Massa to resign Monday.

Although I’d like to note one thing, here:

Rep. Eric Massa (D-NY) will resign Monday at 5pm, a source close to the embattled incumbent tells Hotline OnCall.

Massa has been pressured by House Dems to step aside amid an ethics controversy that caused him to announce earlier this week he would not run for a second term.

Earlier this week, the House ethics committee confirmed it was looking in to allegations against Massa. Those allegations reportedly include sexual harassment of a member of the Congressman’s staff.

Massa’s decision to retire came as a surprise to both parties. While he said his decision was based on a recurrence of cancer, the ethics committee investigation made Dems push him out the door.

Not to be pedantic about this, but Massa has not actually claimed that his cancer has returned.  I welcome any link where he specifically says that it has (and not, say, a cancer ‘scare’).

One less yes vote

RealQuiet (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 4:11PM EST (link)

Though the amount of votes drops to 216 now so in essence it is a wash. Massa voted no the first time but was sure to vote yea this time.

Agree, RealQuiet.

His “no” vote last time was posturing. He’s a quasi-socialist; anything that moves us closer to government-run health care would have Massa’s support.
He would have supported whatever monstrosity comes out of Congress this month.

Today, there is a name for the political doctrine that rejoices in scarcity of everything except government. The name is environmentalism.

Wasn't he a first rate Benedict Arnold?

RealQuiet (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 4:27PM EST (link)

Wasn’t he initially elected as a Republican and then switched parties?

No

redtillimdead (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 10:18PM EST (link)

He ran as a Democrat in 2006 and 2008, beating a Republican incumbent in 2008, after falling a few thousand votes short in 2006. Never elected to congress as a Republican.

we all know what the problem is here

streiff (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 4:15PM EST (link)

at a minimum he has a Mark Foley problem. More than likely he has a Jim McGreevey problem. If even part of the stories circulating about his actions while a Navy officer are true, the man is a sexual predator.

for a long time.

Not surprised at what happened. Fits in with his past, although the stuff I heard was second hand. He got into the spotlight when he was Wesley Clark’s military aide. Clark helped find funding for his run for Congress.

What Massa said was . . .

bigalsouth (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 5:41PM EST (link)

“There is no doubt in my mind that I did in fact, use language in the privacy of my own home and in my inner office that, after 24 years in the Navy, might make a Chief Petty Officer feel uncomfortable,” Massa said when he admitted asking men under his command “Hi Sailor! New in Town???”

Are you sure it doesn't drip to 251?

VizBiz (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 4:17PM EST (link)

My head is spinning with the count. Seems to change everyday.

Runs with scissors, walks with Wacom.

Oops drip suppose to be drop

VizBiz (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 4:19PM EST (link)

But I guess either works

Runs with scissors, walks with Wacom.

Notice that the dripping is gaining momentum

RealQuiet (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 4:26PM EST (link)

that will likely culminate in a tidal wave crashing on Democrats in November. Now that is a pretty visual :)

I'm Glad You're Not The Only One That Noticed That, Moe

But all these articles kept referring to a cancer “scare”, not a much more definitive case of cancer “recurrence”.

Reading between the lines, the “cancer scare” line is total bull, and he’s resigning because it’s about to *hit the fan*.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but if he resigns now, won’t this require a Special Election to fill?

If so, it’ll be the most significant Special of the year – if the GOP doesn’t take it back in the current environment, then “the GOP is sure to take back the House” idea will have to be reevaluated…

it does

proudgop (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 7:07PM EST (link)

and ethically challenged Paterson will have within 40 days of him resigning to get a special election day that us New York tax payer have to pay for

The Republicans better win this seat

Current Candidate is Corning Mayor Tom Reed (R). Reed’s fundraising has been weak he raised just $87K in the 4th quarter and spent $81K, reporting just $122K in the bank.

Monroe Co. Exec. Maggie Brooks (R), state Assemb. Min. Leader Brian Kolb and state Sen. Catharine Young (R), Fmr Congressman Kuhl are all possible names

Don't Worry

Don't Tase Me Bro Friday, March 5th at 10:04PM EST (link)

I’m sure the New York GOP will go out of its way to pick the absolute worst candidate they can and blow the election just like they did in NY-20 and NY-23.

Maybe not

redtillimdead (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 10:21PM EST (link)

Tom Reed is a good candidate. Today, 8 of the 9 (I think) county chairs that pick the nominee endorsed him. The only one that didn’t is the chair in Monroe County, and he is waiting for Maggie Brooks to make her decision. She endorsed Reed when he announced his run this summer. As long as they don’t pick an assemblyman or senator, its good. The Dems are looking at a few state assemblymen and one mayor. Hopefully they pick an assemblyman.

Too Machiavellian?

toothpick (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 5:27PM EST (link)

Is it too Machiavellian to pose the following possibility? To wit: the powers-that-be knew Massa’s vote on health care was going to be contrary to their desires, so they created a situation to force him out?

Maybe he turned down the job as SecNav and this is the alternative way to push him aside?

Just speculating…

Politico doesn't seem to think it is cancer either.

this

According to another officer on the ship, Massa and a lieutenant were on liberty in the Middle East. Massa had made the motel arrangements and the room turned out to have only one bed. The lieutenant reportedly told other officers on the ship that while they were in the room, Massa came up behind him and started massaging his neck and shoulders.

The lieutenant, shocked by this conduct from a higher-ranking officer, shrugged it off, literally.

In the night, he later told shipmates, he was awakened by Massa’s hands in his shorts. The lieutenant was startled and turned away. Massa rolled over and pretended to be asleep.

Since when did promiscuity matter to the Dems?

I find it strange that the Democrat party who will not kick Barney Frank or any other member under the bus for sexual indiscretions is willing to do so to Massa. There must be a reason they really don’t like this guy.

Could it be he is willing to stand up to Obama’s and one of his pet projects, the wind industry.
