Flashback: Dems Supported Punishing Sanctuary Cities When Obama Ordered It

While Democrats continue to claim that everything President Trump does is unethical and unconstitutional, they claim to be against things today that they used to support.

Democrats are outraged following Attorney General Jeff Sessions statements Monday afternoon at the White House press briefing that called for “sanctuary cities” to comply with federal law or risk losing federal funding.

“This administration not only is trying to bully law enforcement and make them ICE agents, but they’re trying to bully immigrant families. This is not who we are as a country,” declared DNC chief Tom Perez.

Perez, as well as many other Democrats, failed to mention that former President Obama administered similar policies in 2015 when he worked with House GOP members to pressure his Justice Department to announce that “some federal funding to the sanctuaries would be cut off” if those jurisdictions did not comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

When the Obama administration wanted to deport illegal immigrants and force sanctuary cities to comply with the law, Democrats championed the efforts by “their president.”

Now that the Trump administration is following laws already on the books, also used by the Obama administration, Democrats are acting as if Trump’s efforts are unprecedented.

The Texas lawmaker who pressured Obama in 2015 chimed in today, adding that Sessions is merely “enforcing the Obama policies.”

In a statement, Rep. John Culberson said:

“As the chairman of the Commerce, Justice and Science Subcommittee on Appropriations, I am committed to providing resources to our law enforcement officials and restoring the rule of law in our country. Last year, I persuaded Attorney General Loretta Lynch to change the Department of Justice’s policy so that sanctuary jurisdictions are no longer eligible to receive federal law enforcement grants going forward.

Today, Attorney General Sessions reaffirmed the administration’s pledge that cities who receive our hard-earned tax dollars must be in compliance with federal immigration law, and I will continue to conduct the necessary oversight to ensure that jurisdictions who protect criminal illegal aliens do not receive federal law enforcement grant money.”

In a Fox News poll conducted two weeks ago, 33 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of sanctuary cities whereas 37 percent of Americans have an unfavorable opinion.
