Wisconsin: Democratic Senators losing unit cohesion?

There’s some confusion going on with regard to the intentions and plans of the fourteen AWOL Democratic state senators from Wisconsin who have been hiding from their job responsibilities for the last two weeks. They are or are not or are or are not or are or are not* about to give up and just come back in; what is actually going to happen is still to be determined. On the other hand, it’s easy enough to see what did happen over the weekend: the fourteen AWOL senators lost whatever unit cohesion that they might have had in the first place. Two weeks of living on the lam and being politely chased by private citizens with video cameras will do that to a group, after all.

You see, we tend to forget that politicians are not identical, like potatoes: these fourteen men and women are just that – men and women – and it’s easy to believe that they’re getting tired, sore, and fuming about how they’ve somehow become the surrogate whipping boys for a national debate on public sector unions. Some of them might even be thinking that they didn’t actually sign up for this, that this wasn’t in the job description, and that the people urging them to exile in Illinois might not really give a tinker’s dam about them or their problems. And that this situation that they’re in is getting old. Oh, sure, no doubt a few of the AWOL senators are having a ball… but some of them are not, and the loss of message discipline in the last few days shows that.

And it only takes one AWOL senators to end this nonsense.

PS: Via @kevinbinversie: the Democratic Senators want a sit-down with the Governor. At least, that’s what Wisconsin Senate Minority Leader Mark Miller says. How much clout he has with his colleagues to make a deal right now is very much up in the air.

They've been playing this game for days

IronDioPriest (Diary) Monday, March 7th at 11:28AM EST (link)

“They’re breaking/no they’re not”. It’s been going on like this for days.

In my opinion, Walker and the WI GOP made a crucial error in not aggressively undermining the fleebaggers before they had a chance to demagogue.

They should have immediately – the day after the Democrats fled: -scheduled a vote for concealed carry legislation.
-scheduled a vote for voter ID law.
-separated the collective bargaining reform from the fiscal reform, and scheduled a vote on all aspects of reform not related to the budget.

Instead, they dithered, trying to win a public relations battle that they have been losing steadily since day two of the unethical walkout by the Democrats. Walker has talked tough, but has shown no will to take the fight to the Democrats, who were clearly in the wrong – and perceived so by the public immediately following the walkout. Now the water is muddied, and Walker and the GOP are dealing with enacting these reforms AFTER public opinion has been worked against them, rather than having to deal with petulance and demagoguery after the fact.

Right On.

I’d add “Make Wisconsin a Right-to-Work” state to that list. I don’t understand why Gov. Walker and the GOP didn’t press their advantage.

yes, right to work too

Great point. ANY item on a laundry list of GOP initiatives that would be sure to drive the Left insane should have been moved forward toward passage, ON DAY TWO. The GOP should have dared the fleebaggers to stay away for those crucial votes.

Instead, here we are, wondering whether resolve will hold together.

I hate to say it, but this is the normal state of affairs for the GOP. Their genteel approach has been their M.O. for their entire history, and, well, here we are on the brink.

If Greg Sargent and Ezra Klein Say It Isn't Over...

IJB Monday, March 7th at 11:43AM EST (link)

…it’s OVER.

Those guys are never right about anything. Looks like the WI GOP may stumble into a huge win, quite despite themselves.

Can’t wait to see what idiots like Sargent and Klein say when *that* happens!

I thought that if Walker 'answered the phone' it was a sign he caved

katesmith (Diary) Monday, March 7th at 11:53AM EST (link)

I thought it was said from day one that if Walker picked up the phone or agreed to meet with the Flees he was toast, ie he had lost. He’s not alone as long as he doesn’t cave. If he caves, he will be a joke to both sides. Also, I don’t understand why some people are ready to conclude bad things about Walker based on polls without analyzing the methods of the polls. (I’m not referring to anyone at this site). I looked at one poll from a group called WPRI, allegedly not communist, but the wording in the questions sounded like a communist had written them. There was no qualitative data about the respondents except age and education. It really should have been thrown in the trash, but a lot of people apparently believed it.

I am sick of the term "negotiate"

pizzaguy (Diary) Monday, March 7th at 12:19PM EST (link)

My employees have never tried to “negotiate” coming to work because they don’t like mopping floors. If a GOP in ANY state ever pulls this kind of crap I will be the first to contribute to his primary opponent. Listen to your president who said something once that actually made sense “elections have consequences”. Put on your big boy pants and do your job!

Most recent thing I read...

LibertarianHawk (Diary) Monday, March 7th at 12:25PM EST (link)

….actually suggested that a critical mass of Senate Republicans (which is just 3) was getting ready to fold on the collective bargaining aspect of the budget repair bill.

Maybe it’s not a coincidence that we’re reading these things at the same time. It looks like they may have their own “Gang of 14″ — and if it involves a small number of Senate Republicans, you can rest assured that Walker & Co. will have mostly come out on the short end.

Our Senators need to hear our voice!

dshaffner Monday, March 7th at 1:54PM EST (link)

They seem to be ignoring the people! Lets all group our discontent and advice to them in one location that can be shared with them directly. If we all voice our opinions maybe the collection of all our thoughts will be heard. I fount this site that seems to do just that. Stay longer; pay Illinois Taxes

polarglen Monday, March 7th at 2:57PM EST (link)

I think we, in Illinois, should start charging them for out-of-state income. I don’t think they’d like it much — our state income taxes just got raised more than wiping out the federal temporary payroll tax cut. I also suggest they come to Cook County, at least those that are not regulars on Fox News from Foxes’ Chicago station, and find out what real sales taxes amount to. Ah, the tax implications of all democrats all the time.

The real PR war will begin when they return

vamoose Monday, March 7th at 3:38PM EST (link)

This is how I think it will unfold.

Dem Senators will allow one of their senators to wander into Wisconsin, be captured by state police and frog-marched into the senate chamber where a quorum will then be present and GOP senators will jam down their legislation stripping the unions of their collective bargaining rights. At least this is how the MSM will report it. In addition, the member who gives himself up will have a hostage-like appearance complete with three-days growth of whiskers, wrinkled clothing, and perhaps a bath robe. MSM cameras will conveniently be their to capture the moment as the evil Republicans basically steamroll a homeless man.

The GOP better be ready for this because what it marks is the status of a PR campaign like never before. The GOP needs to let the haggard Dem go home and get cleaned up before ever taking him to the senate chamber. They then need to wait a day before voting, with the returnee on a short leash, to see if more Dems will return. Then vote and have the governor rescind most, if not all, of the layoff notices.

I have also read that one senate Dem is pregnant. She will probably be used to test the evil Republicans. I say, hands off her. Let her take as much time as she needs. It will keep the pressure on the Dems to return. The same thing would apply to funerals and other hardships. Once back in the state for whatever reason the return to the senate chamber needs to be voluntary. Any bad behavior on the part of the GOP will be magnified by the MSM to overshadow the weeks of bad behavior on the part of Dems.

If this were on a federal level, Snowe, Collins, McCain, Brown, Graham, Lugar and who knows who else would be cutting deals with the Dems who fled nt
