This was easily the most important thing said at yesterday’s Brown/Coakley debate.
(Via American Glob; H/T The Other McCain; see also Nice Deb.)
There’s a reason why Brown raised 1.3 million dollars in just over 24 hours (and over 1 million in 24 hours) yesterday; it’s because the Massachusetts Senatorial race reeks of entitlement. The major reason why Brown is able to be in a position to line himself up for an upset in a week? Because Coakley decided that she owned the seat sufficiently to not even bother with campaigning. And why did she decide that? Because she’s a Massachusetts Democrat and the Kennedy clan signed off on her nomination. What else did she need?
The truly ironic bit? Ted Kennedy must be spinning in his grave over this dismissive display of arrogance. The man was legendary for his thoroughness when it came to constituent services.

Brown can win.
proudmarinemom (Diary) Tuesday, January 12th at 7:52AM EST (link)But Democrats have already said they’ll block his seating until after the compromised HCR bill is safely through the Senate.
Is anyone mounting a legal challenge to that tactic? What can be done to force them to seat Brown immediately?
It's more the MA Dems doing that.
swami7774 (Diary) Tuesday, January 12th at 8:25AM EST (link)They’re saying “gee, it could take us weeks to collect all the overseas ballots before we can possibly certify a winner.” Of course, in 2007 they certified Nikki Tsongas 2 days after she won a special Congressional election.
The MA Dems have a hammerlock on the legislative process. Twice since 2004 they changed the rules on how a senator gets replaced.
They’ll do whatever they want, because they CAN.
Today, there is a name for the political doctrine that rejoices in scarcity of everything except government. The name is environmentalism.
Then he needs to win by a landslide (nt)

retail1 Tuesday, January 12th at 7:52AM EST (link)Kennedy learned from another legendary Mass. Democrat.
Brian Hibbert (Diary) Tuesday, January 12th at 8:12AM EST (link)As you say, Kennedy was legendary for constituent services. It’s what kept him popular in Mass despite all the antics that made those of us outside the state scratch our heads and wonder how they kept electing him. It’s a lesson we can learn from our adversaries.
Tip O’Neil wrote a book on politics which has some great guidelines for how to win elections. The most important lesson he learned (and teaches) is to listen to the people who vote for you and ask them for their vote at EVERY election. Don’t assume that people who know you will vote for you. People like to be asked.
I highly recommend everyone here read his book “Man of the House”. Many of the things he did to win elections are illegal and I don’t recommend them, but other things are both basic politics and common sense. Two things that are sadly lacking these days. Warning: O’Neil had no love for Reagan or Republicans in general and it shows in his books, but the smallball rules of politics he talks about are worth overlooking his quirks.

I Thought That Was the Defining Moment
Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Tuesday, January 12th at 8:24AM EST (link)Hotair linked it last night too. Local talk radio hosts are talking about it.
It touches the real rage people here feel. As much as conservatives would like to believe that all this anger is about national politics and conservative principles. Its also about the transparency, the arrogance, the entitlements… that’s what hitting with independents and Democrats that are coming his way.
But isn't it scary that the room didn't erupt in applause? -nt

bk (Diary) Tuesday, January 12th at 9:50AM EST (link)Yes, it truly was the defining moment of the debate
The_Rebel (Diary) Tuesday, January 12th at 12:58PM EST (link)Before Ted Kennedy (long before) held that seat, it was held by the likes of Daniel Webster for many years, and after him, Charles Sumner, for many more years. Webster was a Whig and Sumner a Republican, albeit a liberal one. So it’s far from being a Democrat seat, just because Teddy held it for 47 years. The people will tell us next Tuesday whose seat that is. My money is on Scott Brown, and so is my vote.
My credit card might be a little hot next month...
NeoKong (Diary) Tuesday, January 12th at 8:31AM EST (link)But I don’t care.
This is the only chance we have to grab a U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts in the next twenty years and I’ll go broke if that is what it takes.
Scott Brown smoked Martha Coakley last night and made her look like your typical tax and spend liberal.(Which she is) She also came across as clueless on national security.
If the voters of Massachusetts pick Coakley over Brown then they are friggin’ losers who deserve higher taxes and crappy health care.
Honestly…those are the choices.
Vote for a shred of sanity or vote to become a servant of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.
Martha Coakley is absolutely awful and I just can’t imagine anyone saying “Yeah Coakley…I like her. I’m voting Coakley” after the drubbing she took standing next to Scott Brown and that Rick Moranis fellow.

