Sam Thurber is a moby. He’s a DfA troll who’s trying to pretend to be a Republican in order to push his ideas. Blam. – NS (with a hat tip to ML)
Bonus: Albanian folk dancing! – NS (with a hat tip to Skanderbeg)
This is admittedly a not well fleshed out idea, but I sense a gold-mine of opportunity. First lets be frank and acknowledge the Republican Party as we know it is in serious trouble. Instead of hand-wringing I’ve thought of one particularly brilliant idea (OK I was inspired by McCain’s daughter … yes I know, no need to flame me on that, I can flame myself).
Facts.
1. The Democrat party has had a stranglehold on the gay vote for decades or more.
2. The Democrats have failed to deliver.
3. Equality is truly a Republican ideal.
4. Keeping the government out of everyone’s business is another Republican ideal.
5. Elections are more and more frequently won or lost by a handful of votes. The “gay vote” could be decisive.
6.It’s where the country is headed anyway with the exception of Utah and portions of the Bible belt. Even that will all change with one Supreme Court decision (more than one constitutional lawyer has told me the once homosexuals are universally recognized as a minority, treating them differently under the law is difficult or impossible to defend legally.
7.My wife is starting to get suspicious about how much time I’m spending on this :/
So … Here’s the big postulate and before you all tell me how stupid it is, think about it for at least a few minutes. The GOP should actively support Gay Marriage/Civil Unions en mass, in fact call all civil marriages, civil unions, and give the word marriage totally and completely to the Church, with the caveat that Religious protection is written into every single civil union law (I think we are headed there without that caveat eventually … a much worse position). That should keep Evangelicals in our tent. It will prevent us from defending a “separate but equal” doctrines everyone knows don’t work, and most ingeniously, It will make the Democrats swing desperately to the far left (stupidly thinking … or should I say “emoting” that its a shit to the left by us) to try to recapture the gay vote and they will alienate their base, independents, as well as any semi-intelligent homosexuals. My take on the first 100 days is 0 days spent on the gay agenda by Obama. The gay lobby is angry, and I think we have a real opening here. Obama is a lot of things but the “conventional wisdom” that he is gay friendly is at the very least seriously dubious. That is where the GOP can truly exploit things and expand our base enough to win back both houses of congress (and the White House in 2012). If done carefully, I believe it can be done without alienating the so called religious right if every law we support also adamantly supports religious freedom to not comply. Am I off my rocker? What do you all think?

rocketeer (Diary) Monday, May 11th at 1:56PM EST (link)Declaration and acceptance of “gay marriage” is taking a society suicide pill. In brief, it says that you don’t care about raising children anymore because you aren’t giving the means of reproduction, the male/female family, the support it needs.
I prefer to not take that pill, thank you. And saying “the Republican Party will go *here*, and its members will follow” puts the cart before the horse.
So this idea is lose-lose all around.

I was just talking
lesreaper (Diary) Monday, May 11th at 2:36PM EST (link)about this with a co-worker here at Columbia today. (Talk about liberal land) He seemed to be unaware that Obama didn’t support gay marriage. “Really?” I had to point it out to him.
You’re going to get slammed here on Redstate (already banned – how dare you talk about gay people?), but I happen to agree with you about points 3 and 6. Quite frankly, liberty allows for a person to do what they want in the bedroom, and I remember Jefferson saying something about liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If someone consensually wants to do a little butt bumping or handle themselves in their community as a committed couple, it is morally presumptuous to tell them no.
One of the key issues is consent (can only be undertaken by adults, pushing out young wives, Man Boy club, etc.) Another question would be how to prevent the slippery slope of polygamy.
I know people here for the most part are against gay marriage (is marriage a governmental or religious institution anyway?) but it’s support among the younger demographic, the mini-boomlet, is pretty high. We look like bigots no matter how we arrange our argument unless it’s under the umbrella of liberty. Family and reproduction arguments are a non-starter because advocates can always point out to non reproducing couples and say how they shouldn’t be married (people unable to have children by choice or not). Moral hazard is something that few people understand and the “moral decay” argument of Gibbons is kind of outdated and shown to be false. Really, with designer babies and genetic manipulation on the horizon, are 2 committed gays really the line we want to die trying to hold?
People think this issue is about moving the party left (as neokorn, you are already banned for even suggesting a change even with you being a troll, but I forgot that Reagan put anti-gaydom as a pillar of the party), but it’s really moving it back towards the side of freedom. If they’re not hurting anyone, and they’re committed, let them be!
But hey, that’s the New GOP. The Dems went insane and the only opposition is drifting without control. Ugh.
You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness.

First off, you’re an idiot. He was banned because he is a left-wing Democrat named Sam Thurber of West Hollywood, California, an active member of Democracy for America, Howard Dean’s old organization.
Secondly, if you want to spread that lie about us, go elsewhere.
But you’re not allowed to post here anymore.

rcov092 (Diary) Tuesday, May 12th at 8:20PM EST (link)what will we define as the age of consent for horses because that is where legalizing gay “marriage” leads.
I am more leaning to the concept of “marriage” as a matter of faith and religion. Let the government define the terms of civil unions (both gay and heterosexula) and leave “marriage” to the church. at least then we will not have to fight over benefits for man/horse marriage partners.

Return to Revolution (Diary) Tuesday, May 12th at 9:59AM EST (link)Thomas Sowell wrote a great piece on the reaction to CAs prop 8 vote. Not only is the gay community trying to “redefine what marriage has meant for centuries” but their reaction to the vote (CA voted it down) was one of embarrassment. Here are the take away points:
- Gay activists apparently feel they have a “right to win”; otherwise its discrimination
- While demanding tolerance from others, gay activists apparently feel no need to show any themselves
I was reminded of this article (written in November) after the Prejean “controversy”, which has basically proven every one of Sowell’s points.
