Kill The Bill.

A triumphal progression for the Democratic party, this ain’t.

The scene above of Republican Congressmen recognizing the will of the Sovereign People of the United States absolutely infuriated Rep. Barney Frank, in that special blustering whiny way that he has. I get the impression that the poor fellow is somewhat unused to actual populism. And is also perhaps perturbed at the way that actual populism makes the ersatz kind that his party peddles look, well, chintzy…

Moe Lane

PS: Reconsider that vote, Rep. Frank. Because if you manage to push this debacle across the finish line tonight, you’ll be looking back fondly on this afternoon as being the last quiet, carefree day of the 111th Congress.

God ,” Bart, You had a chance to take a stand for millions of my most vulnerable children. Why did you abandon them in their hour of need?”

Stupak, ” Well Master, Pelosi was very adament, and Barack promised He had the power to do whatever He wanted with or without my vote. I knew I was going to get fired in November, and I really needed that money and cabinet post.”

God, ” I see. Well do you see that millstone over there? Take that and report to the lower chamber. I believe Barack and Nancy will be waiting to see you, for your new assignment. “

I am watching the debate...

cannedjam (Diary) Sunday, March 21st at 3:58PM EST (link)

and these personal accounts of people who are sick as an appeal to why this bill needs to be passed is getting ridiculous. Did anyone else hear the congresswoman from CA evoke a staff member who was diagnosed with cancer and who had health insurance but faced losing it when he turned 24, but then never actually lost his health insurance because he got a job working in congress which includes comprehensive health insurance?

Let me get this straight… let’s pass this bill because some kid got cancer, was fully insured under his parents, then got a job and continued his full range of insurance? Something must be done about this!

"Legislation was carried bleeding across the finish line"

mavericktime Sunday, March 21st at 4:03PM EST (link)

Did anyone see the column in the Washington Post today by Randy Barnett, a law professor at Georgetown?

This is an interesting quote:

“Ultimately, there are three ways to think about whether a law is constitutional: Does it conflict with what the Constitution says? Does it conflict with what the Supreme Court has said? Will five justices accept a particular argument? Although the first three of the potential constitutional challenges to health-care reform have a sound basis in the text of the Constitution, and no Supreme Court precedents clearly bar their success, the smart money says there won’t be five votes to thwart the popular will to enact comprehensive health insurance reform.

But what if five justices think the legislation was carried bleeding across the finish line on a party-line vote over widespread bipartisan opposition? What if control of one or both houses of Congress flips parties while lawsuits are pending? Then there might just be five votes against regulating inactivity by compelling citizens to enter into a contract with a private company. This legislation won’t go into effect tomorrow. In the interim, it is far more vulnerable than if some citizens had already started to rely upon its benefits.

If this sounds far-fetched, consider another recent case in which the smart money doubted there were five votes to intervene in a politicized controversy involving technical procedures. A case in which five justices may have perceived that long-established rules were being gamed for purely partisan advantage.

You might have heard of it: Bush v. Gore.”

look how close the resolution vote is...

What infuriated me

usedtobelib Sunday, March 21st at 4:13PM EST (link)

was Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat House Escorts leading her up the steps as if she were a monarch–huge gavel in hand.

I thought it absolute proof that Nan doesn’t even read the polls. If she did, she couldn’t possibly think that that video of her and her colleagues would be viewed as something that ought to happen in a democratic republic.

Obviously she knew that the escorts and the huge gavel would make for the picture that will be on the front page of all newspapers tomorrow and the fact she wanted to be front and center is just a reminder to Americans that this bill is about HER, not about US. They don’t even know when to be respectful. When upwards of 70% of Americans wanted the Dems to start over, when more than half the country is either infuriated or really unhappy with what you have just done, don’t throw yourself a parade.

She’s clueless if she thinks that picture will be welcomed. She seems especially unmindful that the next few days, weeks, and months will be about nothing but the new LAW , the new LAW and all its flaws. People are wary of new bills, but downright frightened by new LAWS. The GOP needs to pound on the IRS aspect of all this too.

The Repubs can really be the knights on a white horse riding to the rescue if they play this right. Keep Paul Ryan out there as the pleasant, yet firm wonky guy. I just wish we had a better spokesperson than Boehner. Bad voice, poor communicator–always saying “uh.” As if he isn’t bad enough aurally, there’s the visual problem of the viewer being transfixed by his “tan” and not being able to focus on what he is saying.
I’d like the younger members of the GOP to be front and center.

she doesn't give two s**** about the polls

cannedjam (Diary) Sunday, March 21st at 4:27PM EST (link)

She is elected from the most liberal district in America, her job is secure. She, and the President asked the entire democratic caucus to fall on a sward (willfully or otherwise). And even if she gets voted out, in her mind she goes down as a liberal hero who gets to fall back on her congressional pension, and the income of her family who she helped inflate using her congressional influence.

