*Moral* courage.

Surely they can at least manage *that*.

The time has come for somebody in the Democratic party to show moral courage.

Consider the situation.  Despite a seventy vote majority in the House of Representatives and a then-twenty majority in the Senate, the Democratic party was only able to barely pass health care legislation in both Houses of Congress; and the two versions that were passed do not agree with each other.  To get that far, Congressional Democrats made a series of ad hoc deals and temporary understandings, with no clear plan on how to reconcile them all; this, coupled with more or less every legislative and procedural trick on the books, have allowed them to get almost to their goal.  Unfortunately, they don’t actually know what their goal even is at this point, but they’re almost there.

But also at this point they are, to use a cliche, grinding metal.  The Democrats had made a choice last year to shut out the Republicans from any sort of meaningful discussion, interaction, or independent contribution in the process of health care legislation; and followed that with a healthy dose of attempting to demonizing the GOP when the GOP had the temerity to object.  As a result, the Republican party has adamantly refused to provide any sort of a fig leaf to this steadily more unpopular legislation, and has been punished for that behavior by the American public by being more and more favored to win back at least the House of Representatives.  Meanwhile, the House members who voted ‘no’ on the bill the first time are growing more and more terrified of voting ‘yes:’ and some of the ones who voted ‘yes’ are trying to decide whether or not doom is less likely if they switch their votes or not.  And every Democrat in Congress is aware that keeping their individual seats are considered to be less important than passing the bill.

If more of these people were familiar with military science, they’d possibly realize that they’re in the political equivalent of any competent general’s nightmare.  They’ve stalled in a charge because of heavy fire, and while they want to advance they can’t make themselves do it.  But they don’t want to retreat, either, because that’s how you lose battles.  The tragic bit is that stopping is of course the absolute worst thing that an army can do in that situation, especially after the first moment of shock; sometimes you should go forwards, and sometimes you should go backwards, but staying in one place only gets more of your people killed.  All of this may seem obvious, but people think funny in the middle of a battle.

As we’re seeing now.  The Democrats are telling themselves that they’ve spent too much time and clout to just quit; but they’re in no position to charge on through.  So they stay where they are, and public opinion remains in the tank, and every so often a Democratic legislator announces his or her retirement or resignation.  And this won’t change until somebody finally has the moral courage to say “This isn’t working” and organizes a retreat*.  It should be the President – he’s the one that got his party into this mess in the first place – but the same lack of leadership ability that Obama showed at the beginning of the health care debate will make him a poor candidate for bringing it to an end.  And House/Senate leadership is mostly dominated by the few Democrats who aren’t worried about losing their jobs in November.  They’re not likely to feel the urgency that they should.  And, of course, the rank-and-file largely don’t have the guts to go up against the leadership, given how the leadership has been punishing dissenters.

Which is why I wrote all of this out; if I thought that anybody would take this advice, I wouldn’t give it in the first place.

So do you think this is dead?

stigmo Wednesday, March 10th at 8:13AM EST (link)

Every time I start to think so, we get a no-to-yes flip.

It's definitely on life support

If it could pass the House today, they would be voting on it today. It will not pass today so they are stalling, hoping tomorrow will be the day that the 217th democrat (or whatever number it is that they need) steps gingerly over the line…if that happens you’ll see a mad rush to schedule a vote.

I dont think it will happen….but I’m not betting any money on it. The risks if we guess wrong are far too high.

The senate bill will not die in the house until...

vamoose Wednesday, March 10th at 9:16AM EST (link)

this congress adjourns. This parasite of a bill will not die until its host, the Pelosi/Reid congress, dies.
1) stop the bill now, and again in April, May, June, …
2) throw the Dems out in November.
Like a Mayflower van stealing the Colts from Baltimore in the middle of the night, Dems will wait until they think no one is looking and try to ram this through.

Your diary is on the “Member Diaries” list. It’s at the top right now, and barring any huge news or troll postings it will be on the list for some time.

We can see it. Stop spamming it on other threads.

Boren?

RichGoldMD (Diary) Wednesday, March 10th at 8:30AM EST (link)

Boren (D, OK-2) just interviewed on Fox states that we need to move on to jobs. We can reform healthcare in a bipartisan way by fixing pre-existing conditions, allowing insurance to be sold across state lines. He said now is not the time to raise taxes. We should be doing what is best for the American people, not what is best for the Democratic party. He will vote No.

He was already a no

You *are* talking about Democrats, so fuggedaboudid.

They chose to make this screwed up from day one. The only person who didn’t lock out the GOP from the get-go was Max Baucus, and he got tossed under the bus.

Then they learned it wasn’t as easy as they expected in the House when they relied on Democrats only for support of a bill Pelosi wrote in secret, kept out of committees, and suppressed most debate on. She ended up having to cave on abortion to get Stupak and others on board.

Then they learned it wasn’t as easy as expected in the Senate when they relied on Democrats only for support of a bill Reid wrote in secret, kept out of committees, and suppressed most debate on. He ended up having to cave on the public option to get Lieberman on board and then had to buy off Nelson and Landrieu to get them on board.

After taking this “go it alone” approach and then finding they couldn’t make it work out – particularly after Scott Brown replaced Kennedy Kirk – they had to ramp up the “it’s THEIR fault” rhetoric to try to shift blame from their own failed strategy. Then came a summit glorified photo op that backfired and they are now having to resort to breaking any and every rule and lying even more than usual to try to get this monstrosity passed.

And *now* you expect them to show *moral* courage? I don’t think so. That would mean admitting they were wrong for the past year and they will never ever do that.

