Sarah Palin

Scope (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 10:09AM EST (link)

How do you all feel about Palin publicly remarking on the bashing she is getting now from the McCain campaign folks or others?

In one way I believe McCain took a knife to a gunfight with his campaign, but on the other hand I want Sarah to remain above the fray.

I would like to hear how Sarah would have done it differently.

QueenOfCups (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 10:15AM EST (link)

I expect she will tell us on Greta.

I don’t want to see her bash anyone, and I hope she does it with grace and respect; but I would like to know just how she would have handled things had she been allowed.

Well,

Pezman (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 10:21AM EST (link)

I like seeing Palin talk about what she is getting. I think McCain didn’t fight enough in his campaign and now that his turn is over his people want to attack someone who energized his campaign?!?!

Plus, I like a person willing to fight.

What can Bush do before he leaves office?

tankertodd (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 10:23AM EST (link)

Fox is reporting that Obama is drafting a list of Bush executive policies and orders that he’ll reverse. What can Bush do now that Obama can’t reverse upon entering office?

Judicial appointments?

Pardons? Perhaps pardons relating to the Iraq War runup and the war itself?

Removal of critters from the endangered list?

Clinton did some real nasty pardons (Marc Rich) and that seemed to be forgotten in short order. What can Bush do? Or more directly, what will Bush do given his current backbone (or lack thereof?)

jonnot Sunday, November 9th at 11:29AM EST (link)

I recently read that Harry Truman had a 23% approval rating when he left office–Bush is currently at 30%–Truman today is regarded by many as one of our better presidents. Perhaps time will recognize that during 7 of Bush’s 8 years in office we had a strong economy–during which, the Clinton’s were able to amass 10+ million dollars and the Obamas became millionaires. Bush also protected the US from further terrorist attacks after 9/11. No, I cannot forgive him for attempting to cosy up to the democrats by allowing rampant spending, not using his veto pen enough and making a mockery of illegal alien enforcement; but given the unrelenting MSM attacks from the day after his election until the present, I am surprised that he has held up as well as he has.

Let the GLBT blame their loss from the ~80% Black who voted for banning gay marriage.

..a 30% approval rating – after he ruins America.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

GOP Senate pickup possible in Del?!

weave (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 11:50AM EST (link)

From the last section of this OpEd

And there’s the scenario that Gov. Minner appoints Congressman Mike Castle as senator for two years, Carney wins a House special election, Castle retires, Carney runs for Senate in 2010 and Beau Biden runs for House. Don’t bet a dime on this one.

Some background on the politics here. Delaware politics is quite incestuous. Elected officials routinely swap roles. For example, Tom Carper (D) has been a U.S. Representative, then Governor, now Senator. Mike Castle (R) has been Governor, now Senator, and I do believe he as well was a Represenative for a bit. This is the state that for decades elected both Roth and Biden by landslides.

The current governor, Ruth Ann Minner (D) who is at end of her term limits, endorsed her Lt. Governor Carney, during a bitter primary. Markall won the Democratic primary and Minner refused to endorse him. He went on to win the governor’s seat.

Conventional wisdom is that Minner would appoint Carney to Biden’s job, but Carney has said he doesn’t want to commute to DC like Biden did.

So might Minner thumb her nose at her party and appoint Castle to Biden’s seat? Possible. She’s retiring and dropping out of politics — allegedly.

But another complication is that Biden could time his resignation on Jan 20th to be after Markall is sworn in that day as governor, dropping the task to him to appoint Biden’s replacement. Problem with that scenario is the new Delaware Senator would be 100th out of 100 for senority and get the absolute crap of everything, including office space, so conventional wisdom is Biden will resign and allow Minner to appoint, possible in time for any lame duck session of Congress. This would put the new Delaware senator ahead of freshman senators in senority.

Possible interesting times in Delaware ahead.

That old saw was reinforced once again this year.

I know most of you guys weren’t crazy for McCain when he was nominated, but we all fell in line and campaigned, blogged, and voted.

The Ds fell in love, as usual.

Unfortunately, most of the country wanted that loving feeling, not our “Next”.

Next time, maybe “love” and “next” will coincide. Technically, either Mitt Romney or Sarah Palin would be “next”. I supported Romney in the primary, but now I’m in love.

Give me Sarah! for my “next”. And hopefully American will fall in love as well.

I am trying to slowly make my way back into the fray by reading self-esteeming sites such as RS and Michele Malkin.

Am I the only one feeling gun-shy???

itrytobenice (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 12:03PM EST (link)

I’m watching the news (actually it was that analysis of the news show on Fox – I think it’s called News Watch) and they were discussing the Sarah Palin Smears.

