Democratic party abandoning Kendrick Meek in FL-SEN?

Looks that way:

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, who left the Republican Party to run for Senate as an independent, has hired a top Senate Democrat’s former chief of staff.

In a just-released statement, Crist announced that his media team will be headed by Josh Isay, who used to work for Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. Schumer is a member of the Senate’s Democratic leadership team and once headed the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

More details here (H/T: Hot Air).  The company is SKDKnickerbocker, and the anonymous Democrat who noted that this wouldn’t be happening without permission from the White House is quite correct: it wouldn’t be.  Naturally, this means abandoning Kendrick Meek (interesting fun fact: he supported Hillary Clinton in the primary), but that’s no obstacle for the Democratic party, particularly since Meek is African-American anyway and thus assumed safe to be imposed upon*.  Also naturally, you can assume that Crist will promise to caucus with the Democrats; even more naturally, you can assume that he’ll lie about that, too…

Mind you, all of this assumes that Crist can beat Marco Rubio.  Click on that link to make sure that doesn’t happen.

*Maybe they’ll offer Meek a job as a hypothetical Senator Crist’s Assistant Chief of Staff.  What, why not CoS?  Nah, they’ll save that position for somebody who’s a bit more melanin-deficient.

Heckuva job.

And how does that get Rubio elected?

Moe Lane (Diary) Saturday, June 5th at 9:48AM EST (link)

Seriously, what benefit is this statement to Marco?

It was a criticism.

NeoKong (Diary) Saturday, June 5th at 10:40AM EST (link)

The NRSC’s hand picked guy couldn’t beat Rubio in the primary.
So he jumps ship and screws over the GOP and all his donors.
He is so attractive to the DNC they abandon their own candidate and throw in with Crist.
The DNC likes Crist even more than Cornyn did.
The guy they now support was groomed for them by the GOP.
I think that is rather funny.

In other words, it doesn't actually help Rubio.

Your priorities in FL-SEN are duly noted.

Of course it's time to move past this now that...

RedBeard Saturday, June 5th at 12:14PM EST (link)

…the R establishment is no longer a factor in a primary contest. But it wasn’t long ago that most of us were voicing our discontent on this site in much the same way NeoKong is doing, so I fully understand.

We need to do two things here in Florida. Move past the NRSC fiasco to focus on getting Rubio elected, and at the same time quietly work behind the scenes to make sure a similar Crist/Greer/NRSC scenario never again surfaces.

Follow up by remembering that the purpose of the exercise is to improve the conservative/liberal ratio in Congress, not to feel warm and fuzzy at Republican reversals.

Finish by not getting huffy when people ding you for the first two.

Timidity has never been one of my problems, and sometimes things must be said, despite the dangers of doing so.

Moe, you are a good man, informed and on the right side of the issues. But can you save your dinging for trolls and liberals and other such creatures?
Also, the sarcasm in your 11:57 post rather nullifies your call for losing the sarcasm.

That hard edge of yours, particularly since you are someone in authority around here, can be over the top and a bit off-putting at times. Perhaps you don’t intend it to be so, but often times the perception becomes the reality. This is particularly true in a written forum, where a person’s voice, facial expressions, and body language cannot help to flesh out the full intent and meaning of a person’s words.

Dems will abandon Weak Meek and flock to a guy who’s just as liberal but who can win.

Both Sestak and Crist can run as anti-Obama types and still vote with him when they get in office. It is how Obama got elected, pretending to be something you are not.

You're Delerious If You Think That Will Work This Time

IJB Saturday, June 5th at 12:40PM EST (link)

Come September, everyone from Crist to Sestak to Carnahan to Fisher is going to have to answer one simple question – Are you a vote for Obama’s agenda?

Everyone of those people will ultimately have to answer “Yes” to that question (or, if they answer “No”, will have a zillion ads run showing that they are abject liars on the subject).

And once they do, they will lose. Period.

