Barbara Boxer (D, CA) to get primary challenger: Mickey Kaus.

Seriously.

Pioneering political blogger Mickey Kaus took out papers filed to run for U.S. Senate in California, he told LA Weekly. The Venice resident said he’ll run this year against Barbara Boxer for her seat. He said he took out filed papers at with the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters, although a spokeswoman there could not yet confirm the filing.

The Democrat has been centrist and even conservative on some of the issues on which Boxer has taken a more left-leaning stand, including immigration: He does not favor amnesty and favors a more restrictive national policy.

Mickey’s even admitted to it on his site, which would explain why it’s not been updated for a week otherwise.  For obvious reasons, I’m not endorsing him – a hypothetical Senator Kaus would caucus with the Democrats, which breaks the first rule of my endorsement criteria – but if you’re a Democrat who is tired of a liberal idiot* or idiots representing you, well, do something useful about it.  Nobody cares if you’re just going to be mortified.

PS: If you’re wondering about a particular… consistency… to the slurs against Mickey in that LA Daily post‘s comment section, go click the links found here.  Essentially, this is a legacy of the pushback against Kaus for taking the John Edwards adultery story seriously.  What?  Why are the netroots still trying to use that line, even though it turned out that the netroots had been collectively and individually played for fools?

Re-read the last half of that last sentence for the answer.

*My apologies: that should be a Senatorial idiot.

Between the challenge from the Republicans

and now the primary within her own party, the former Miss Levy must be feeling awfully “Boxed” in.

Gotta say what Moe can't

I like Mickey Kaus. In the “needer-needer” world of 21st-century politics, he is clearly a thoughtful individual who deserves to be heard. Kaus v. DeVore, and maybe I vote for Kaus — depending on the place we’re in as a nation that day. But I love the race either way. It might even be about big ideas!!

Yes, it’s a problem that he caucuses with the Democrats, but I like the idea of people seeing the Scott Brown’s and Mickey Kaus’ of the world getting a shot. It might help bring up those sub-20% congressional approval ratings.

Moderate and Conservative Democrats...

…only empower their liberal base and liberal leadership. A blue dog will role over on the important things just as well as a “centrist” Democrat…never forget that.

Kaus Would Just be Another Pay Dawg Dem

My Guess Is That Someone Like Kaus Doesn't Have a Constituency Among CA Dems

IJB Tuesday, March 2nd at 11:26AM EST (link)

CA Dems are pretty much monolithically leftie – this isn’t South Carolina, after all! So my guess is that he won’t get much traction among CA Dems.

That said, like with Lincoln in AR, even a 2nd tier Primary challenge against a sitting incumbent is further evidence of the incumbent’s weakness and beatability in the General…

(Of course, Kaus hasn’t officially *filed* yet, has he? So I’ll reserve judgment until he actually officially enters the race…)

I'll still have no love for the Democrats

but I genuinely enjoy reading Mickey Kaus. He certainly had the right position on amnesty and was the only mainstream voice telling the truth about John Edwards.

Would his hat in the ring affect how Boxer would vote on a reconciliation sidecar? If she had to play to the middle, then I’d find it a good thing.

I Also Like Kaus

I don’t know if I could actually pull the lever for him, but I wouldn’t be too upset with a Senator Kaus.

He would be a sort of reincarnation of Pat Moynihan for Democrats where he has the gift of telling his Party the truth they don’t want to hear. Even though I don’t always agree with his conclusions, he’s intellectually honest and in my opinion the smartest blogger out there.

I think he would be on our side far more times than say Lieberman, which is pretty good for a California Democrat. He’s downright conservative on issues like immigration, racial preferences, unions, and national defense.

I hope Kaus gets a fair shake and makes it a race with Boxer.
