How nice of the White House to tell us how long they can hold out.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs is ratcheting up the pressure on Congress to complete health-care legislation, setting March 18 as the deadline by which a final bill should be passed.
[snip]
The White House deadline means Congress would have exactly two weeks to pass a version of the existing Senate-approved bill in the House of Representatives and then pass a second bill filled with “fixes” in both chambers.
Two weeks. Fourteen days. Three hundred and thirty-six hours. When we run out the clock, the White House will either have to embarrassingly declare that the health care discussion is over for now; or even more embarrassingly admit that they were irrelevant to the health care discussion in the first place. Either way, the longer this is delayed, the more (justifiably) scared and anxious wavering Democrats get. Already they’re unsure of how much support they’re going to get from the administration on this; and now that it’s been made clear that there’s a firm timetable for withdrawal in place, that’s only going to make the precariousness of their positions even more clear*.
So… we run out the clock. For the good of the country, and by the will of its people.

The Deadline Has Significance: Easter Recess and Townhalls
Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 4:43PM EST (link)A week after that deadline is Easter recess. The Dems are laying low and not talk about town halls because they are trying not to have them and the leadership desperately wants a vote before their charges go home.
Its August all over again. But they are not going to acknowledge that. But it is the cause of their new sense of urgency. Keeping the Dems isolated in the echo chamber and under the pressure of Rahm, Reid, Pelosi, Obama,… is critical for them to maintain their ranks. They go home and it collapses all over again.
If conservatives were s,art, they pull every stop to get to Easter recess and the base should organize town halls for the Blue Dogs. Their should “mock” Town Halls all across American if the Dems hide from the public.
3/29 to 4/11 = Town Hall Time

Its also Tax Time and that will give tax and spend arguments a lot of wind.

Since when does a deadline mean anything to this group?
mustango (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 7:12PM EST (link)I get the point of the post (as other commenters have already noted), but honestly, haven’t we reached the point where none of the congresspersons supposedly being “pressured”, much less any of us, should be taking any this administration’s “deadlines” seriously?
The only thing we’ll hear about on March 19th is the next meaningless deadline. The only true deadline for this is January 3, 2011.

bk (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 8:11PM EST (link)Isn’t that favoring Christianity over other religions? Won’t that cause Muslims to hate us? Where’s Barry Lynn on TV griping about this?
And besides, if people are dying every day due to lack of health insurance like the Dems claim, why aren’t they meeting around the clock?

Cargosquid (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 8:40AM EST (link)"Dems Race to Pass Health Care Bill as Tea Partiers Plan Town Hall Wave"
LaborUnionReport (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 8:59PM EST (link)This is from Fox News (link below) and is actually quite funny when you stop and think about it:
Democrats are racing the clock to pass health care reform ahead of a wave of Tea Party-driven town hall meetings planned for the spring recess — the kind of gatherings that nearly derailed the package last August.
Democrats are racing the clock to pass health care reform ahead of a wave of Tea Party-driven town hall meetings planned for the spring recess — the kind of gatherings that nearly derailed the package last August.
But there’s a big difference this time around. Last summer, Democrats were encouraged to hold the town hall meetings, and they were blindsided by the backlash, which was recorded and promoted in countless YouTube clips. This time around, they have a good idea of what’s coming — and they’re lying low, in case work on health care carries over into the recess.
“There’s not been the same push as there was in August to encourage members to do town halls,” said Stephanie Lundberg, spokeswoman for House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.
But that isn’t stopping Tea Party groups, as well as former House Republican Leader Dick Armey’s outfit, FreedomWorks, from holding their own meetings and trying to coax lawmakers into attending.
“We’re about to ratchet it up,” said Debbie Dooley, a Tea Party Patriots organizer and FreedomWorks volunteer outside Atlanta. “You’re about to see the passion that we saw during the August recess.”
“We’re gonna hit ‘em when we know they’re back in (the) district, and we’re gonna hit ‘em hard,” said Tom Gaitens, a Tampa Tea Party organizer who coordinates with FreedomWorks.
But the town hall organizers are banking on the debate dragging out through the break. They’re going to invite representatives and senators to the town hall meetings, and they hope local press outlets will help them shame lawmakers who don’t show up.
“If they refuse to attend the town hall meetings, we’re going to have an empty chair with their name on it,” Dooley said. “If they choose not to face their constituents, that’s their decision. I’m sure their constituents will remember that.”

Quick Question
zachv (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 10:17PM EST (link)What stops Obama from signing the Senate Health Care bill into law if the House passes it?
All I’ve heard is the banging on about “pass[ing] a second bill filled with “fixes” in both chambers,” and nothing about the House passing the same text legislation as the Senate did. Does that not constitute as a law passing both chambers of Congress, that which the President can sign?
Yes
Adjoran (Diary) Friday, March 5th at 4:12AM EST (link)It does. And he will.
The fight is in the House, period.
