Republicans Can Recapture Congress With a Pledge


Many have said that the republicans have to have a new Contract For America in order to recapture control of Congress. I believe that a pledge to America to do the right thing would prove that conservatives are not irrevelant.

Republicans should pledge allegiance to the people of America, not the power brokers and lobbyists.

An oath that says America will be free from big government and deficit spending.

Unsuccessful programs will be scrapped and money returned to the Treasury.

Repeal the Campaign Finance Reform Act or disallow all corporate or organizational contributions, including PAC money.

Enact Comprehensive TORT reform to protect the innocent from frivolous and unreasonable judgements, and a loser pays in all cases to eliminate nuisance law suits.

Pledge that members of Congress will be honest and ethical.

All bills will be posted on-line for a minimum 3 business days before voting on enactment.

Members must submit, in writing, the purpose of all official trips and a detailed itinerary, with estimated costs, to the House and Senate Finance Committees for approval. The trip leader will provide a detailed trip report upon return with receipts for all expenditures and justifications for expenditure. These reports will then be published on-line for informational purposes to the American people.

Any Congressional committee chairman that is under investigation by the House or Senate Ethics Commitees will be removed, temporarily, until the investigation is completed and a resolution is determined.

The Congress will never become involved with the private sector, other than through necessary regulations that maintain a free and open market place.

All presidential advisors (czars) will be vetted by the FBI and security clearances be obtained. The information will be made public along with the salary of each.

Earmarks inserted in any spending bill will be eliminated. No more free money to projects that have not been presented and debated by the House and Senate.

No unfunded mandates will be placed on the States.

The Tenth Amendment of the Constitution will be adhered to by the Congress.

An amendment to the Constitution that will allow the States to add additional requirements on their Members of Congress and Senate, such as term limits, residency requirements, behavior while in office, time in districts or state during sessions and etc.

Immigration laws will be strictly enforced. No illegal alien or native born child of an illegal alien will be provided health-care, except for life threatening emergency treatment, education, or welfare. All deportations will be swift. Any employer of illegal aliens will be imprisoned and fined. Borders will be secure and patrolled by Border Patrol and when necessary the US military.

This pledge to the American people will prove that conservative principles are indeed real and will provide the Republican Party a justifiable control the Congress.

But I think he’s saying that anchor babies will be treated the same as their law-breaking parents. They’re ALL illegal no matter where they were born. The 14th Amendment has been stretched way out of proportion to what it was written to address, which was for the native born children of former slaves.

…any program that attempts to distinguish between a citizen whose parents are illegal aliens, and a citizen whose parents are not. Line in the sand: I refuse to endorse any scenario where the definition of ‘citizen’ can be an issue to be settled retroactively by the legislature. Particularly not this one… so if you’re born here, you’re a citizen*. Period.

So would you support a plank that said that the matter is not resolved and should be the subject of a court case and an eventual Supreme Court ruling on what the Constitution actually means in this area?

The Constitutional question is are children born of illegal aliens subject to the jurisdiction thereof, and I would like to see a court case to determine what those words mean.

I believe that this proposed amendment would settle the question of the so-called “anchor babies”.
It’s like having an uninvited guest come in to your house, then refuse to leave. Demanding that you provide all required sustenance, health and medical care, educate them in their native language and for you to learn their language and observe their customs. Plus allow them to have children that you will also support.
Where in the world would this be tolerated?

So, if they live in the United States and are subject to United States law, which children of illegal immigrants are, then they are citizens. At least, that’s my interpretation. It’s obviously not the only one, and I have no legal expertise in this matter.

But I don’t agree. Why should someone get a lifetime of US benefits just because their mom managed to get over the finish line in time to give birth here? And then get to have “chain immigration” for God knows how many generations because of that one act? An act, I might add, that we the taxpayers most likely had to foot the bill for in the first place.

As for diplomats, the average run of them, if the UN is any indication, shouldn’t be allowed in the country for any longer than it takes to do some official business and then get themselves gone. Why on earth would you want to make their offspring American citizens, Moe?

Because this issue is not settled in the Constitution nor has it ever been the subject of a court case. Until it is, there will be a question mark on how to deal with children born of illegal aliens.

Actually, I think the right answer is SR 6 which I gave a link to above, it does clarify the question but probably will take a Constitutional amendment.

…could be used as an excuse to force a change in the law. Unlikely, but I decline to take the risk. There are entire groups who would dearly love to go through family histories for two, three, four (hi!), or more generations of American ancestors to find an illegal, thus giving them an avenue of attack on an enemy’s right to the franchise. Only defense against that is to make the rule ironclad, and never mind the anchor babies.

In short, I oppose this not for the sake of other people’s kids; I oppose this for mine.

the same fears that you express, Moe. And would be quite likely to be just as vulnerable if someone ferreted around far back enough in the records. Which are not always correct in any event.

So how about taking up SJR 6 and putting a deadline into how far back you can go? Say, for instance, you can’t throw ‘em out any farther back than 1986, which was the last time they were granted amnesty.

As for diplomats, here’s a solution: Put all diplomatic offices somewhere offshore and do business by email and video conferencing. Somewhere with the climate and shopping opportunities of Attu off the coast of Alaska.
