I missed this when it came out last week, not that anybody was waiting for this with bated breath. Short version: eight for ten, and the Democrats made up a good bit of lost ground more or less across the board.
| Feb-10 | Jan-10 | ||||||
| Issue | Dem | GOP | Diff | Dem | GOP | Diff | Shift |
| Health Care | 42% | 45% | (3) | 37% | 49% | (12) | 9 |
| Education | 41% | 38% | 3 | 36% | 40% | (4) | 7 |
| Social Security | 39% | 42% | (3) | 35% | 45% | (10) | 7 |
| Abortion | 38% | 42% | (4) | 32% | 46% | (14) | 10 |
| Economy | 41% | 46% | (5) | 42% | 46% | (4) | (1) |
| Taxes | 37% | 48% | (11) | 34% | 50% | (16) | 5 |
| Iraq | 38% | 42% | (4) | 38% | 46% | (8) | 4 |
| Nat’l Security | 37% | 47% | (10) | 40% | 49% | (9) | (1) |
| Gov’t Ethics | 35% | 28% | 7 | 33% | 30% | 3 | 4 |
| Immigration | 34% | 39% | (5) | 36% | 43% | (7) | 2 |
Of course, how long that lasts remains to be seen. The Democrats are hoping that their proposed health care bill (which is already starting to get stuffed with even more extraneous material, of course) will allow them to get back into the good graces of the American people, should it pass. That is… hopeful; but hope is not a plan. Also, it’ll be interesting to see next month whether the Rangel/Massa/Ways & Means scandals (and brewing Pelosi one) were high-profile enough to overcome the default public bias favoring the Democrats on corruption. All part of the dance.

Spikes?
VizBiz (Diary) Friday, March 12th at 8:27AM EST (link)You know Moe, I have often wondered about these spikes. How is it that O’s numbers slowly fall and then suddenly rise!
How can that be? Is it that people are extremely fickle? I just don’t buy it. Most people, especially these days are on one side of the fence or the other. How easy is it to change ones mind if they don’t trust you?

What's with the big GOP drop?
daniocean Friday, March 12th at 9:00AM EST (link)Why GOP numbers are so low this month? Scandal after scandal, ramming bills, not listening to public opinion and Dem’s numbers go higher? Something is definitely not right here. I think that the false recovery we are experiencing lately is propping up their numbers… tho I don’t think it will last for long.
I think it is a reflection of a lack of trust for both parties.
penguin2 (Diary) Friday, March 12th at 9:25AM EST (link)Though it shows a shift to the Dems, the people don’t feel any more confident with our side; GOP incumbents need to pay attention. Anger and frustration can happen towards our party, because people will be upset that we are not fixing things, or “making things better.” Yes, we are out of power, but perception is everything. IMO, there will be some element of blame focused on the GOP for not having saved the people “from themselves.”

cwilson (Diary) Friday, March 12th at 9:28AM EST (link)Where was all the good news for the Dems last month, to explain these numbers? It was a litany of bad and worse for them — yet their numbers go up?
Where was the bad news for Republicans? Scott Brown wins Teddy’s seat in liberal bastion Massachusetts — so the R numbers go down? This doesn’t compute.

petrarch Friday, March 12th at 10:47AM EST (link)NOTHING has gone well for the Dems in the last month – and yet their numbers improve, not by 1s and 2s, but by 7, 9s, and 10?
– Rigged polling? seems unlikely
– MSM coverups? of course, but what’s new?
– People getting used to the “new normal” of total Democrat venality, corruption, and blatant unConstitutionality, and thus reverting to their customary party of choice? That’s my fear. What can we do about it? Don’t really know. Possibly we’ve passed the tipping point of a majority of voters being miseducated and indoctrinated by far-left public schools, in which case there really is no hope. I refuse to believe that, but then there must be some other explanation for this, and I can’t think of one.

They've made some of the "Party of No" and obstructionist meme
Achance (Diary) Friday, March 12th at 11:01AM EST (link)stick with casual news watchers and the generally uninvolved. In my scentific polling of the boys at the watering hole near my marina you’ll get a lot of stuff about how the Republicans are holding up the Congress and not allowing it to get its work done. I think that is always a good meme for the less informed; they think Congress should “work hard” and “get stuff done” and when the criticism is that they aren’t, they want to blame somebody. Right now, I think the Rs are taking some blame. It’s not true, but in politics a lie is as good as the truth if you can get someone to believe it.

