“O-klahoma!”

Some interesting details from last night’s primary:

  • Rep. Mary Fallin won her gubernatorial primary and is well on track to flip the governorship from Democrat to Republican this fall.  The voters apparently decided to forgive her for TARP; it doesn’t look like they’re quite ready to forgive Lt. Governor Jari Askins for being a Democrat.  It’s that kind of year.
  • Rep. Dan Boren (D-no-seriously, OK-02) likewise demonstrated that voting against the health care bill is not precisely a deal-killer; he easily crushed his primary opponent, darn it.
  • In OK-05, it’s Club For Growth (Kevin Calvey) vs. the Tea Parties (James Lankford)… and whoever wins gets the seat, essentially.
  • Tom Coburn had a primary.  It went about as you’d expect; I really do wish that there was some way to convince the DSCC to potlatch some money on Coburn’s Democratic opponent, but that would require actual mind control rays to accomplish.

The most important lesson there seems to be coming from the gubernatorial race, which is easily the most competitive of the ones mentioned. Essentially, this isn’t a Democratic year, despite the hopes of the Democrats that this would be just an anti-incumbent one; when you’re an incumbent Lt. Governor and 40% is your ceiling, you are officially in trouble.  Democrats are, of course, more than welcome to ask themselves “What’s the matter with Oklahoma?”, particularly if it means that they don’t worry about the problem generally…

Why Is No One Focusing on The OK-02 GOP Race?!

IJB Wednesday, July 28th at 1:17PM EST (link)

Most of the reporting (Politico actually excepted) hasn’t even reported on it.

But we’ve got to figure out who between veterinarian Charles Thompson and farmer Daniel Edmonds is the better candidate against Boren, and then we’ve got to get money to that guy, pronto!

Boren is beatable if people just get serious about this race!

a little bit about farmer Dan from his website

While completing studies, Daniel took a semester from his studies to serve as the Agricultural Legislative intern at the State Capitol in Oklahoma City. Having his interest in government heightened, Daniel then traveled to Washington, D.C., where he served as the Agricultural Policy intern under Congressman Frank D. Lucas (R, OK-3). While in Washington, Daniel learned a great deal about the internal, day-to-day operations of a U.S. Congressional office.

His great deal of learning about a DC office may endear him more to the establishment Rs than does the veterinarian, but it also may be a negative to the local folks in the district. The fact they have to spend money for the runoff means the winner will have even less money to wage the campaign against Boren.

GOP turnout in OK GOP primary

http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?subjectid=262&articleid=20100728_262_0_hrimgs724154

Record GOP turnout while democrat turnout is about 40% lower then its all time high.

This is midterm election primary voter turnout.

So far in 2010 the GOP has set primary records for mid term turnout in Maine-South Carolina-Georgia-Alabama-Kentucky-Indiana-Arkansas-Texas-Oklahoma-New Mexico-Nevada

Next week I predict we will see a new turnout record for republicans in Kansas plus my home state of Tennessee.

So who is fired up?
