Michael Patrick Leahy reports at tcotreport.com that in the end, Dede Scozzafava's endorsement of Owens was the deciding factor in swaying undecided independents to vote for Owens.

Calling it at 27% was irresponsible, especially with it so close.

I do find it intriguing that the first thing you decide to do is brag about how you wee right instead of lament that the Conservative lost.

Maybe you are a troll afterall.

the GOP shouldn't have bothered running Christie against Corzine. NJ is a deep blue state, and we just flipped it.

Look, I live in NY 23, and all I can say is that it not only is not a lost cause (yet), but that it far more conservative than this one vote makes it seem.

Just because the Dems made inroads here last year with Obama and today with Owens on a special election, I don't see why we'd right off what has been a strongly Republican district for 150 years. To me that says we need to fight to win it back and hold it, to encourage the base here to turn out and support GOP candidates.

Abandoning the district and expecting to lose is a sure recipe for defeat. Its not like we're talking about the NY city area here.

It looks like Hoffman got a better percentage of the votes in NY-23 than the liberal Gov. Corzine running for re-election & spending millions of his own money in the process.

...As Obama's 2008 margin showed.

And you can't take anything away McHugh's margins, as he was an incumbent.

This 2009 open seat race was the true test. And in this, the Dem got 49% of the vote.

That may mean that the R's can squeak out 51% next year. But it'll then be against a (short-term) D incumbent. So unless Owens majorly messes up, I imagine he's there to stay.

And it's likely that it will get harder and harder for an R to win there as time goes on, without even factoring in that the D's will likely make the District more D friendly after the 2012 redistricting.

So, should the R's keep running people there? Yes they should. (And they should in MA too.)
But should they expect to win in districts like these? Probably not anymore - I personally think that the bulk of R voters have decamped for other areas of the country over the years.

does not necessarily mean that Republicans voted for him. Given the districts voting patterns for decades upon decades, it may simply mean that Republicans sat this one out.

Given all of the confusion coming from the party leaders who were against, then for Hoffman, I think its likely that some folks just said to hell with it. Plus, it was a special election, so those are usually going to have poor turn out.

Unless thousands of Republican voters died since last year, there should still be a solid Republican majority here.

Its just needs to be tapped into.

now that I think about it, you have a deep blue state elect a somewhat conservative R, a state where 0 trounced McCain, and that position gets occupied for 4 years versus the one year for Owens.

The state-controlled media is going to spin no matter what we do or say.

The fact is that this was not a "huge" loss. Hoffman did very well against Owens, and lost by a only small margin, in a silly special election in which there was no GOP primary. Its not like the Dems can say they pounded Hoffman to scrap. They BARELY beat him, and did so only because he was an independent candidate. He wasn't a Republican, remember? I don't think the Dems are really going to want to talk about today much at all.

Besides, its a GOOD thing when the Dems and the state-controlled media call average citizens Nazis, extremists, and such. It gets the base fired up, and gets people thinking.

I respectfully submit that the state-controlled media is not as powerful and influential as it once was. In the 80's, when we had 3 networks and a bunch of liberal newspapers, a candidate like Hoffman would have been pounded to dust. The fact that he came so close to winning should show that the new media is making a huge difference. The old media is weak, and Hoffmans near-victory makes that evident.

The VA race was a big blow out. The Dems can't hide that by pointing at NY 23. And the NJ race, while a smaller victory percentage-wise, was a tremendous win for the GOP. That in and of itself should show us that even deep blue states like Jersey can be flipped if the right GOP candidate is given the resources he needs. Think about it for a moment. Corzine is toast! There is no way for the Dems to hide the fact that they just lost Jersey baby! That state is a liberal BASTION.

NY 23 is a blip on the radar screen in comparison.

GOP'er drops out, well then I am not voting mentality could set in as well. Lots of factors. Regardless, all of our speculation is meaningless with all of the spin from the MSM tomorrow. GOP/conservative wins means something negative is narrative, a D wins means something negative about the GOP. MSM are a bunch of lazy plagarizers from the AP. One guy writes the story and everyone else carries it even foxnews.com sometimes.
