Texas and New Jersey: perfect together.

No, really.

The New Ledger sat down with Governor Rick Perry a few weeks ago, and in the course of talking about Perry’s success (and his working principles of governing) came this exchange:

TNL: …do you think Republicans will win if they embrace that sort of approach in other states with all their challenges? And what does that look like?

Perry:
Well, look at a state like Virginia, where Bob [McDonnell] just won by doing something very similar. He said we’re going to stop spending irresponsibly, we’re going to cut taxes, we’re going to encourage and enable those who risk their capital — job creators — and having what I would describe as a progressive energy policy, where he’s going to drill offshore in a way that’s environmentally sensitive and happens to be supported by his two Democratic senators.

That’s all pretty simple. These are not complex things — they’re challenging, but they’re straightforward. It’s not about understanding what you need to do as much as it is about having the courage to do it.

You look at a state like California. There are going to be some really tough decisions that have to be made to save that state. If Jerry Brown gets up and says “I’ve figured out a way to make this less painful,” well, here, smoke this — because at the end of the day, it’s going to be painful. Because that’s a state that has for too long made the easy decisions instead of the hard decisions.

If you are a state that has just said yes all the time to everything, there is a comeuppance, a day of reckoning for you. It’s right now.

It’s ‘right now’ in New Jersey, too.

N.J. Transit to Cut Jobs, Salaries Amid Deficit

New Jersey Transit, the third- busiest U.S. commuter-rail service, will cut 200 jobs, reduce executive salaries by 5 percent and trim contributions into employees’ 401k retirement plans by one-third to help close a $300 million budget deficit.

The firings of both unionized and non-union employees will total about 2 percent of the workforce, the biggest one-year reduction in agency history, Executive Director James Weinstein said today in a statement. Plans to raise fares and cut service will be disclosed next week, he said.

Also:

N.J.’s Christie Calls for ‘Shared Sacrifice’ in Cuts

Christie, speaking today at the first meeting of his Council of Economic Advisers at Princeton University, said public employees received raises of 4 percent to 5 percent, free or low-cost health insurance and higher pensions as the private sector was contracting, cutting pay and salaries.

[snip]

Christie has warned the state’s almost 600 school districts to plan for 15 percent budget cuts and said municipalities and social services may face similar reductions.

The governor has called for changing state public-union arbitration laws to give governments more leverage in negotiations.

And:

Governor Christie: “Time to Hold Hands and Jump Off the Cliff” – Chris Christie For President?

…You know, at some point there has to be parity. There has to be parity between what is happening in the real world, and what is happening in the public sector world. The money does not grow on trees outside this building or outside your municipal building. It comes from the hard working people of our communities who are suffering and are hurting right now.

I heard someone in the legislature say two days ago that they wanted no fare hike in New Jersey Transit, no cuts in service, and no cuts in subsidy. And I was thinking to myself, man I should have made this guy treasurer. [Laughter] Because if you can pull that one off, you’re obviously magic.

This is the type of awful political rhetoric that people sent me to this city to stop.

I would love to be able to do that, but I can’t. I would love to tell you that municipal aid will stay level, but it’s not. And it’s not because we don’t have the money. So you need to prepare. You need to prepare for what’s coming down the line because we have no choice but to do these things.

The video of the full speech is here, and ladies and gentlemen: you will not find it dull. All in all, there are very real, very painful, and very responsible fiscal decisions being made in New Jersey right now. And how are the voters reacting to that?

Poll finds N.J. majority backs work of Gov. Chris Christie

A Fairleigh Dickinson-PublicMind poll released today shows 52 percent of the respondents support the governor’s policies.

Republicans approve by a ratio of 10-to-one. Thirty-eight percent of Democrats approve and 33 percent disapprove. Independent voters approve of the governor 43 to 17 percent.

New Jersey isn’t purple, ladies and gentlemen. It’s blue. And yet, registered voters in NJ are receptive to this governor’s program.  Keep that in mind.

