Mort Zuckerman dismisses Obama.

Ouch.

Obama clearly wishes to do good and means well.

As I’ve mentioned in the past, that’s pretty much the worst thing that you can say about a person in English.  It’s what you fall back on when you can’t credibly claim competence or experience for somebody.

Via Riehl World View.  Read the whole thing, although with a title like “World Sees Obama as Incompetent and Amateur” you almost don’t have to.  It is… instructive… to consider that it’s hard to come up with an ally whom we haven’t insulted in the last two years.  Canada’s upset over our trade shenanigans.  Great Britain feels like it’s being repeatedly kicked because of the President’s daddy issues.  India is wondering why the heck the White House isn’t interested in building on Bush’s outreach.  Israel’s visibly deciding that the American government is more likely to condemn Holocaust II than it is to prevent it.  Western Europe’s getting exasperated with our fiscal policy, Eastern Europe’s getting nervous at our willingness to let the Russians repossess them, and we even managed to tick off Japan over the Okinawa air base thing.  And don’t get me started on South America.   About the only ally that I can come up with as being still more or less unscathed by our foreign policy is maybe Australia.

Now watch: the President will get caught on tape sneering at [ yellow tail ], or something.

Shouldn't be a surprise

It might just be that the world sees him as incompetent and amateur because he is an incompetent amateur.

Obummer's HAS hit-it-off with Australia...

Chalk that up to the fact that Kevin Rudd’s almost as out-there as he is.

Unsettlingly, Dear Leader doesn’t seem get along with normal, sensible people tho… foreign nor domestic. Actually, he doesn’t even seem to KNOW any normal people- I’d be hard pressed to name one

he's also "likable enough"

…whether Zuckerman is surprised by the failures of the incompetent radical in the White House, or if he’s saying, “I told you so.” If it’s the latter, good; indicates Zuckerman has been paying attention right along.

One more thought:

I do disagree somewhat with Zuckerman’s conclusion that Obama means well and wants to do good. “Good” to a dogmatic radical isn’t quite the same thing as it is to the rest of us.

And what about the tired contention that O is smart?

Locked and Loaded (Diary) Monday, June 21st at 10:35AM EST (link)

Smart people don’t regularly command audiences that are thoroughly disengaged and appear brain-dead. I just don’t think we have any evidence he is smart.

How dare you question the intelligence of a constitutional law professor?

earlgrey (Diary) Monday, June 21st at 10:47AM EST (link)

I am of the opinion that there people are smart in different ways. One of my favorite little sayings I learned from an entrepreneur whose company I was working with is. . .

“Some people get to be so smart they don’t know when to come in from the rain.”

I also think that people that think they are smart can be especially dumb. they are so wrapped up in themselves that they fail to realize all the signs around them that they are wrong.

Finally, many brilliant people are dismissed as stupid because either they didn’t attend the right college (or any college) and/or they speak in simple common sense language, which can only be done when you actually know what you are talking about.

I don't think Obama is any kind of smart

JSobieski (Diary) Monday, June 21st at 11:45AM EST (link)

unless reading out loud from a teleprompter makes someone smart.

There has to be a reason why they never released his grades from anywhere (not that good grades makes you smart).

For all the talk about Bush not being intellectually curious, I don’t think we have had a President in my lifetime who is less capable of explaining the position of the other side. There is a reason why Obama sticks to straw-men carricatures—he genuine doesn’t understand the other side and isn’t even curious enough to educate himself.

Bottom line: Some doctrinaire liberals are smart in specific fields, but I don’t see that Obama is particular smart in any particular area.

My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

STOP THE MADNESS!

A reduction in the rate of spending increases is NOT a cut!
In-state tuition for illegals is NOT amnesty!
Requiring someone to pay their medical bills is NOT an individual mandate!
Reducing tax rates is NOT a tax increase!

You are probably right, I think my beef was more with what people call

earlgrey (Diary) Monday, June 21st at 12:01PM EST (link)

“smart” these days than with any proof of him being smart. I wish he would give speeches all the time. Everyday would be good.. That way more people could get an idea of how smart he is.

Honestly I think when I wrote that post I was thinking more about GWB. I am so tired of them making fun of him for not being smart. Most of the people making snide comments tend to come off as being pretty stupid to me.

I think most Presidents have been smart in at least some areas

JSobieski (Diary) Monday, June 21st at 1:12PM EST (link)

but I agree with your assessment that smart confident people tend to develop blind spots, of which Bush had several.