The rank and file dems who are now vulnerable had to chose between voting in line with their constituents but losing all their influence in the chamber (and funding from the party), or vote with the queen (and have the President of the United State owe them a solid) and take the chance of the people being upset 6 months from now. They chose to prolong their demise.

They found themselves in a lose lose and chose having the most powerful man in the world owe them something, as opposed to facing his scorn. That is how this all happened, it was all about threats and deals.

The only hope we have is that it dies as a result of the senate adding amendments – or some other procedural breakdown – or that when it passes 200,000,000 people feel the burden enough between now and November. If we can’t stack the deck in the next two years it is over, we will never be able to roll this back.

It shouldn't have come down to abortion

mavericktime Sunday, March 21st at 4:18PM EST (link)

This bill should have been killed on its whole premise. There must have been a better strategy that could have been used. This bill was extremely unpopular. Did people let up after Scott Brown won, and assume too much?

I truly hope that Lindsey Graham keeps his promise that if this bill goes through, Obama should not count on Republican cooperation for anything this year.

This year? What about last year?

AS TO FOX NEWS AND THEIR ARAB "PRINCE"

weatherford Sunday, March 21st at 4:31PM EST (link)

We have been giving the morons at FOX News a break because of the absolutely crucial work done by Beck in educating the People.

But at the finish line they are in the main ignorant of political skills and have been extraordinarily harmful over at least the last two weeks. Ailes seems to have a perverse interest in losing and has honed it to a fine art.

The objective is to overrun the enemy and continue the attack. It is NOT to napalm around the edges and never fix bayonets.

The lesson learned is simple. We can count on FOX News (not Beck) — when the hounds are unleashed — to tuck tail and run.

P.S.
At one point their “Vote Tally” had it at 214 NO to 218 YES. Interesting addition.

bit concerned about the Executive Order, we have to think that it had to be one of the first things that Nan and the Prez offered the Stupak 12, then the Stupak 6 (or whatever #) long, long ago, yet they held out until today.

Why? Why did they take today what must have been offered earlier?

Did they hold out for other reasons? Other Goodies?

Did the pressure simply get to them so they accepted what had been offered before, making it look as if this was a new concession to them while it was actually a very old one?

I’d love to know, for if this was offered long ago, Stupak held the nation on edge for no good reason and he should be held accountable on that issue alone.

Stupak - encore performance

As for Fox...

usedtobelib Sunday, March 21st at 5:12PM EST (link)

all O’Reilly has been out for this last year is an interview with Obama. O’Reilly is a guy who simply can’t stand the fact that the MSM doesn’t view him as a journalist. He has been alternately butt-licking and critical, manic in his back and forths on Obama. Sad to say, none of them, O’Reilly included is a journalist, not a practicing journalist, anyway.

Did you see Peggy Noonan’s latest column? She finally woke up, but way, way too late. Same can be said for all the other “Gee-I- don’t -want- to- seem critical-of-America’s- first African-American President” pundits. They all waited until this legislation was down the road before they wrote against it, for to conclude it was the worst piece of cut and paste sausage they had seen in a long time was, they feared, too critical of THE ONE.

The same thing occurred with the doctors of this country. In the last few days I have seen them interviewed all over the place, bemoaning this legislation. Where were they earlier when it would have mattered?

The same will happen with immigration if the GOP doesn’t adopt a more aggresssive stance, with language that works. They need to pay attention to Frank Luntz about the use of language.

You gotta stike first. If you don’t, you’d better be the master of the counter-punch.

Cannedjam,

usedtobelib Sunday, March 21st at 5:29PM EST (link)

I live next to Nan’s district to it. Feel for me. And please pray that Jerry Brown does not beat Meg Whitman for Guv. The GOP in CA is moribund, a result of really bad strategy over the last few decades.

Let it be a lesson to all: you have to get elected by winning on the issues that make you electable, then doing your thing.

The single payer

usedtobelib Sunday, March 21st at 5:43PM EST (link)

is right around the corner when all the docs and pharmacies refuse to accept the present Medicaid and Medicaid-like reimbursementsresulting from this new law –the plan all along as Beck has pointed out.

I referred earlier to a recent Peggy Noonan column which is finally critical of Obama, but she took her shot at Glen Beck, saying she ‘s pretty sure he is crazy, but the Crazy One has been right about everything substantive so far. I’d like to force her and her ilk to sit in his studio and do an interview with him. I guess someone like her doesn’t think he is “polite company.”

One other point to cannedjam about the choice the Dems had–those in the House who hated this bill (and I am convinced there were/are many) could have formed a strong coalition if there had been any leaders among them. As I pointed out before, the brightest, most responsible people don’t go into politics anymore. Shrewd people, yes, but not bright problem solvers who wish to serve. Empahsis on “serve.”

I wish Boehner were not in the position he’s in. He is simply not an effective communicator.