None of those freaking morons had the sense to say, “Of course, those are stupid bald faced lies. Anyone who doesn’t think Sarah Palin knows whether or not Africa is a continent is too stoopid to live.”

Instead, they all griped that McCain had not vetted her thoroughly enough.

I’m reminded of the time one of those ignorant Yankees accused me of not knowing the American flag. I didn’t disabuse him of his stupidity, so he surely still does.

I was in New Hampshire with my sister and some of her friends. I pointed out a very large flag flying over a residence. It was the type of flag you usually see flying over a large establishment of some kind or another. I pointed it out to my mom, “Mom, look at that flag.”

And the moron we’re with says to me, “That’s the American flag.” No kidding. He really said that.

He also asked what kind of music we had back in MO.

Those ignorant turds think that they are suave and educated and that we are all Jethro and Elly Mae. I’m about to get so riled up, I’ll use Peggy Noonan’s pointy head as a weapon to spear David Brooks, Kathleen Parker, and miscellaneous other Yankee talking heads.

And, no, that wasn’t respectful, but please don’t ban me anyways. :)

Tom McClintock 50.07 156,002
Charlie Brown 49.93 155,561.

No reports of “funny business” about votes appearing magically as far as I have read, but in a district that holds a 15 percent advantage for R’s over D’s, Tom is not exactly firing up Republicans, guess Tom’s an acquired taste even in a heavy R district.

As soon as the financial crisis hit, and Bush and Paulson bungled it so badly, I knew that it was over for McCain–that no matter what he did he was going to lose.

Oh, speaking of McCain, Bill Kristol just said on Fox News Sunday, that McCain personally called his staffers and told them to knock it off (in regard to the Palin smears), and that he sent Nicole Wallace on TV on Friday to deny the rumors. I really think that people who implied that McCain had anything to do with smearing Palin were jumping the gun a bit. The smears of Palin were obviously done by a few staffers who were looking out for their own skins.

A big part of Truman’s unpopularity stemmed from 20 years of a Democrat in the WH and the stalemate that Korea had become.

Truman got rehabilitated by historians for a couple of reasons. Ike capped Korea quickly. Overall Truman was a very courageous President, stepping in to order the Bomb to end WWII for starters. His policies stood the test of time well, also.

On GWB’s side, Obama is not likely to bring the ME conflict to a satisfactory end, any end will look a whole lot more like Vietnam. What’s five or ten million dead Arabs when a cut-and-run will benefit the Democratic Party and they can blame the mess on Bush. With respect to Bush’s performance overall, he’s been firmly under his desk in the Oval Office for the last five years. He’s not only not accomplished anything, he’s not even attempted anything.

The only purpose GWB will serve from here on will be to make Jimmy Carter’s term look better.

Mr. President, goodbye and good riddance.

Yes some parts of the party were backing McClintock in his run for office, and he never really dropped out of the recall election. Arnie by the way would never have won the nod to run for office if it was up to those in control of the R party out here in CA, maybe they are being proven right. One thing in my view is true however, a recall of Davis would have failed with McClintock at the top of the R ticket.

Then Tom ran for Lt. Governor, and lost, even with Arnie backing.

As I said, Tom McClintock is an acquired taste, and it would appear that even in a heavy R district that taste is not all that tasty.

You and I have crossed opinions on the topic of Tom before, I realize you are from the part of the R party out here in CA that supports him, I am not.

Tom’s record as a successful legislator is poor, and his record as a team player in the R caucus is poor. If you value his sort of make no compromises legislating style then he’s your guy. I’ll stick with the lessons of Reagan that to be effective in government you have to work with the other party to some extent, Tom does not do that…at all…never.

The real question

SteveLA (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 12:57PM EST (link)

Niel

Have you followed the moderate and conservative D’s that Tom could have reached out to form compromise to stop the nutty D’s in the assembly? Have you followed the R caucus efforts to find compromise?

If you have an assembly member that has never voted for any budget in his whole time in the Assembly, not sure on that fact, R or D governor, you pretty much have someone who is not into working with others and who can be counted on to be a non entity in negations.

I don’t expect McClintock to be anything different in Congress than he has been in the CA assembly, another R backbencher you can count on to say NO to just about anything. He’s not a leader, other than to say NO. Hope I am proven wrong, but somehow McClintock’s history in the assembly says I won’t be.

Interesting thing about Palin

…is that both the hard right wingers and the left wing BOTH want her to get the nomination for president in 2012.

The right wingers of course, because they think she is the next big rockstar of the Republican party. The left wingers because they’re convinced she’s about four points above a moron and she’ll sink any chances for Republicans in 2012.

Hey, it might be one of the few times that the right and left wing work together to get somebody the nomination!