Moe Lane

PS: If Chris Christie pulls this off he won’t be able to run to President: New Jersey Republicans will guard the border with sticks in order to keep that from happening.  Yes, indeed, much like they do in Louisiana.

Speaking as a 10-year resident of NJ, quite possibly the most corrupt State in the Union (yes, even above Illinois)…AND as a 13 year vetean of Texas residency, I have gotten some relief from the actions our new Governor (for which I proudly voted) has taken thus far (and the trouncing of KBH and Medina in Texas yesterday).

It comes as a bitter sweet moment though. Governor Christie also elmiinated some State business grants last month, one week before the submission that I and a pharmaceutical partner were aiming to submit a proposal, and use to start some new tech research with.

I only hope that his cuts are slightly more surgical. I’ll be writing a letter to him asking that he does what he can to re-ignite the potential of New Jersey as the place for huge industrial Rennaissence. New Jersey certainly has the will and the talent for it, and people here are hungry, desperately hungry to work and build their own business empires. I know. I’m one among many of them.

I lived there for 25 years, left, and never looked back. That was almost 15 years ago, and the taxes and traffic were horrendous then.

When friends or relatives visited us here in VA, more than once there were comments that they felt like they had gone back at least 10 years in time. Can you imagine not having street lights on the roadways when you leave the city, we were driving 20-30 miles one way to our jobs, and, we didn’t have grocery stores every few miles. And, oh my goodness, you have wells and septics, and, you really drink that water without flouride. Yes, if Christie ever dreamed of cutting any of those modern conveniences that some New Jerseyans “expect”, he will not be so very popular. Then again, all those guests were die hard Progressives, and some state government union workers.

I applaud Christie for his leadership, and guts to do what needs to be done to save the state from bankruptcy. While VA is not in as bad a deficit, our new governor McDonnell is slashing the budget, and state expenses as well. He is getting rid of unnecessary or duplicate government agencies, and the workers in those agencies. He has cut school budgets across the state. It is up to the local school boards where they make their cuts, and here locally some teachers are going. That takes guts and leadership also. Of course the teachers are now buying TV and radio ads, and saying that the children are being punished. It’s always about the children, even when in high and juinor high schools, they can’t read at 4th grade levels.

Yes Moe, it’s a new sunny day for New Jersey.

Therefore, if you don’t buy into the scam of it’s for the children, you are a cold heartless bad character, which = those evil Republicans.

maddog (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 12:18PM EST (link)

It’s nice to hear the insights of fellow NJ exiles. Like you Scope, I spent 22 years in NJ, left 18 years ago, and never looked back. My family is no longer there. All but one of my friends moved south or west. Now I just pass through NJ once in a while. I am reminded why i left.

My property taxes in Fairfax County are lower than those in NJ, income taxes, lower, gas taxes, auto insurance rates lower

The only think higher in VA is the speed limit. Thank you Gov McDonnell for raising it to 70. It took NJ 12 years after the initial increase to 65 MPH. NJ was one of the last states clinging on to 55. The one thing I approved of Corzine was self-serve gas. That’s it.

Perhaps NJ can annex NY?

Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 10:28AM EST (link)

after all, pretty soon we won’t have a governor again. The timing is perfect.

I actually think it would work pretty smoothly. Since the voters here are intent on voting for Democrats, irrespective of the consequences I would use the “danger to self or others” as a way to involuntarily commit these folks while we complete the process of incorporating NY into NJ.

I am betting we can actually make this a rare bipartisan effort. Empirical evidence in my county shows that county government is growing under Republican stewardship despite the economy and confiscatory tax levels, which are going up again. Perhaps this liberalism is contagious? The next big epidemic? Perhaps we can get some DHHS funding then.

libertyshrugged (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 10:37AM EST (link)

There is tremendous waste going on in the Port Authority of NYNJ. Neither New York nor New Jersey benefit much with this corrupt organization who seem incapable of:

- Rebuilding the WTC
- Expanding PATH service
- Allowing for infrastructure expansion to deal with a future recovery

The PA needs to be broken up and privatized before that area truly can grow again.

