Gov. Bill Ritter (D-CO) abruptly withdrawing from re-election race?

Two questions: is it true? – and if it’s true, does it have anything to do with this?

Governor Ritter was embroiled in a separate controversy this year when he nominated his scandal-plagued chief of staff, who he is rumored to be having an extramarital affair with, to be the state’s top federal prosecutor. Stephanie Villafuerte abruptly withdrew her nomination to be Colorado’s next U.S. Attorney when the media exposed her role in illegally accessing a restricted database involving an illegal immigrant drug dealer who sexually assaulted a child after Ritter, then Denver District Attorney, gave him a probation deal.

No, that’s a completely different guy than Senator Max Baucus (D MT), who also tried to give his adulterous lover a job as a US Attorney. Apparently it’s becoming quite the fad among Democratic legislators these days.

I guess the real question now is...

MacAoidh (Diary) Tuesday, January 5th at 9:22PM EST (link)

did Ritter get drunk before he made that announcement?

This race is much easier with him than without him

Agreed.

I could see Romanoff (jumping out of the Senate race) and/or Hickenlooper running. Both would be more difficult to defeat.

I don't know bout Hick, he never saw a tax increase that he not only liked,

USNJIMRET (Diary) Tuesday, January 5th at 10:36PM EST (link)

but actively campaigned for.
Remember the Tax Measures A-F last time around? I seem to recall that most of them passed, but the point is that he, Hick, is every bit the tax, tax, tax Democrat that a heck of a lot of people are just fed up with.

But Wouldn't That Make The GOP CO Senate Bid Easier? (nt)

IJB Tuesday, January 5th at 10:37PM EST (link)

Not really.

NightTwister (Diary) Tuesday, January 5th at 10:46PM EST (link)

Bennet’s got a ton of cash. We were really hoping he’d have to spend some of it on primary against Romanoff.

Bennet’s weak. I don’t care how much cash he has – cash can’t turn you into something you’re not. The guy’s a cypher.

CO Republicans should *want* to face Bennet in the general.

I think the GOP’s chances in the CO Senate race just markedly improved…

I answered your question.

NightTwister (Diary) Tuesday, January 5th at 10:54PM EST (link)

The more money Bennet has, the easier it will be for him to win. That said, he’s a terrible candidate. Having more money helps him overcome that. In any case, Bennet will win the primary whether Romanoff is there or not, so it’s not about who the Republican runs against.

Just because he has ‘tons of cash’ won’t suddenly give him a personality, or make him a dynamic speaker. Remember Pete Coors?

Money helps.

NightTwister (Diary) Wednesday, January 6th at 8:54AM EST (link)

Doesn’t make him win, but you have to admit more money is better than less money.

How did these guys get elected?

Kyle-MI (Diary) Tuesday, January 5th at 10:30PM EST (link)

Don’t forget about the former New Jersey governor (before Corzine) who appointed his gay lover to be the state homeland security director.

Here is a little advice for all Democrats (and politicians in general) who want to reward their lovers with government jobs: at least appoint them to some meaningless but important sounding post, not something important that has anything to do with criminal justice or keeping your citizens safe. Give them a made-up position that has little or no responsibility. If they don’t have the political sense to do that, I cannot understand how they ever had enough political sense to be elected in the first place.

2006 was a terrible year for CO Republicans.

But neither of those reasons have seem to much bother Democrats, especially nowadays. You have to own and know how to use a moral compass for issues like that to carry any personal weight.
But just as possible it might be
Plain Old Math…yep those nasty old numbers that Democrats can fudge and at times lie about but usually not escape from. That and maybe just a smidgen of fear mixed in….I hope. Rasmussen has some recent poll numbers that might not be all that encouraging to Soon-To-Be Citizen Ritter.

Ritter, Cherry, and Dorgan flying into the wind

Mcinnis is good candidate for us. Sure Ritter was easier to defeat but its still race I think we prevail in

Curious though does AG Sutter take a new look a this race now?

Watch out in CT Dodd is going to drop out soon I predict

That would be a nightmare

redtillimdead (Diary) Tuesday, January 5th at 11:25PM EST (link)

Cherry, Ritter, and Dodd dropping out are all BAD news. They are easily to beat and will be replaced with much stronger candidates. However, in MI and CO, we still have a chance. In CT, we dont have much chance without Dodd.

Dodd's not dropping out

billincsprings Tuesday, January 5th at 11:38PM EST (link)

Even local CT news is saying he’s running hard. http://www.necn.com/Boston/Politics/2010/01/04/Sen-Dodd-kicks-off-New-Year/1262660225.html

I hope not either

I guess PPP did poll yesterday and they are saying if Dodd drops out and AG goes in he holds seat for Dems?

I think pressure will be put on Dodd to drop out I hope he stays in

If Dodd does drop out, I wonder if the CT Dems

Is it possible the Senate also could flip?

God bless Barack Obama.

Still doubtful

CowboyUp4419 (Diary) Wednesday, January 6th at 12:48AM EST (link)

We’d need 11 to stop Biden from breaking ties in a 50-50 split so even if we hold all our seats we’d have to take Arkansas, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Connecticut, Delaware, Colorado and Illinois (all races where we’ve got a decent to excellent chances for pickups) along with New York (if we can get Rudy back in we’ve got a good chance here, too) and two others. At that point we’re looking at California (long odds and a VERY expensive race) or Indiana unless we win the special election in Massachsetts. We ought to make gains but a flip is still unlikely. In 2012 the Dems have to defend 24 seats where we’ve only got 9 so that will be where we make our big gains.

I wouldn't take short odds, of course...but

First Dorgan, then Ritter, now the Wash Post says Dodd will retire. This is a good time to be a right wing extremist nut job!!! Thanks for raising me the RIGHT way Mom & Dad.

According to NY Times Dodd is quitting

itsjoanne Wednesday, January 6th at 12:46AM EST (link)

I’m a bit concerned about this one. I think Ct was in play for Republicans because Dodd is so unpopular. This may help the Dems hold the seat.

Dodd dropping out is not a good thing...

…because if it was there would currently be a Republican occupying the former senate seat of Bob Torricelli instead of that puke, Lautenberg.

This is history.