Not my district

SteveLA (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 1:29PM EST (link)

Neil,

I don’t follow McClintock that close, he’s not in my assembly district. I watch my own assembly types who are about to change somewhat.

There was however a slam over on RedContry from some of the Ventura county Republicans that found McClintock lacking. There’s little reason to go dig that up and post it, and it’s really not germane at this point of the race for CA 4. Tom ether wins it or looses it, and you are free to make up your mind on the state of CA Republican machine that backs him.

The point I made, and think is a valid one is that Tom McClintock represents one “flavor” of Republican in CA, and that flavor is not exactly appealing to all CA R’s, even in a rural very Red part of the state.

I have stopped watching cable news even FOX which was the only “fair and balanced” network because of the obvious media bias in favor of Obama. If the MSM is nothing more then the propaganda wing of the DNC then I’ve come to the conclusion that its a waste of my time to listen to them. Its actually quite liberating and has freed up my time for doing other things primarily self improvement and protecting myself from the coming disaster of the Obama years.I do get some news by listening to Rush and reading some conservative blogs.

I was a diehard news junky and if I have abandoned the MSM I wonder how many other Americans have done the same thing? I’ll be interested in seeing what the rating look like for cable and network news 6 months from now. Whitehorse (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 9:58PM EST (link)

When they say they want Governor Palin as the 2012 nominee. I’m sure some myopically see her as a bumpkin, however that’s how they saw GWB, Reagan, & most of us. I would not put it past some to try some reverse psychology.

That said, I’m not sure about 2012. We need to get to 2010 first, & there may be a good chance if Republicans coalesce around limited government conservatism.

Very true

Whitehorse (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 9:59PM EST (link)

I think that most of the American people who know the story want them pardoned.

The MSM

Whitehorse (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 10:08PM EST (link)

The MSM is continuing to lose viewership & power. They fired almost all of their ammo for Obama, & have very little credibility left. More people are going alternative for their news & information, & I don’t see that trend abating any time soon. Clinton had a much more powerful MSM, with the only real alternative being Rush & some other minor talk show hosts. Obama will have a weakened MSM & rabid congressional Democrats, while the alternatives have expanded. If he pushes for the “fairness doctrine,” I believe that would backfire as he makes those Biden-predicted “unpopular” decisions.

I think we know

Whitehorse (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 10:14PM EST (link)

Why the Republicans lost in 2006 & 2008. I think we also know how Republicans win.

It’s my contention the “stool” has a broken leg & needs to be mended. The leg broken is small-government fiscal responsibility. In Tennessee, our Republicans have all three legs of the stool & have been very successful – taking over the state house for the first time since reconstruction & expanding the majority in the state senate. Not only did they run as all-round conservatives, those in office have performed as all-round conservatives. As long as they do, they will win. TN, contrary to popular belief, is a diverse state. It used to be a “bellweather” state until Obama polled so badly here.

I don’t know who will be the leader who restores the stool to all three legs, however I’m ready for that leader – or those leaders – to step to the fore!

John Dingell Is A Blue Dog Democrat?

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 10:25PM EST (link)

They really are a Marxist party now. From the Hill:

“Blue Dog Democrats Friday called on the Democratic Caucus to support “moderate voices” in the slew of leadership decisions the party will be making this month.

The release did not name any of the races or contenders, but Blue Dog sources say it can be seen as preliminary support for Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) in a brewing bid for vice chairman of the caucus and Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.)”

That’s funny.

Lose the battle, win the war -- An idea for Senate Republicans

Change Jar Conservative (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 10:34PM EST (link)

Come January, the best thing that the Senate Republican caucus could do is the following.

Inform the Democrats that they will filibuster every Judicial nominee until the Democrats sign into law or senate rules or something of that nature an agreement that all Judicial nominees be handled on a strict time frame.

90 days from the vacancy to the naming of a nominee, 60 days from the naming to a committee hearing, 14 days from the hearing to the vote, 14 days from the vote to a floor vote and no filibusters.

Six months from vacancy to filling.

We lose the battle of confirming all of the nominees of a President Obama, but since we tend to fight fair anyway, this is a win in the long term for when the presidency changes in 2012.

The wonderful, healing legacy of the Obama presidency is already cast in stone, regardless of how anything turns out, including armageddon. Here’s the short version template for the apologists:

Domestic failure: Hole dug by Bush too deep to get out of in eight years.

Foreign policy failure: Cowboy diplomacy and use of force so wrecked the world’s view of U.S. that not even a messiah could make a difference.

Democrats mad at Obama: Thirst for power runs deep, even within the Democrat party, and Obama’s brave bid to change Washington runs into old line politicians.