Obama is just one giant blind spot.

'smart', 'intelligent' or 'educated'?

From ME to You (Diary) Monday, June 21st at 2:27PM EST (link)

They aren’t equivalent!

‘Educated’ essentially means you were able to regurgitate the material to your instructors satisfaction.

‘Intelligent’ has different definitions but to me it means able to look at data and come to a conclusion that fits the facts.

‘Smart’, that’s usually how you feel after getting slapped around by reality!

I don’t think he is smart or intelligent, just very smug. I went to U of Michigan law school, and never a couple of people who were very similar to Obama. People without any desire/motivation to prove anything—they were just that smug.

Apologies for the typo–cat wanted to play.

When someone’s entire belief system is predicated upon a notion of equality based upon station instead of opportunity, even if their heart is supposedly in the right place, you get a Carter and/or an Obama. (And you’ll never convince me either of their hearts have anything “right” within them, when it comes to their true wishes for this country.)

It doesn’t matter one bit he “wishes to do well.” What matters is either that he is too much of a zealot to reverse his course in the face of clearly catastrophic results. Or, more likely, that destruction is and always has been his intention.

I'm starting to think that Obama is mentally DAMAGED

Teresa in Fort Worth, TX (Diary) Sunday, June 20th at 11:46AM EST (link)

rather than just mentally “off”. He just doesn’t seem to feel ANYTHING in a “normal” way. It’s almost as if some of the connections that we take for granted just aren’t present in his brain.

I’m not one for unsubstantiated rumors, but I have heard more than one source say that photographers have been told not to take pictures of him from his right side. The few that you do see seem to show what looks like a surgical scar. Plus, he wouldn’t release his medical records. Might it be possible that he had an injury due to physical abuse when he was younger that required surgery? It certainly isn’t beyond the realm of possibility.

It would be interesting to know if a brain scan would show evidence of a previous brain injury. He certainly doesn’t seem to understand some of the finer points of what is socially acceptable….

Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride…..

narcissistic personality disorder. From the Am. Psy. Assoc, these are a few
characteristics :l. Believes he is “special” & can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high status people/ institutions. 2. Requires excessive admiration 3. Has a sense of entitlement 4. Selfishly takes advantage of others to achieve his own ends. 5. Lacks empathy
6. Often envious of other or believes others are envious of him 7. Shows haughty, patronizing, or contemptuous behaviors or attitudes. For me, it is the very definition of O.

I don’t know what Obama’s excuse is, but Australia is in the process of implementing Communist-style website filters and free speech restrictions. I think the Obama administration had actually criticized this policy recently, though it was likely just for show (which pretty much describes his approach to foreign policy).

“The ultimate touchstone of constitutionality is the Constitution itself and not what we have said about it.” -Felix Frankfurter

He wants to do the same here

callawyn (Diary) Sunday, June 20th at 9:29PM EST (link)

If he did, I’m sure it was just for show, he’s trying to get federal control over the internet here. Trying to do it with the FCC and now the FTC, to control access (bandwith), content and how we pay for access (it’d be ‘free’, ie. paid for with taxes, so the half of America that pays taxes would pay for their own access as well as the access of the other half of America).

You will find this:

In his Cairo speech about America and the Muslim world, Obama managed to sway Arab public opinion but was unable to budge any Arab leader. Even the king of Saudi Arabia, a country that depends on America for its survival, reacted with disappointment and dismay. Obama’s meeting with the king was widely described as a disaster. This is but one example of an absence of the personal chemistry that characterized the relationships that Presidents Clinton and Bush had with world leaders.

I highlighted the key; how could Obama have any “personal chemistry” with other world leaders? He’s a neophyte, in their company only because of the arcane formula that the Democrat Party uses to pick a candidate, elected by voters in a temper tantrum about the other party and attempting to assuage their own “white guilt.” Other world leaders have been through the mill, they’ve earned their positions either by birthright or by working their way up through the ranks. “President” is Obama’s first real job. Sarkozy and Putin must laugh every time he leaves the room. Mrs. Thatcher would be hard pressed to find time for him. I imagine he feels right at home in Scandanavia. He’s trying to turn the United States into the equivalent of Denmark, after all.

“The press is so powerful in its image-making role that it can make a criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”– Malcolm X, Audubon Ballroom, December 13, 1964
