Ben Nelson (D) bringing everyone together!

This takes skill – but apparently Reid’s amendment is up to the task.

The National Organization of Women:

We call on all senators who consider themselves friends of women’s rights to reject the Manager’s Amendment, and if it remains, to defeat this cruelly over-compromised legislation.

Planned Parenthood apparently agrees.

National Right to Life:

NRLC will score the upcoming roll call votes on cloture on the Reid manager’s amendment, and on the underlying bill, as votes in favor of legislation to allow the federal government to subsidize private insurance plans that cover abortion on demand, to oversee multi-state plans that cover elective abortions, and to empower federal officials to mandate that private health plans cover abortions even if they do not accept subsidized enrollees, among other problems.

In addition, if the final bill produced by a House-Senate conference committee does not contain the Stupak-Pitts Amendment, NRLC will score the House and Senate votes on the conference report as votes to allow federal mandates and subsidies for coverage of elective abortion.

And Rep. Bart Stupak (D) has or has not sent out his people to talk to or not talk to Sen. Mitch McConnell’s (R) people. Hard to say.

If your head hurts, don’t worry about it. That’s just the Great Old Ones eating your brain.

Don't put money on Bart Stupak

gnomechumpsky Saturday, December 19th at 3:26PM EST (link)

You’ll get the same results as putting money on Ben Nelson.

Agreed. The best (only?) option now is that

throwback59 Saturday, December 19th at 3:36PM EST (link)

the Republicans can delay the vote past Christmas and the Senators have to face the voters (what a novel idea) during the Christmas break.
I don’t know what angers me more now, the health care fiasco or the global warming fiasco perpetrated by the Climate-Gate denier-in-chief.

what can we do?

proudgop (Diary) Saturday, December 19th at 3:41PM EST (link)

Besides contacting Dem Senators and Snowe and Collins ( we have to make sure they stay locked NO)

what else can I do right now?

I have the same questions.

Not sure I believe the denial, FWIW, but then it is (cough! cough!) politico.

Why, I'm downright offended, Mr. Hippie. Everyone knows

eburke (Diary) Saturday, December 19th at 5:02PM EST (link)

that Politico is the bastion of fairness and integrity. I mean, why else would they be the number one choice of blogs to be quoted by the MSM?

Swamp - I read somewhere a little while ago (like in the last hour)

eburke (Diary) Saturday, December 19th at 4:58PM EST (link)

that Stupak is disassociating himself from those emails. Now, there’s a couple of ways of looking at this, IMHO.

1) I find it hard to believe that a staffer would pen those kinds of emails without the knowledge of her boss and Bart is publicly backpedaling in order to save the lives of his pets and to keep from being fitted with concrete shoes;

or,

2) Bart’s doing what virtually all the so-called ‘moderate’ Dems have done so far which is setting himself up for the flop; (“You see, Mr & Mrs. Pro-life constituent, I would have preferred my original language but this language was good enough for my pro-life colleagues Nelson & Casey so, upon further review, I didn’t feel it was my place to blow up the delicately negotiated, much-needed health care reform”)

My heart is praying for #1.

My head is telling me it’s #2

RE: Reading Stupak: House Radicals vs. Senate Radicals

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Saturday, December 19th at 5:05PM EST (link)

I’ll take signs from Stupak. Remember, he bailed in the original. We had about 40 Dems without his pro-life sell outs.

I think the key will be the die hard moon bats in the House. There’s about thirty of them that are just plain nuts.

I just hope that some or most of the Blue Dogs who voted no the first time around, stick with us and we can pick up about ten to twenty of the wild-eyed whack jobs.

I bet Kucinich is with us this time. That crazy Rep from the Berkeley area. Maybe Maxine Waters.

Talk about strange bedfellows, if I actually find myself

eburke (Diary) Saturday, December 19th at 5:13PM EST (link)

being thankful for Dennis “the Menace” Kucinich and Maxine “I’m a black rascist and dumber than a box of rocks ” Waters, I fully expect the sun to rise in the west tomorrow.

