Erick wasn’t the only one who noticed that the President’s speech last night contained no use of the word ‘victory:’ Andrew Malcolm over at the LA Times’ blog observed that, too.
President Obama spoke 4,582 words in his primetime Afghanistan war speech at West Point last night.
He said “al Qaeda” 22 times.
He mentioned the “Taliban” 12 times.
And here’s how many times the Democratic chief executive used the word “victory” — 0.
That telling omission says more than anything about Obama’s 322d day in office when he gave his first major address as the United States’ commander-in-chief.
Mind you, I’m not particularly surprised. The ostensible audience for this speech – the cadets – already know more about victory than the President (or for that matter, me) could hope to tell them; and the actual audience (the progressive antiwar Democratic base) reacts to that particular word in much the same way that a traditional vampire reacts to a cross. Apparently, that means that mentioning ‘victory’ would be superfluous in the first place, and contraindicated in the second. At least to this administration.
All that being said: Saying “We have been at war for eight years, at enormous cost in lives and resources,” in front of a room full of people who have been taught about Shiloh and Okinawa? There’s a Presidential speechwriter out there who could use firing.

But you weren’t going to see any outbursts of excitement like you would have with Bush or another CinC that is not a surrender-monkey.

Which is why the "backroom" conversation was more interesting...
Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Wednesday, December 2nd at 11:05AM EST (link)Even the passage Moe refers to- “the enormous cost in lives and resources” was political nomenclature which was very decipherable by cadets and active duty alike. What was he thinking- saying such things and pointing fingers? Especially in a hall where personal responsibility, duty and honor are the code.
Is Obama’s implication that the lives of family, classmates and friends given in the name of freedom and protecting our country were not worth it? Is it that the war in Iraq approve by congress, committed to by numerous nations, supported by Iraq’s democratically elected government and thus persecuted to the fullest by our CinC- which guaranteed freedom/stability for millions, stabilized the region, deposed a murderous dictator was some type of political folly led by the evil Bush?
Perhaps it’s the air tight terrorist safety net supported by President Bush and underwritten by our militarily since 2001 that Mr. Obama loathes so much? And furthermore the embarrassment of that string being broken by Major Hassan, under Obama’s watch and attributable to like minded, politically correct ideologues who advocate Obama’s worldview- presaging what is to come.
Honestly, what an absolute rank ideological amateur whose, disgraceful, disrespectful, dishonest conduct is only tolerated because of his office- not any personal affinity.
All I can say is 2012 will not come fast enough for our nation.

One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

MacArthur is rolling in his grave
tankertodd (Diary) Wednesday, December 2nd at 9:30AM EST (link)And many other generals who understood that victory is everything in war. I could probably find a million quotes, but this one stuck with me:
“There is no substitute for victory” – Douglas MacArthur
I know it’s memorized by every cadet (or used to be). I suspect this is engraved near his statue at West Point. Wonder if Barry dropped by.

MacArthur vs. Obama -- winning wars vs. "successfully end[ing] them"
ColdWarrior (Diary) Wednesday, December 2nd at 2:15PM EST (link)I wasn’t required to memorize General Douglas MacArthur’s farewell address to the cadets at West Point, but I was required to be very familiar with it as it was published in our “Bugle Notes” plebe handbook which contained much of the “poop” we would have to, in some cases, memorize and, in all cases, be quizzed on. Also, plebes were required to listen to an audio tape of the speech.
Compare Teleprompter Boy’s speech at West Point to the remarks of this soon-to-die WWII hero from West Point in 1962, making his farewell speech to his alma mater on the occasion of accepting the Sylvanus Thayer award given annually to the most distinguished graduate. After MacArthur outlined how, in 1962, the world was changing for American fighting men and the officers who would lead them, MacArthur continued, stressing, unlike Obama, the cadets’ future mission to WIN America’s wars and that, in war, there is no substitute for victory:
>>>
And through all this welter of change and development your mission remains fixed, determined, inviolable. It is to win our wars. Everything else in your professional career is but corollary to this vital dedication. All other public purpose, all other public projects, all other public needs, great or small, will find others for their accomplishments; but you are the ones who are trained to fight.
Yours is the profession of arms, the will to win, the sure knowledge that in war there is no substitute for victory, that if you lose, the Nation will be destroyed, that the very obsession of your public service must be Duty, Honor, Country.
Others will debate the controversial issues, national and international, which divide men’s minds. But serene, calm, aloof, you stand as the Nation’s war guardians, as its lifeguards from the raging tides of international conflict, as its gladiators in the arena of battle. For a century and a half you have defended, guarded and protected its hallowed traditions of liberty and freedom, of right and justice.
Let civilian voices argue the merits or demerits of our processes of government. Whether our strength is being sapped by deficit financing indulged in too long, by federal paternalism grown too mighty, by power groups grown too arrogant, by politics grown too corrupt, by crime grown too rampant, by morals grown too low, by taxes grown too high, by extremists grown too violent; whether our personal liberties are as firm and complete as they should be.
These great national problems are not for your professional participation or military solution. Your guidepost stands out like a tenfold beacon in the night: Duty, Honor, Country.
You are the leaven which binds together the entire fabric of our national system of defense. From your ranks come the great captains who hold the Nation’s destiny in their hands the moment the war tocsin sounds.
The long gray line has never failed us. Were you to do so, a million ghosts in olive drab, in brown khaki, in blue and gray, would rise from their white crosses, thundering those magic words: Duty, Honor, Country.
<<<
My favorite passage, among many, in MacArthur’s speech, came earlier in it:,
“Duty, Honor, Country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying points: to build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn.”

