Again. This time, he’s trying to revise and extend his plans on space policy:
President Barack Obama will outline his administration’s vision for space agency NASA and an eventual trip to Mars during a conference in Florida in April, the White House said on Sunday.
Obama has had to defend his commitment to the space agency in the politically important U.S. state after submitting a budget to Congress that would cancel a program to return U.S. astronauts to the moon.
Glenn Reynolds thinks that the White House wasn’t expecting a pushback; but really, why should they have been? All the President did was break his campaign promise and kill twenty-three thousand jobs in a Congressional District whose Congresswoman had the temerity to vote against the health care bill – which said bill is, of course, infinitely more important to the Democrats than manned space exploration. There are so many other campaign promises that the President has broken; why should this one be treated any differently?

PS: Tom Garcia is running in FL-24 as a Republican, and he’s pretty mad about the space thing himself. He’d also love to hear from you.

NASA will be mandated to 'green tech' only.
Kenny Solomon (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 8:36AM EST (link)The only currently planned NASA project to be funded is ‘The Space-Based Wind-Generated Electricity Using Wireless Transmission To Earth-Based Ultra-High-Voltage Fiber-Optic, Single-Strand Networks.
The new-tech engineering system is named Ballistic Undulating Reciprocating Power, or B.U.R.P.
In the event of space-based system failure, an Earth-based back-up is in the works.
That system is called Fail-safe Access Reciprocating Transmission, or……..

Hope and Change working for Florida.
antisocial (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 9:12AM EST (link)This may sound cruel but I personally am not bothered. Florida voted for Mr. Hopey. I can only hope that “Hope and Change” is working out nicely for them.
BTW… did you notice effective and affordable
It said the investment in new technology would “help us travel from the Earth’s cradle to our nearby Solar System neighborhood in a more effective and affordable way, thus laying the foundation to support journeys to the Moon, asteroids, and eventually to Mars.”

RedBeard Monday, March 8th at 9:50AM EST (link)Nearly half of Floridians voted against Obama. We count, I think, and shouldn’t be condemned along with the idiots who voted for Obama.
By the way, the heavy Obama vote was in southeast Florida, where the New York carpetbaggers live in massive numbers. Blame New York for raising them wrong.
And of course Obama took the two counties where Florida and Florida State are located; thanks there go to the burned out hippies who now run the education industry nationwide.

cwilson (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 1:44PM EST (link)Yeah, Brevard County stands to lose almost all of those 23,000 jobs — and it routinely votes 60%+ Republican (even in the wave year of 2008, with that putz of an R candidate, it still went 55%-45% McCain).
Which, come to think of it, is probably the real explanation for Teh Won’s policy here. But don’t blame US for West Palm, Dade, Broward, Orange, Leon, and Gilchrist, K?

Thanks, I was about to say that.
INC (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 2:09PM EST (link)We used to live in Brevard County. It’s a conservative county. 23,000 job loss will decimate business.
A large part of private enterprise there are companies like Harris, Northrop Grumman and some others who work on contracts with the Federal government. The rest of the county is support services (doctors, etc.). Many locally owned independent retail businesses have shut down is the last couple of years.
Brevard does have retirees. It is also home to Patrick Air Force Base, and there are military retirees who locate in the area.

The people are screaming they want jobs!
When they went to Marie Antoinette and told her the people had no bread to eat, she tartly replied “Then, Let them eat cake!”
This is THE OBAMBI’s ‘Let them eat cake moment!’
You know what happened to Marie’s and her husband’s Louis’s heads?
Human Space Flight is too important
Warrior (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 2:40PM EST (link)to be left in the hands of this cigarette sucking, politically expedience, messianic man-child who has never had an aspiration which the gubmint failed to fullfill for him. We cannot surrender lower earth orbit to the Chinese. Period.
And it’s not just Brevard Co, either. It’s jobs in AL and TX and CA and many other places. Normally, I wouldn’t be touting gubmint jobs since they only take from the private economy. However, in this case, it would behoove us as a country to invest in technicians, engineers, rocket scientists and so forth. Most of these people are not going to the private sector anyway. Space exploration and development conducted solely by private enterprise is decades away, as is routine travel to Mars.
No, this neophyte to space exploration and private jobs needs to take our word for it — we don’t EVER want to be left holding the no-space-capability bag. Not at any cost.