All 565 are the "Peoples Seat"
kmacwayne (Diary) Tuesday, January 12th at 8:45AM EST (link)A clear and stunning statement to every incumbent.
I pray every Legislature and Senator gets this into their heads today.
I hope something happens that he can have an effect on the Health Care Bill – but as the 41st vote he will be a mighty brake on the train that is bankrupting our country.
When the Bible says “turn the other cheek” – it means that it would cause your abuser to use their open hand ( as opposed to the back of their hand) to slap you. Something considered dishonorable in that time – The Democrats will show their dishonor as they try once again to manipulate the health care vote through State Legislation. We present our other cheek as a temporary pain compared to their peril of showing their true hand.
I believe the people of the great state of Massachusetts are Americans first and democrats second. They will present their other cheek, but remember the sting.
Excellent statement, and it resonates
RedBeard Tuesday, January 12th at 9:25AM EST (link)It’s a reminder that we threw off the yoke of royalty back in 1776, and should not volunteer to return to such vile entitlements.
Anyone reverently referring to the “Kennedy seat” needs to be slapped. Repeatedly. Ok, metaphorically, if you insist.

Did you notice how reflexive that statement was?
Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Tuesday, January 12th at 9:37AM EST (link)You can’t really prepare for that type of truly extemporaneous remark.
Where is that attitude with every member of Congress?
Brown just continues to impress me.
“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Tuesday, January 12th at 9:43AM EST (link)Unfortunately, it isnt reflexive. He’s had to pull that card over and over again.
Brown shouldn't have to keep saying it
RedBeard Tuesday, January 12th at 10:10AM EST (link)Good that he is doing so, but depressing that the people need to have it pointed out to them. The people’s willing acceptance of a ruling class is a bellwether of the educational decline in this country.

Perhaps, but it was said with resolute conviction
Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Tuesday, January 12th at 10:35AM EST (link)Take my word for it, you can’t fake that.
Irrespective of whether that is a tailored retort, he meant it.
The arrogance of Coakley and the Democratic Party is wearing on the people of Mass.

Brian_Roastbeef (Diary) Tuesday, January 12th at 2:56PM EST (link)I have to like seeing this. Matt Drudge always looks for the best news story out of any situation; and there is no denying that Brown hit a home run on that question. There’s certainly nothing like having your best moment highlighted in general news coverage of the debate.
Of course 92% say that Brown won the debate… but I’m just going to assume that Mitt Romney central might not have the most accurate polling sample. I will instead take the $1.3 M raised yesterday as a good sign for the Brown campaign.
I had expressed my belief earlier that national attention on the campaign could only harm it with the vast advantages the left generally has in Massachusetts. I still fear that it could harm us, but I am very happy to see that the Brown campaign seems well able to adapt with the direction that this is taking. He ran a strong quiet campaign over the holidays to get this far, and now he is standing strong under the national spotlight. I can only hope that the remaining week sees his cause advanced.
Even if just getting it close is a victory; I’d really like to see him get the win. Brown seems to me like somebody worth having in the Senate on his own merits – not just to deny the left their 60th seat. I hope the people of Massachusetts are able to see that on the 19th.
This is a defining special election
anotherindyfilmguy (Diary) Tuesday, January 12th at 7:02PM EST (link)If he loses then the state is most likely shown to be fully bought and paid for by the Democrat national machine to those who haven’t figured it out yet with the full nasty national socialist propaganda machine in full display for everyone else to see.
If he somehow* wins… goodbye Dem Congressional supermajority and goodbye to many more of them in November – everywhere they are running for office/re-election/retention.
*such as people voting for him in more numbers than can be fraudulently fixed by Dems running the polling stations or cheating the recounts as in the disgraceful Franken election fraud (or something odd like that)…