NJ Has Too Many Layers of Govt

maddog (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 12:24PM EST (link)

One problem with NJ is too many local governments. They have all thsese townships, boroughs, towns, cities, etc layered undeneath counties. That adds a lot of layers and inefficiencies.

Too bad northern states do not have County based government like we do in the South. Morris County, NJ has 30+ municipalities, with over 30 Mayors, 30 town councils, 30 school board chiefs each making $100,000 salary+bens, with over 30 police chiefs each making $100,000, over 30 fire chiefs each making $100,000, 30 libraries to maintain. That’s just Morris County,1 of 21 counties in NJ. Recall there also is a Morris County layer of government with a Morris County Sheriff, Morris County Jail, Morris County Library in Hanover, Board of Freeholders, also represnting the people, etc. Fairfax County? Just one school board covering a county of 1 million, a purchasing power to match and arguably one of best systems in the entire country. No Reston, VA Police Department, no RFD, just Fairfax County Fire department. One county. One government, not 30-40.

I don't mean to poke a beehive ...

I fully support federalism

maddog (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 8:29AM EST (link)

That’s a fair question Joshua and I’m glad you asked. It’ll allow me to clarify.

Like most people here on his site, I am a strong supporter of federalism. I believe the Federal government is too big and spends too much. For decades the Federal Government has encroached an areas typically reserved for states.

This loss of federalism had contributed to some of our great nation’s problems. Some say the Federal Government is broken. I say it was never intended to do all the things it does now. Broken implies it used to work right and clearly this is not the right way things should work in the first place, constitutionally speaking.

One of the many things I liked about Chief Justice Request was his support for the 10th amendment. He was the lone voice at a dark time.

States can and should be laboratories of policy. If Californians and New Yorkers want to bankrupt themselves so be it. Just stay out of my state so I am not forced to live with the consequences of their poor decisions. People vote with their feet and demographics patterns of the past several decades prove it. That’s why liberals hate Federalism- precisely because they know people are voting with their feet. They cannot compete in the market place of ideas so they go the coercive Federal route.

Taking this a bit deeper, I’d prefer powers delved and further, say to counties. Gov Christie and McDonnell look to be really great Governors, but I have no illusions that the Democrats that control the both states Senates will comply.

What I don’t like is duplicative government. Why have counties and townships. One or the other, but not both. In NJ, they have double of everything as I listed above. Virginia also has cities and towns in addition to counties, but it is not duplicative. Roads for example. In Virginia counties, the state (via VDOT) plow and maintain all local roads. In towns such as Herndon or Vienna, they handle it, but not the state or the county. Fairfax County police do not patrol Herndon town. The two are separate- not overlapping.

New Jersey has 21 counties, 566 municipalities and 616 school districts, and property taxes average $6,800 per homeowner, or twice the national average. For example, Chester Township and Chester Borough. Borough is tiny and completely surrounded by Township like a doughnut hole. Chester Borough has approximately 1,600 residents and is barely is 1.5 square miles (compared to 481 sq miles of Morris County, NJ and 407 for Fairfax County, VA). Chester Township has less than 7,000 residents and is 29 sq. miles. The two municipal buildings are literally 2 miles from each other. Even the Federal Government recognizes on some small level the waste by having them share one post office generically called Chester 07930 and not having township or borough in the name. Do the needs of these two very small and very similar places (demographicly, socio-economic, density, etc) diverge that much that it warrants a completely parallel government? Plus, there is a county layered on top of this that also has similar institutions as those of the borough and township.

I’m not advocating for more government. In fact, I’m advocating for less government (do away with some as they are redundent) and gain more efficiency in the process.

I'm with you maddog, being for federalism is not synonimous wasteful, redundant local government

Michael Dugas (Diary) Thursday, March 4th at 7:43PM EST (link)

Just because one wants less federal intrusion or less government interference in ones personal affairs or state affairs does not mean one is for an over abundance of local governance.