You want to talk about Corruption petrarch?
redandbluestate Friday, March 12th at 11:08AM EST (link)You dont want to go there!!….Corruption and Republicans are almost synonymous. I guess you do not want me to star listing the corrup Republicans in this space. The truth is not pleasant and it hurts sometimes. This is why Republicans become hypocrites. They used reconciliation process several times in congress and now that Dems are about to us it for health care, all of a sudden the end of the world in here!!. That’s hypocrisy.
Difference is
Leopard1996 (Diary) Friday, March 12th at 11:20AM EST (link)That republicans and especially conservatives don’t sit there and defend to the bitter death those that even have a stink of corruption. Sen. Stevens comes to mind that the FBI and the AG just had to throw enough stink, and he got thrown under the bus, we didn’t go full bore and defend Trent Lott when he made his comment about Strom Thrumond and being president, no he got ran out on a rail almost immediately. It does seem that dems will defend to the bitter end their corruptness, I can think of “Refrigerator” Jefferson and Charley Rangel for starters.
Other difference, with regard to reconciliation. A bill was already passed and signed then it went to reconciliation to fix in those cases. This is a blatant avoidence of the legislative process because voters realized the false premises that they were given to give democrats a filibuster proof majority in the senate and an overwhelming majority in the house. Don’t blame republicans for your side’s inablilty to govern effectively.
“The accumluated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout, “Save Us!”….and I’ll look down and whisper, “No”…The Watchmen
Corruption? Please.
petrarch Friday, March 12th at 1:07PM EST (link)Are there corrupt Republicans? Sure there are. They should go to prison – and generally do.
Are there corrupt Dems? Sure there are. But they very rarely go to prison, because unlike Rs, their leadership and the media cover for them every step of the way. Charlie Rangel is stepping down from his chairmanship? Whoop-de-doo – he should be behind bars like any other tax cheat. Ditto Tim Geithner, Tom Daschle… need I go on?
The issue isn’t who is corrupt. It’s what happens to them.
@Achance – thanks for the explanation, that makes sense. Just goes to underscore the crappy job we conservatives have been doing at attacking underlying liberal memes – e.g. “Congress should be working hard Doing Stuff.” No, that’s exactly what we do NOT want them doing, the harder they work the more liberty we lose and taxes we pay. Which actually is an argument that ordinary people can understand, once it’s pointed out to them; it just rarely is.

I think its more likely
JHancock (Diary) Friday, March 12th at 10:27PM EST (link)that most people don’t care about Democrat scandals. They never claimed (exception for Stupack) to be the party of morality, but the party of “the ends justify the means”, “if it feels good, do it”, and “the good of the many outweighs the rights of the few”. In short they never really pretended to be moral people or a moral party, so no one really cares about the scandals as long as liberal “progress” is made.
In addition the economy is showing signs of life again (Look at page one of the WSJ on consumer debt)-lots of people don’t care about the tax-paid Democrat vacation, or occasional “tickle fight” if their stocks and bonds are posting decent returns
Polling depends on two things
Michael M. Keohane (Diary) Friday, March 12th at 11:01AM EST (link)the way the questions are worded and the order in which they are presented. also,, after getting the poll results, those results are “adjusted” to fit what the pollster conceives as the political composition of the voting public. Some polls are weighted to the left in that voting groups or blocks that support Democrats are given more weight than groups that tend to support Republicans. In any case, be sure to check out the pollster’s “track record’ for accuracy.
Do not classify the words or deeds of your opponents as being hatefull, malicious or criminal in nature if they can also be easily characterized as simple ignorance or gross stupidity. Anon.

laxconservative (Diary) Friday, March 12th at 11:03AM EST (link)It’s not going to be a linear slide. Was it a Bunning hit?
Kyle-MI (Diary) Friday, March 12th at 1:16PM EST (link)I agree with the general principle that Bunning was trying to make: why should we borrow more money to pay for unemployment benefits when we have already unspent borrowed money from the so-called stimulus. Unfortunately the MSM and the Democrats were able to spin it as those mean cruel Republicans denying money from the unemployed during tough economic times. Even worse, Bunning caved. When you cave you loose both your point and your political capital. You don’t block a politically risky bill unless you have a good plan, support from your fellow party politicians, and are willing to stick it out to the end.
This was not the only event that contributed to some of the shift (see Achance above) but in my opinion we took a short-term hit because of it.
Anyone tried putting together several months worth of numbers?
Finrod (Diary) Friday, March 12th at 1:47PM EST (link)It’s really hard to see anything with these numbers just looking at this month and last month– the up-and-down variance is just too much. The underlying numbers are probably as good as we can expect, Rasmussen is one of the more solid pollsters out there.
