…third parties are a dead end.
…she quickly pivoted to the broader question of whether the Tea Party movement might successfully field its own candidates in national elections, and on that point she sounded far from convinced.
“Now the smart thing will be for independents who are such a part of this Tea Party movement to, I guess, kind of start picking a party,” [former Governor Sarah] Palin said. “Which party reflects how that smaller, smarter government steps to be taken? Which party will best fit you? And then because the Tea Party movement is not a party, and we have a two-party system, they’re going to have to pick a party and run one or the other: ‘R’ or ‘D’.”
Ace (the aforementioned, and self-described, GOP shill*), cut right to the chase when responding to both this, and the fairly obvious point that a functional third party = Democratic victory:
I’m not interested in “sending messages” when those messages come with the other, all-caps message: BARACK OBAMA AND HIS MOST STALWART LIBERAL ALLIES WIN, IN BLOW-OUTS, FOR AN ENTIRE GENERATION.
I’m not interested in a message like that, either. Mind you, I’m not as worried about this as either Ace or Allahpundit is. Third parties are often threatened, but are rarely a problem on the federal level. Indeed, if the Democrats are really relying on and spending resources on the plan of encouraging a national third-party in time for November then it’s official: Congress will flip in the next election. Both Houses. You don’t make desperation plays like that unless you’re, well, desperate.
Besides, the RNC had a rush of oxygen to the brain. I guess that we must have tried everything else, first**.

I am an outsider, although I’ve been admitted to insider venues.
I want the Republican Party to win in 2010 and 2012, And I think it will.

More Reid and Pelosi or less Reid and Pelosi.

OccamsRazor (Diary) Thursday, February 18th at 1:00AM EST (link)It’d be a 2nd term.
The largest leverage we have over Obama right now is his legacy and his want for a 2nd term (similar analogies with the fools you mention). He wants what every first term President wants, a second one. At that point, God forbid, with no motive to even PRETEND to care for the American public, he’ll steamroll right over our shining hill.
I have a new found respect for Palin the way she is handling the Tea Party movement and the role that’s been thrust upon her in it. She understands a little tough love is needed, which may lose a fraction of the members, but it’s becoming clearer to me anyway that she sees a bigger picture. I personally just assumed (I know I know) that most of the Tea Party types would vote for her if she did nothing at all but run for Republican. She refuses to be defined by the media, yet keeps up public appearances and meets them head on regardless.
I like this move on her part.
The Thing is, anyone who has been listening to Palin
Section9 Thursday, February 18th at 9:27PM EST (link)…understood that she was always going to be loyal to the Republican Party, even though the Clown Shoes Party in D.C. made every effort to throw her under the bus.
She’s one of us. She’s telling the TEA people that she’s not going 3rd party, and that that route is a sure path to a permanent liberal majority.

Michael Dugas (Diary) Wednesday, February 17th at 9:39PM EST (link)That Cornyn and the NRSC didn’t come to this affair. I have come to believe that the NRSC and to a lesser degree the NRCC are no longer friends to their Republican constituents. The circling of the wagons around Fiorina in Cali and negative ads against Devore are just another sign of how disconnected they are from the people they claim to represent.
How can they claim to be sooo different than Obama and speak on how bad the stimulus is and the bailouts and cap and trade etc and then vocally and financially support a candidate who supports those issues? It’s nuts!

lenguado Thursday, February 18th at 10:47AM EST (link)So let me get this straight…..a generic “Tea Party” candidate polls at around 40% against a Dem or Repug that polls in the high 20s – and a Third Party isn’t viable…. hmmm.
Seems to me that it is the Repuglican party that isn’t viable, and should be asking to join the Tea Party….but then again, I went to a Public Indoctrination Center for my grade school education, and may not understand the math involved.
If I am to put my faith in a Repuglican party that so artfully took care of our country and economy, but didn’t use any lube, and has shown NO real deep roots of changing their ways, then you can count on my not voting next time around. All I see is a lot of talk, but no real “CHANGE” on their part. And when I say THEIR, I mean the ‘establishment’ Repugs.
At this point, voting for them is the same as being asked which method is to be used on you, hanging or electrocution – and then being forced to pull the lever yourself…. Only if & WHEN they clean house – maybe I will consider voting for the ‘establishment’s’ candidate. The acid test will be if McInsane gets elected to another term this year – or if the Repugs run Romney in 2012. Either of those, no point in voting in 2012.
IMHO
"Repug" is a good way to get banned, lenguado. Oh, Niel, cleanup needed. nt
