And remember when a bunch of groups got freaked out about it because it meant that a Republican would be instantly aware of any organized shenanigans designed to muck about with the Census?
And remember when the President hastily pandered to those groups by declaring that Gregg wouldn’t be overseeing the Census?
And remember how Gregg then – and quite rightly – told the President what he could do with his Cabinet position?
“No! No! No!” he yelled out. “You can’t make that type of statement with any legitimacy. You cannot make that statement.”
Gregg then held up a guideline for the TARP, which he helped write in 2008 to keep the country from further economic collapse.
“This is the law,” he said. “Let me tell you what the law says. Let me read to you again because you don’t appear to understand the law. The law is very clear. The monies recouped from the TARP shall be paid into the general fund of the Treasury for the reduction of the public debt. It’s not for a piggy bank because you’re concerned about lending to small businesses and you want to get a political event when you go out and make a speech in Nashua, N.H.”
(Via The Other McCain & Pundit & Pundette) Do you think that Peter Orszag is regretting right now how that all turned out? I think that he’s regretting right now how that all turned out.

I Agree but... he did this too!
Ireland Thursday, February 4th at 4:41PM EST (link)In the Senate Gregg was the leading Republican negotiator and author of the TARP program, which bailed out financial institutions, while he had a multi-million dollar investment in the Bank of America
Which may explain why he knows so much about TARP because he wrote it.
I’m a conservative looking for candidates who are uncorrupted, honest and truthful, Yes, I know that’s a tall order. I am just sick of these games they play, voting for Bills that will increase the power and bank accounts (Pelosi, Reid, Feinstein, Baucus, Dodd, Conrad, Murkowski, McCain, Kyl and the list goes on and on) If they want my vote, then they need to tell us what they’ve done that can or could be seen as a personal interest issue, so either sell your stock or withdraw his vote because of the conflict of interest.
I’m sick of being told to vote because the alternative is far worse. I’m looking for better people than to just to settle for what is offered.
I am so glad to see this on the FP. Thanks, Moe.

GOP Needs to Release Their Own Budget
Spartan4Life (Diary) Thursday, February 4th at 12:49PM EST (link)John Kasich advised this strategy last night on Kudlow’s show. I think the timing is exactly right.
Kasich also pointed out that they were successful creating surpluses in the 90′s by cutting taxes AND cutting spending simultaneously. Why are there no Republicans out there reminding people that we had a Republican Congress during the 90′s when the Dems want to brag about surpluses?
Also, while I agree the deficit Obama inherited was too high, what was it in 2006 when The Democrat party retook Congress? I believe it was less than 20% what it is today.
Until Obama figures out that the Democrat Congress is his real problem he has no chance of success.
Just for info.
gekster (Diary) Thursday, February 4th at 1:13PM EST (link)Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress, and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democratic Party. They controlled the budget process for FY 2008 and FY 2009, as well as FY 2010 and FY 2011. In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases. For FY 2009, though, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the FY 2009 budgets.
And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete FY 2009.
If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the FY 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets. If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself.
In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is I inherited a deficit that I voted for and then I voted to expand that deficit four-fold since January 20th.
from an e-mail I got from my sister Diane in Ca., so take with a grain salt
They say Republicans are for the rich, Democrats are for the poor.
If they need more voters,
then they have to make more of who they are for.
