liberal” governments “shirking” their social, legal, familial, and religious responsibilities. “We” may not agree with their priorities – or with the way that they meet those responsibilities, but it does not mean that they are “shirking” them.
For example, BO, appears to have a happy marriage, and a happy and successful family life – and appears to be a proper example in the realm of familial responsibilities.
Also, BO, has a history of attending and (I’m sure) supporting a ‘Christian’ church for an extended period of time – something that other Christians of a more conservative persuasion may or may not be able to claim. So, I may find his ‘church’ repulsive – who am I to claim that he has “shirked” his religious responsibilities. He seems to be a perfect example of how we should act in regard to our religious responsibilities.
Your inclusion of “legal” and “social” responsibilities may be a little more problematic in that what their priorities are in terms as “legal” and “social” are not in keeping with what my priorities would be in those realms – but I’m sure that their supporters feel that they are indeed supportive of those responsibilities.
Both parties have been abusive in regards to what I see as the nations fiscal responsibilities for many years – but there was a time (and that time should come again) when Rs were a party of fiscal restraint, and emphasis on Free Enterprise and Free Markets. But it is obvious that many in Washington do not see or believe that free markets are the answer to our pressing economic needs.
In regards to education – it is obvious that a change needs to be made. But the picture of what that change should be is often determined by where you’re standing.
The position that you make in regard to martial responsibilities also doesn’t pass muster. You can readily see the difference in effectiveness that an agency formed for the express mission of dealing death and destruction on the heads of those who they are aimed at (the US Armed Forces) versus the individualism of the extreme fanatics (terrorists). The terrorists can continue to cause casualties – but they will never be able to destroy those trained to act as a unit to stop them.
A single man cannot do all things that are necessary for him to live a free and useful life. It is for that reason that we need community – and until the heart of every individual burns with the fire of devotion and love and respect for every other individual we will not be able to live according to the philosophy of your “defenders of responsibility.”
The ultimate determinant in the struggle now going on for the world will not be bombs and rockets but a test of wills and ideas-a trial of spiritual resolve: the values we hold, the beliefs we cherish and the ideals to which we are dedicated.

Great response!
JDidSaint Tuesday, December 23rd at 10:44AM EST (link)Thank you for the great response, Steve W!
Truth be told, I went quite a bit off the deep end with my post. I’m a bit of a black and white thinker anyway, but I outdid myself in the post above.
For the record, I was defending Libertariansim, not Anarchism. I agree that some semblance of government is necessary. I think particularly that it should exist to oversee a defense force, establish basic “Thou Shall Not…” laws, and enforce those laws. While there are arguably some other services a government can provide (education, infrastructure, welfare…) most of the other functions can be handled more efficiently through private organizations (Catholic schools, toll roads, charities…) than through government.
When I talk about shirking responsibility, this is what I mean:
When we have a liberal government, we, the citizens, feel we can shirk certain responsibilities. Because the government invests in welfare, medicare, medicaid, etc. we feel that we don’t have to take the same social responsibility we would without those programs. With a constantly growing law force and constantly growing legal code, we don’t have the personal responsibility to keep our homes and communities free of crime (through neighborhood watch, conceal and carry, or what have you.) If school is growing, it should be taking care of moral education, alleviating our responsibility to our children. More nursing homes and medicare mean less responsibility to our parents. Welfare will take care of our brother who is disabled. Religiously I was thinking particularly about the moral education of our youth. If the government is going to tell us what is right and wrong (although under who’s authority?) than we don’t need to do the research ourselves.
Conservatism allows us to shirk some of our responsibility as well. Fiscally, we can rely on tax breaks and minimal contributions to charity (if we know how and can afford to work the system.) By being, “Tough on crime,” even crime that doesn’t affect anyone else (certain drug use, seat belt laws, smoking laws, etc.) we relieve our responsibility to research and educate ourselves on the adverse effects of certain actions. Finally, by putting our faith in a centralized military, we put ourselves at the mercy of a charismatic revolutionary. Stranger things have happened than a centralized military marching into the capital and seating a general on a throne of despotism, which is why the second amendment and the ability to form militias is crucial.
These enumerated responsibilities could certainly use some work, but let me know what you think. It seems to me that the more responsibilities we choose to give up to government, the worse job government does with the ones they’ve already been entrusted with and the more careless and foolhardy the general population can become. That’s why I support true conservatism and limited government.
“I’d rather go through the pain of the re-emergence of free markets than endure the long suffering of a socialist state. One is natural and comes from that spark of human desire; the other is imposed and smothers the flame of ingenuity.”-Crowe (from RedState!)
Responsibility and Accountability
Steve W (Diary) Thursday, December 18th at 6:55PM EST (link)I agree completely with this statement.
We are individually responsible for our own actions (or the actions we choose not to perform). We are individually responsible for the words we speak (or don’t speak). We are individually responsible for how we react to the words and actions of others. We are responsible for our own education (or lack thereof). Ultimately, we are responsible for the thoughts that we think – and – we will be held accountable for our thoughts, or words, and our actions (if not in this life) in the life to come.
The ultimate determinant in the struggle now going on for the world will not be bombs and rockets but a test of wills and ideas-a trial of spiritual resolve: the values we hold, the beliefs we cherish and the ideals to which we are dedicated.
