Many of these incidents happen because as more assaults are shown where the person gets away with it and does not have to seek help for a twisted nose, it empowers those idiots to try it themselves.

You can make a citizens arrest having witnessed or been the actual victim of a criminal act. At least in NY you can. It might be of interest to all to investigate their laws regarding what right you may have to keep a criminal at bay until proper arrest can be made, when force is proper and when you may preserve your life with deadly force. Talk to your local sheriff, DA or judge.