Republicans mad at Obama, at any time, for any reason: Racists.

Country mad at Obama: McCain’s hateful campaign and choice of Sarah Palin so poisoned the electorate that Obama was unfairly blamed for epic Bush failings. Never would have run if he had known how bad things were…

etc etc etc

Heard in the Stadium

JustLeaveMeAlone (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 11:18PM EST (link)

So on this warm sunny Sunday, some of us went to an NFL game here in Houston — to watch the Texans get creamed by the Ravens.

It was lovely to see the former Commander in Chief, George HW Bush, on the field before kick-off as part of the Texans Salute to the Military Day. We Houstonians are a patriotic bunch, lack of desire to pay more taxes notwithstanding.

Up in the stands, many of those sitting around us are regulars — black, white, hispanic, young and old — and we know one another well enough to share high-fives after good plays and yell at coaches after bad ones. After a beer or two, the talk began to flow, and the jokes.

When the refs made bad calls, we yelled, “Hey! Is that like spreading the wealth — giving our points to them?” We joked about the Fairness Doctrine, arguing that the Ravens ought to have to give half their touchdowns to the Texans, in the spirit of sportsmanship, donchaknow.

Then there were the darker comments, like “I wonder if Obama will find a way to tax season tickets, seeing as we are all so rich and everything?”. We wondered aloud if the new administration will try to circumvent our unpatriotic desire to keep what we earn by slapping a surcharge on beer of, say, $4 a bottle.

I don’t know that I’ve talked politics with my fellow suffering Texans fans before, but today’s comments from the stadium were enlightening (and the standing ovation for Bush 41 was heartwarming).

Yes, we lost. We all agreed it has been a bad week. But the season isn’t over yet.

MSM

The MSM lost all credibility with their cheer leading for Obama during the election. As of Nov 5, 2008 I stopped watching both cable and network news, since the MSM appears to be the propaganda wing of the DNC.I’m sure the MSM will continue to run interference for Obama which they are already doing by stating the many challenges he will faces coming into office. This narrative is ment to explain why those tax cuts Obama promised will never happen. However, its 2008 not 1992 and many people no longer believe the MSM, there is also the alternative media where Obama’s every gaffe can be reported. Obama quickly apologized to Nancy Reagan because alternative media took the story and ran with it.

Officially, China is a communist country. But the reality is that they actually operate somewhere between communism and capitalism – socialism?

Communism is just a label, not the reality.

The Legacy Media will continue to be enamored to liberalism and European-style of governance (aka socialism).

They are nothing but the trumpeteers of Obama.

Let them die a natural death and let new media outfits with journalistic integrity emerge.

and raises. He blasts President Bush pretty good this week and rightfully so IMO.

Nevertheless, Bush is the GOP’s Jimmy Carter, a weak bumbler who embarrassed his constituents, betrayed his philosophical movement, sank his party, and eventually surrendered the White House to the opposition, this time led by the Senate’s Number One liberal, still in his first term. Bush should retire quietly to Texas, where he can drive his truck, chop wood, and avoid the limelight for the balance of his natural existence.

College hoops will be start soon. Maybe our beloved Blue Devils will have a great season this year.

To me, “consensus” seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects … There are still people in my party who believe in “consensus” politics. I regard them as Quislings, as traitors … I mean it. — Margaret Thatcher

Whitehorse, did you know that even though TN Repubs have the majority,

janis (Diary) Monday, November 10th at 8:25AM EST (link)

they are STILL going to allow a liberal Dem to be the SecState? Yes, indeed, because Rosalind Kurita got slapped by her own party for not supporting ex Lt. Gov. John Wilder, thereby allowing Ron Ramsey (R) to become Lt. Gov., the Repubs gave money to her campaign for re-election, then gave tons more for her special election due to the vote count, and now will reward her by giving away such an important post.

And by now, we are all aware just how important the position of SecState is, particularly in the election process. Even when we win, we’re still the stupid party.

SG,

I think we can peep and touch at the stand… but not buy, specially if Rolling Stone is featuring our fav bands. Subscription is already a BIG NO!

And I agree. It’s a good start. Later we can religiously stop buying WAPO, NYT, LAT, etc. Our boycot must also include their local networks.

It's ok, I'm in Elton Gallegly's district.

What is amazing about California is that the Democrats have spent the State broke yet there are people who actually have jobs and pay taxes that keep electing them. This is where the RINO CA party has missed a great opportunity.

They’ve given up on the internationalist bit, and instead are working for the prosperity and superiority of the ‘Han race’ and for One China.

In other words, they’re following the model of Nazi Germany. Seriously, look at what they’re doing and compare with what Hitler did.