That would be just too surreal.

(I do have one small quibble with ya though, Swamp. You sure there’s only 30 moon bats in the House; Seems a bit light to me :-) )

If the Dems get 60 on Wednesday,

SoFiMil (Diary) Saturday, December 19th at 5:27PM EST (link)

will the House vote after conference either have 218 Dems or less than 200? Wednesday’s Senate vote I believe will be either 60-40 or 55-45, but I don’t see any chance final vote coming in at 59.

Saw a remark the other day, maybe at Ace of Spades. eburke,

janis (Diary) Saturday, December 19th at 4:40PM EST (link)

that pretty much made it look like a lock that the Gov. of Nebraska would run if Nelson voted for this dog. 61% of his electorate said “NO!!”, but he voted for it anyway. Apparently they aren’t as charmed with the loot as Nelson thinks they will be.

Thanks for the update and good news, janis.....

Activists Taking Action: Unified Patriots

After these past weeks I'm not getting my hopes up about *anything* from the D side *but*

eburke (Diary) Saturday, December 19th at 4:46PM EST (link)

if you were about to be the Dem to pull the plug on the whole thing, and *if* you were actually a serious legislator looking at legislation rather than politics (2 *gargantuan* ifs) this would be the way to do it; don’t announce it ahead of time so as to avoid the crushing pressure that you *know* would be coming your way…just walk onto the floor of the Senate right as the votes about to close, and oppose cloture.

If Webb is of a mind to do this, keeping a low profile would be the way to do it.

But I don’t believe in Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, or the Easter Bunny either.

“All that need be done for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”

Unified Patriots

My reading exactly, eburke. Those who

redneck_hippie (Diary) Saturday, December 19th at 4:55PM EST (link)

led the Not at Yes parade were opening the bidding process. By hunkering down and playing cards close to the chest, the intent is, at worst, to keep all options open. The bill is obviously toxic. Obama is more toxic by the day. To clown for the media and sell one’s vote will not play well. Webb is at least that smart, if nothing else.

Still wondering if there is any party-switcher lurking in the weeds. If there is one, they are not to be expected to be Not at Yes’ing on CNN, IMHO.

that the coal will create under crap and tax, and the fact that you could be a felon if you don’t follow all the rules about to be imposed on our health care system, not to mention the fact that I’m betting your on the ‘terrorist watch list’ for being a gun-loving, anti-abortion, single-issue, religious nut case, you may be looking at some serious time busting rocks at Leavenworth.

Just sayin’…ya know…friend to friend….I’m worried about ya.

The MSM is spinning it as a “dramatic” break through…..

However the reality is:

Climate deal falls short

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1209/30794.html

“You know, it raises an interesting question as to whether technically there’s actually a signature… It’s not a legally binding agreement, I don’t know what the protocols are,” said a bleary-eyed Obama, before hopping in Air Force One for the trip back to Washington.

But the good news is – we wanted Obama to fail at giving America away.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

proudmarinemom (Diary) Saturday, December 19th at 4:14PM EST (link)

this about Webb.

I think Webb sees the writing on the wall. (How could he not, with McDonnell and all the other Republicans winning by a huge margin in Virginia?)

I called his office (again!) today and go the answering machine. I assume he is there, but this is Saturday and we have two feet of snow and it’s still falling. Staff are probably absent.

Please, God, make him listen to his constituents. Please.

sorry

The bill might get worse

robert09 Saturday, December 19th at 5:06PM EST (link)

Remember one important fact – when the final bill goes to a vote, the democrats will need only 51 votes. What may fear is that once the bill goes back to conference, much of what has been stripped out by Lieberman and Nelson will be put back in. At that point Lieberman, Nelson, Webb, Lincoln and a few others will vote against the bill. What Reid has done is give these people cover…as long he has 51 votes, he won’t care if moderate dems vote no.

I can't help think of Nelson as Jar Jar Binks
