How… extraordinary.
Barader was seized in a secret joint operation by Pakistani and US intelligence forces, according to US government officials quoted in the New York Times. Mullah Barader has been in Pakistani custody for several days, with US and Pakistani intelligence officials both taking part in interrogations, according to the officials. Though Barack Obama has banned US agencies from using forms of torture such as waterboarding, Pakistani questioning techniques are frequently brutal.

Obama didn't ban squat
partyof1 Tuesday, February 16th at 11:19PM EST (link)I know you were only quoting the original Guardian article but it bothers me every time I read that.
Putting aside for the moment that the CIA only ever waterboarded 3 detainees, and they stopped in 2003, six years before Obama rode in triumphantly to “ban” waterboarding in 2009…
This is from Obama’s executive order “banning” non field-manual interrogation:
There shall be established a Special Task Force on Interrogation and Transfer Policies (Special Task Force) to review interrogation and transfer policies.
The mission of the Special Task Force shall be:
(i) to study and evaluate whether the interrogation practices and techniques in Army Field Manual 2 22.3, when employed by departments or agencies outside the military, provide an appropriate means of acquiring the intelligence necessary to protect the Nation, and, if warranted, to recommend any additional or different guidance for other departments or agencies; and
(ii) to study and evaluate the practices of transferring individuals to other nations in order to ensure that such practices comply with the domestic laws, international obligations, and policies of the United States and do not result in the transfer of individuals to other nations to face torture or otherwise for the purpose, or with the effect, of undermining or circumventing the commitments or obligations of the United States to ensure the humane treatment of individuals in its custody or control.
Translation: Now that the dust has settled and Bush has done the hard, and some say dirty work, Obama can play the good cop who saves the world from Bush’s excess. — BUT If another 9/11 occurs, Obama wants the power to do *exactly what Bush did*. And why? Because it worked. And it was necessary under the circumstances.
But you don’t have to take my word for it. Just ask Obama about his Special Task Force loophole.
Or you can ask Mullah Barader his opinion on Obama’s extraordinary rendition ban as Moe points out.
Or you can ask Raymond Azar.

Or you can ask Al gore:
The first time I proposed a snatch, in 1993, the White House Counsel, Lloyd Cutler, demanded a meeting with the President to explain how it violated international law. Clinton had seemed to be siding with Cutler until Al Gore belatedly joined the meeting, having just flown overnight from South Africa.
Clinton recapped the arguments on both sides for Gore: Lloyd says this. Dick says that. Gore laughed and said, “That’s a no-brainer. Of course it’s a violation of international law, that’s why it’s a covert action. The guy is a terrorist. Go grab his ass.”

With which I don’t disagree.
How would you like to be waterboarded?
This is just a question. From a Vietnam vet.
I don’t presume to know the answer.

My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

I don't think its appropriate to assume one wants to be waterboarded...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Tuesday, February 16th at 11:34PM EST (link)however, its safe to assume that the tool is effective in deriving information from your enemy, and the enemy will use far worse against you. And again this is waterboarding not the water-cure. I can think of some worse pain invoking weapon systems (i.e. PEP) that will much more effective and quicker than water torture of course no one would waste that much money in getting information.
kowalski, and I don't want my adrenaline pumping while strapped...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Tuesday, February 16th at 11:42PM EST (link)down in chair eyes covered being forced to feel like I am drowning or unable to breath, yes I don’t want to be waterboarded but then again now that I know I would’nt die it kind of makes it useless. Let me tell you, having adrenaline pumping while unable to fight or flight and feeling like you can’t breath is very traumatic. I am sure a panic or anxiety attacks from PTSD feel quite similar.
I would rather be waterboarded than tortured. nt

My (combined) wish list.
Technically, Is it Rendition?
bigalsouth (Diary) Wednesday, February 17th at 6:59AM EST (link)Rendition is prohibited as “prisoners of war may not be transferred to any state where they are likely to be tortured or inhumanely treated. ”
http://www.parl.gc.ca/information/library/PRBpubs/prb0748-e.htm#history
So technically, it is not rendition if Mullah Baradar is apprehended in Pakistan and “interrogated” in Pakistan. Participation by agenst of the US Government do not make it rendition.

If we are conducting combined ops with the Pak's...
nessa (Diary) Wednesday, February 17th at 11:39AM EST (link)…custody of anyone captured would be covered before the ops even began. So by a technicality its not rendition, the captured scumbag always belonged to the Paks. But its all semantics. What we call enhanced interrogation is just warming up for the Paks.

Only problem was that conclusion is not based on the evidence. I look forward to seeing the MSM spin this story when they find out what was in fact used to gain his “co-operation.”