Agreed with you in my comment.

redneck_hippie (Diary) Saturday, June 5th at 12:53PM EST (link)

Crist is allied with Obama/Reid/Pelosi. And this will definitely stick to him. Any party switcher is automatically suspect, but this guy is trying to out-Specter, Specter. The more Crist lies about being an independent voice, the more people will be shown that he is worse than unreliable. He is a betrayer and a backstabber.

earlgrey, you may be right

but I think that a lot of people who left themselves wide open into being misled and/or deceived into voting for Obama in 2008 are in the process of developing a bit more wisdom on their choices this time around.

People don’t like getting played, especially by people they elect as leaders.

The Democrat Party AGAIN leaving a Black man to fend for himself without their support (remember New York?) and the fake tan WHITE man getting the Democrats support….now who is the RACIST PARTY? that’s right you know its the Democrats. They don’t give a crap about Blacks other then for their Plantation vote. They don’t treat them with respect they treat them as slaves to a Party that truly does NOT keep with their Conservative social ideals. They force gay marriage on them, they force abortions on them and they force dependency by keeping them from achieving the most that they can by FORCING them into substandard schools. It is SHOCKING that 95% of Black Americans are MINDLESS DRONES!

They supported the WHITE man over the natural Hawaiian candidate last month and they continue to support candidates of the pale kind in election after election and then turn to the Black Community and put on their minstrel show of caring about them. BTW I didn’t set the rules of USING race in elections they did and Alinsky would say use their OWN rules against them!

Can you imagine the screaming if the GOP tossed a black guy under the bus?

It is APPALLING that Americans of color continue to view the Republican Party as the party of RACISM when time after time and example after example is given of Democrats USING & ABUSING those Americans!

Jaded- It's because some important history

Scope (Diary) Saturday, June 5th at 1:10PM EST (link)

has been erased. IMO one of Beck’s best TV shows covered the history of Blacks in America, all the way back. He showed how many of them fought side by side with whites in the Civil War. He brought forth all of the Blacks that served as Judges, Congresspeople and Educators. The two guests he had on that show were fabulous. One was a Black professor at Washington and Lee I believe. When a Black man in the audience asked why they, and so many Blacks have never been taught this rich history, the Professor said in essence- The Democrats have always worked hard on making the Blacks victims, and have kept them down, by keeping them in a constant welfare state of mind. In that show it was also pointed out that the Democrats have always promoted the race card. They have stirred the pot of race envy, and have made a habit of pitting Blacks against Whites. The other guest answered the audience question- When was the history erased, and who started it? Woodrow Wilson.

Wonder what job Meeks is being offered?

michiganwolverine Saturday, June 5th at 10:22AM EST (link)

I don’t think the Obama administration would outwardly leave the only african american in the hanging race out to dry. But Meeks may be receiving phone calls to drop out of the race. It would be great if Meeks stuck it to them and refused to drop out. Better yet if he exposed the chicago style thuggary of the Obama administration. It would be hard to believe that this is not going on behind the scenes. Where are the other Florida Dems who should be out in support of Meeks?

Demorats have a history of dissing and abandoning Black candidates

honorable (Diary) Saturday, June 5th at 10:37AM EST (link)

There was the former Controller of NY whom Bill Clinton refused to help financially for his bid to the Gov. of NY. Then the current Governor of NY Petersen was asked not to run again by Obama.

Now Kendrick Meek is another casualty of Democratic racism and treating their Black candidates as plantation slaves.

Flipper was sich a nice name for a dolphin. But now its just a descriptive for Crist, He goes from rep, to indie to dem in less than two months. I don’t think people really view him running indie as a flip, but they can’t ignore it now. Not if our Republican leaders and Rubio hammer this home.

independent in name only. The hug is more than a hug now. Affection is mutual between Crist and Obama/Reid/Pelosi.

Let’s continue to get Marco the $ to remind voters who Crist backs and who backs Crist.