But at least they can keep us posted on Rahm's progress in the Congressional Gym.

At least to prove to their constituents that they tried hard, if not to show their moral courage. They are trying hard. Very Hard. Almost down to their clothes.

Of all the Democrat nay votes the first time around, sad to say, all the votes with “moral courage” came from the Left.
Sad, sad, sad. We’re up to our hips in cravens.

If Gabriel visited any of those members at midnight, and stood at the end of their beds and threaten them with eternal damnation, once the initial scare was over, next day they’d try to get a restraining order.

Besides, I’ve had dibs on Gabriel for the longest time, asking him to drop in on Michael Steele.

The sense here is a bout 50/50 as to whether it was pass, or whether it will fail. We mostly agree this is the only vote that will matter.

So, it seems we need to be planning now about next steps, because I think it passes…just as you said, because there is no moral courage and honor on that side of the aisle.

Courage

rsjt Wednesday, March 10th at 8:56AM EST (link)

There may be no dems in the house with courage but surely enough of them have a desire to survive politically. So, I won’t be talking about “next steps” while we are this close to winning. Excuse me while I call my congressman again.

Hoping to find ethics and morals inside the Democratic party is like hoping to find nuns hanging from brass poles at a strip club...Good luck

archer52 Wednesday, March 10th at 8:54AM EST (link)

Here’s the problem. Some of the dems have no morals, they are thieves and liars and thugs. Others have them, but manage to separate them from government. Still others may have them but for a price can stuff those same morals in a drawer out of sight.

The last group of democrats (like Stupak) reminds me of that old joke about an obnoxious man trying to hit on a young woman. She continuously rebuffs him. Finally he cuts to the chase. “Would you sleep with me for a million dollars?” The woman hesitates and finally says “Yes.” Then the man asks “Will you sleep with me for twenty dollars?” The woman is outraged, “What do you think I am a prostitute?”

The man replies, “We’ve established that. Now we are just haggling over the price.”

Politics is a dirty game that can only be played by those who like to get dirty. The few good guys, like Mike Pence and Paul Ryan, will eventually get muddied up too, either that or they will leave in disgust.

Trust me when I tell you seeing this happen is like smelling rain on the wind before a storm. You can sense it coming and there is nothing you can do about it. Hoping for “morals” in the Democratic party is like wearing a raincoat make of cheesecloth. It won’t work and it makes you look silly.

The push to turn us into a European statist government with a strong “El Presidente for life” type of leader will never stop. Humans are humans and there will always be those who desire to rule others and those who are willing to be ruled.

I predicted this, and eventually it can end only one way. Read the book- www.revoltthebook.com

Vote scheduled for 3/18

stigmo Wednesday, March 10th at 10:06AM EST (link)

The vote has been scheduled for 3/18.

http://www.lifenews.com/nat6071.html

We’ve been saying for awhile we’d know they had the votes when a date was on the calendar. Gibbs says he thinks they have the votes now…

Before everyone goes all apoplectic, that story is from March 4

eburke (Diary) Wednesday, March 10th at 10:22AM EST (link)

and Robert Gibbs doesn’t get to set Congressional votes.

Hoyer just said again this morning that the deadline will likely slip and Stupak has made comments in the last 24 hours which indicate that he understands that the whole ‘reconciliation’ gambit to resolve the abortion language is what it is – which is a giant head feint and shell game.

Still no vote scheduled in the House.

My bad

stigmo Wednesday, March 10th at 10:34AM EST (link)

Got it in my email this morning so I assumed it was new…Sorry for the paranoia…I know I’ve been spreading more than my share around here lately.

Understood. It's been a trying, stressful 15 months;

eburke (Diary) Wednesday, March 10th at 10:50AM EST (link)

this thing is like a hydra. No matter how many heads you think you’ve chopped off, there always seems to be 2 more to take its place.

November can’t come soon enuf.

“All that need be done for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”

Unified Patriots

eburke- It seems like a Hydra because you are seeing their "Tet" offensive

archer52 Wednesday, March 10th at 11:01AM EST (link)

The goal of Tet was not to win the war, it was to break the spirit of the people supporting the war. The democrats are going all out because they rightly understand this is their day. Their moment. They can do more harm and move quicker to their ultimate goal in one stroke of a pen then they have in the last twenty years. I don’t like them for it, but I understand and respect their drive. It is like trying to defend against Peyton Manning when half of your own defense thinks the Colts scoring is a good thing.

All we can do is hit hard and hit low hoping to take out one of the other team’s players. Remember, in this game winning IS everything.

The "Tet" analogy is an excellent one, archer.

And just as in ’68, we have a compliant media willing to spin every defeat as a victory.

Made me think of one of my all-time favorite poems…
They are attempting to do or die and mostly dying.

Half a league, half a league,
? Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
? Rode the six hundred.
‘Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns’ he said:
Into the valley of Death
? Rode the six hundred.

‘Forward, the Light Brigade!’
Was there a man dismay’d?
Not tho’ the soldiers knew
? Some one had blunder’d:
Their’s not to make reply,
Their’s not to reason why,
Their’s but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
? Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
? Volley’d and thunder’d;
Storm’d at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
? Rode the six hundred.

Flash’d all their sabres bare,
Flash’d as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army while
? All the world wonder’d:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro’ the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reel’d from the sabre-stroke
Shatter’d and sunder’d.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
? Volley’d and thunder’d;
Storm’d at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro’ the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
? Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
? All the world wonder’d.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
? Noble six hundred!
