Florida Senate and House Calling A Special Session For High Speed Rail

The Florida Senate and House are calling a Special Session for this December 3rd and for it to run to Wednesday the 11th. The issue is the future and funding of High Speed Passenger Rail, specifically, a High Speed Rail between Tampa and Orlando.

Here is a link of the Call for Special Session.

Here is a link to a summary of the Proposed Legislation provided by Senator Jeff Atwater.

Here is a Link to the Letter Senator Atwater sent out explaining the reason for the special session.

Here is a anti-rail summary presented (for now) without comment. (h/t Mr Sid Dinerstein)

I am currently doing research on this issue and expect to hear from sources inside the State Senate with regards to the actual scope and cost of this endeavor.

I will publish a post on Saturday on what I have found out about the economic consequences of building this rail system. I encourage everyone getting or reading this post to look into the economics (including tax burdens and revenue requirements) of moving people in Florida by rail.

I will say this. Calling for this Special Session during the time when most people’s attention are focused on getting their own lives in order in preparation for the Christmas Season is not amusing. The sheer scope of this effort means that NO FUNDS should be appropriated until our representatives in Tallahassee can come home after the special session and hear from their constituents regarding this issue.

For Florida, this is the state equivalent of the Health Care debate that is occurring in Washington. Time, coupled with thoughtful and deliberate consideration, is called for.

THERE SHOULD BE NO RUSH TO PASS THIS BILL BY DECEMBER 11th.

The Disney Choo-choo

Here in Nevada, as you may have heard since Reid made such a to-do about it, we’re “debating” high speed rail vs maglev between Vegas and Anaheim. Both are astronomically expensive, although maglev, while exciting technologically, is in the billions, if I recall correctly. Neither project can afford private-only funding. Maybe the Disney empire can kick down for thee and for me, since they seem to be the recipients of all this train travel.

Hmmmmmm.....Knew this was coming........

Our organization (along with most others in the state) are of the mind that our lovely and positively upstanding State Legislature in Trailerhassee shouldn’t work a single piece of legislation before dealing with that bothersome 10th Amendment thingy we’ve been on them about.

We’ll see what happens………. Off to get a few e-mails sent…. Back in a bit.

So the Florida Legislature still wants to this

It seems like a small version of the Texas T-Bone. Really as small in size that Florida is, shouldn’t just try to attract an intrastate airline?

Let’s Bankrupt the Democratic paty. Make spend all the money to defend thier candidates.

We already have service from Miami and Ft. Lauderdal on Southwest

rail will cost as much and take twice as long.

Well part of my airline is intrastate

That should keep Louisiana from thinking of Rail Network. I still have to get the manuals fixed. I personally think a good intrastate airline(Southwest isn’t really that at all) would do the trick.

Call It Count Railula..Fla. Taxpayers Have Driven A Stake Into It...

but it will not die. Every release from the High Speed Rail Commission has always shown this to be an economic loser requiring taxpayer subsidies and the people voted to deny the funding for the original constitutional Amendment authorizing it because the economics do not work.

But it will not die. But now, for some reason, because the Federal Government wants to throw our taxpayer money down the rat hole it is ok for the GOP to jump on board. I swear their is no limit to the stupidity of some people. Even Crist who is now trying to convince us he was not “for” the stimulus, is leading the charge. How many times do you have to shoot yourself in the foot before you realize you should not point it at your toe and test the pull on the trigger? See the link for the long sordid history.

I think Crist is taking a different lesson from shooting himself in the foot

Next time, aim higher.

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

Pesky facts didn't stop MN from getting light rail.

Common_Cents (Diary) Tuesday, December 1st at 3:24PM EST (link)

Light rail can make sense when you have enough density and traffic but in MN it is a freakin joke. I bet we don’t get the population density to even make it work in 20 yrs.

Budgets blown by a double factor and ridership fees only pay less than 30% of maintenance costs, let alone the billion or two to build them. I guess I’d love it too if the state gave me a new car and paid 70% of my maintenance costs too.

If you will remember, when Miami Dade County got Rail

rcov092 (Diary) Tuesday, December 1st at 3:36PM EST (link)

back in the 80′ Reagans manager of Budget Office came out ans said it would have been cheaper if the Feds had bought every rider of the metrorail a chauffered limo rather than pay for the system. At the time, the system had less that 9,000 riders a day when financial projections said it needed 100,000 to break even. At one point Dade wanted to shut it down but could not because the Feds said they would have to pay back the 650 million dollars the FEds paid for construction. Looooooooooooooooooooooooooser!

Even today ridership is less than 70,000 a day:

Can you say looooooooooooooooooooooooooser? As far as I know, there are only 3 rail syatems in the country that break even or exceed operating costs (Atlanta, NY, San Fran). Massive, massive #fail despite billions in taxpayer money.

This might get ugly.......... The Special Session Is Raaaaaaaaaaacist.

Some folks might say a few people are always looking for a reason to play the race card.

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/florida/story/1360953.html

A special legislative session on controversial rail projects and their funding faces the threat of racial discord because African American legislators want the session delayed so they can attend a long-planned national conference in Fort Lauderdale.

The legislative session is scheduled to begin Thursday in the Capitol with or without the participation of many African American legislators.

The annual conference of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators starts Wednesday with about 400 African American legislators from across the country in attendance. Senate President Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach, agreed to excuse African American senators from attending the largely ceremonial start of the session Thursday. House Speaker Larry Cretul did the same, even though the House has scheduled a seven-hour meeting on the legislation, also on Thursday.

snip

Adding to the tension is that legislative leaders cite the need to end the session by noon Dec. 11 to allow Jewish lawmakers to be home by sundown for the start of Hanukah.

======================

When you click on the link and read through, I think you’ll notice some subtle inferences throughout the article. Gee I wonder what political leaning the writers have ?

Anyway, this afternoon, Jeff Katz (WFTL-AM) had a member of The National Black Caucus of State Legislators on the air – last name was Sands – no idea where he was from. The guy was looking for a reason to scream racism…… and wouldn’t answer any direct questions without qualifying statements about the organization and it’s members wanting to do the proper thing, whatever that means in their left-wing minds.

Regarding the Hanukah timing…….
The Florida Legislators are anti-Semites ! They scheduled a special session to end on the day the ‘long-planned’ Hanukah celebration begins ! They hate all Jews and want us gone !

See how stupid that sounds ?

Here’s a hint:

This special session is completely about money, political power and payback from every single piece of dirt politician to their donors and owners……..full of “hope” that they’ll get some of that can-never-be-justified stimulus money (because all of ‘em sucked up to our Dictator In Training Pants) and “change” their business…… Supposedly all for building a high-speed railway system running between Tampa and Orlando that NOBODY IN THEIR RIGHT MIND wants, NOBODY IN THEIR RIGHT MIND will use, NOBODY IN THEIR RIGHT MIND thinks will ever turn a profit in it’s entire existence……..

…………..and NOBODY has the slightest idea how many unions are already and will be involved with this to drive up the costs and project time, call a strike at the drop of a tissue and generally cause mayhem and chaos throughout the state’s transportation system……..

Also, since it’s mostly Federal dollars (as in YOUR MONEY), the unimaginable level of control Los Federales will have over every single aspect of construction, especially via The EPA and their never-seen list saying “you can NEVER build anything here because of “x” animals being endangered”. The money is coming from Uncle Barry and his merry band of Constitutional usurpers…… He has a few ideas (and a bunch of enforcers and the media) to have things done his way…… the Communist way….. bow to him.

What are the National Black Caucus of State Legislators members missing a trip to Cuba?

Like their federal cousins? They could all come back raving about how wonderful it is.