Obama The 18 Month Commander and Chief
ellisclarke (Diary) Wednesday, December 2nd at 10:23AM EST (link)Obama’s speech on Afghanistan can be compared to that of an academic applicant or junior Senator or union organizer attempting to outline his qualifications and resume for a job that is clearly above the applicant’s pay scale.
This applicant, Obama stated that the security of the world and the vital national interest of the USA, in Afghanistan, were limited to an 18 month objective to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and to prevent its capacity to threaten America and our allies in the future and during this same 18 month period deny al Qaeda a safe-haven and reverse the Taliban’s momentum and deny it the ability to overthrow the government because of the costs.
Yet in the text of this resume for the job of Commander and Chief for winning or finishing the war on radical Islamic terrorists, Obama will open the door to these same Taliban terrorists who abandon violence and respect the human rights of their fellow citizens, to create the conditions for an American troop pullout after 18 months from protecting the world from the common security and the vital national interest of Americans just prior to the 2012 USA Presidential elections.
The American people will be the judge on Obama’s applicant for the job of Commander and Chief.

It was a tragedy!
1stRichard (Diary) Wednesday, December 2nd at 10:49AM EST (link)Saying his, – administration will pursue to bring this war to a successful conclusion – killed the whole speech. You bring a conflict to a successful conclusion and fight a war to win ‘victory:’ Therefore, what is Afghanistan, a war or a conflict like what we had in Vietnam?
To recall why America and our allies were compelled to fight a war in Afghanistan – A fatwa, or declaration of war by Osama bin Laden was first published in Al Quds Al Arabi, in August, 1996 so the war did not start on 9|11 as Obama asserted. Dithering is as bad now as it was then.
Just days after 9/11, Congress authorized the use of force against al Qaeda and those who harbored them – what was omitted were the fact that this was open to all terrorists. What are we supposed to do, oops your name is not on the list so you can attack the US.
This speech was worse then a simple gaff, it was a tragedy.
Obama made a campaign promise to make Osama bin Laden his top priority, so where is Osama bin Laden?
The Obama Doctrine: If already fighting, don't fight to win, but to "successfully end." Otherwise, don't fight anymore. Period.

We now know that under Obama, America will no longer fight to win wars, but rather to “successfully end them,” whatever that means. America also will “prevent conflict.” In other words, America will “prevent conflict” by not fighting for its, or its allies’, vital national interests.
In the case of Afghanistan, the Obama Doctrine will be to surrender, which will be defined as a “successful end” to the war from the Libtards’ perspective. And America will, in general, no longer fight. Period.

In fact, the radical Islamists started the war in 1979 by attacking our embassy in Tehran when the democrat Carter was in power and coincidentally when Saddam Hussein came to power.
Mispost, sc, sorry .. on hearing comments on 8 yrs of war..

My own little piece of the "surge"
proudmarinemom (Diary) Wednesday, December 2nd at 11:22PM EST (link)is planning to be home for Christmas, at which time we hope to know more about the next (third) deployment.
Knowing that the C-in-C has announced to the enemy that the buzzer will sound in 18 months with no overtime, and our troops will be asked to take a knee while the Taliban runs circles around them does not make for a very Merry Christmas around here. If you’re going to send them, at least pretend you’ll support them through to victory, Mr. President.
crickets . . .chirping . . .
tell your piece of the surge...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Wednesday, December 2nd at 11:39PM EST (link)he will not be riding around theater in HMMWV’s anymore from what I am hearing of the scuttlebutt from a 3-Button. Let him know I am doing my best to get him counterinsurgency-EoF and force protection gear as fast I can in this bureaucracy.
;) Thank you!
proudmarinemom (Diary) Wednesday, December 2nd at 11:52PM EST (link)Of course, my child is the one who chose an MOS that requires that he stand all day with his fuzzy little head poking out of the top of the vehicle, usually with no shields, and his finger on the trigger of a very scary-looking machine gun.
He’ll have stories to tell his grandchildren.
We need a psyops piece
Uma Richie (Diary) Wednesday, December 2nd at 11:58PM EST (link)to inform/remind the bad guys that Obama never keeps his promises. Eighteen months and out? Pffft! In Obama-speak, that translates into a firm commitment to finish the job.