Wish there was some democrat out there who could opportunistically run against Crist as another Independent candidate and neuter the democrats’ hopes.

Does anyone from Florida

Scope (Diary) Saturday, June 5th at 1:29PM EST (link)

know anything about the interim Secretary of State Dawn Roberts? From what I’ve read, Kurt Browning, appointed by Crist resigned because of legislative age requirements, the day after Crist left the Republican Party. This is freightening.

Rubio is way ahead of Crist, and obviously will lose the primary. Crist, in order to not get trounced, switches to an Independent. The next day Crist appoints an interim SOS. I’m wondering if Crist didn’t make promises to Roberts, in exchange for promises from Roberts. In addition, the Crist appointed GOP leader gets arrested for fraud and money laundering.

It is comforting that every switcher like Specter and the D Rep that switched to an R is losing their races. They prove themselves to be unprincipled, and easily bought off. They can’t be trusted by either party.

If Dems force Meek from race

realskinny (Diary) Saturday, June 5th at 2:39PM EST (link)

it’s hard to believe Florida blacks will be happy and just say “yessa, yessa” and switch to Crist as directed. I have to believe enough of them will think for themselves and see that Rubio’s policies are better. If Rubio gets just 20% of the black vote he should win.

When do the ballots get printed?

acat (Diary) Saturday, June 5th at 3:02PM EST (link)

Remember the New Jersey shenanigans around Toricelli being replaced by Lautenberg a couple years ago? Dem internal politics all over that one…. but it still took the state legislature making an exception for ‘em to get the ballots changed.

If Kendrick Meeks appears on the ballot with a D next to his name, he will draw at least some of the vote – my guess is 12% – from the people who always vote Dem no matter what. Some of ‘em, especially in Florida, have been voting on autopilot for 20+ years now. Christ returning wouldn’t change it, Crist certainly can’t.

This leads us to Charlie’s other problem – there are plenty of Dems who, even if Meeks backs out, could demand that their names go next to the D on the ballot – possibly in court.

Crist’s only hope, though, is to get all Dems off the ballot, or run as a Dem himself.

While there’s enough time for this before the ballots get printed, it would likely take a vote in the state legislature to make it legal (i.e. to let the Dems run Charlie or nobody… ) and I’m not sure Orange Charlie has enough juice left to get this done.

We can be sure that Crist will do whatever

redneck_hippie (Diary) Saturday, June 5th at 3:16PM EST (link)

best suits the interests of Crist. He’d run as a Zoroastrian if it meant he would win. My main concern is if someone does appear on the ballot as a D. We all know that a D doesn’t vote outside of his tribe. The idjits would see an I and an R and if Mr. Magoo ran as a D, he’d get their votes. Lucky for us, there are a lot less of the D tribe lately.

Excellent

Sean (SIConservative) (Diary) Saturday, June 5th at 2:39PM EST (link)

This should destroy any pretense that Crist might caucus with the Republicans. It’s very difficult for me to see Meek dropping out. Assuming he stays in and gets just 15%, which would come almost exclusively from Crist, Rubio could conceivably win with 42.5% in what is essentially a 50/50 state.

Exactly - Crist Has *NO* Realistic Path To Victory

IJB Saturday, June 5th at 4:24PM EST (link)

Even if the Dems somehow strong-arm Meek into dropping out, I doubt this Jeff Greene guy will go willingly the same way, which means there *will* be a Dem candidate on the ballot.

And, if there is, the Dem candidate can be expected to get at least 10% of the vote (if it’s Meek, it’ll be more like 15-20%).

Meanwhile, Crist lining up with the DSCC will drive 80-90% of Republicans, and most Independents, solidly into Rubio’s camp.

Rubio’s *floor*, not his ceiling, is probably 40-45% of the vote.

Translation: There is pretty much no path to victory for Charlie Crist, and I’m shocked the DSCC can’t see that – by signing on with Crist, the DSCC is ending their chances in FL.
