Admittedly, nobody actually watches this stuff anymore, but it’s still just the smallest bit distressing to see the President threaten an entire industry.
The President doesn’t handle opposition to his will all that well, does he? Even the New York Times is forced to admit that this was ‘unusually harsh;’ Instapundit was harsh himself, but mostly just accurate when he called this ‘desperate.’ See also Business Week, particularly for some actual fact-checking of some of the claims made by the President (I’ll do one right now: that ‘bipartisan’ support he’s claiming is ONE Republican Senator who went along with ONE bill that was going to advance to the floor anyway). Monday’s going to be a fascinating day, really.
Exit question, as Allahpundit would have it: how much of this is just pique over the administration having to drop the Humana probe? I’m guessing at least a third.

PS: I think that we may safely assume that the $21 million that the insurance industry gave to Democrats in 2008 will represent the high-water mark of that particular section of the economy. I hope nobody at the DSCC, DCCC, or DNC was actually counting on that particular revenue stream…

beanerecmo Sunday, October 18th at 9:45AM EST (link)When will people realize that the health insurance companies are no different from auto/homeowner insurance companies; if risk is low premiums are lower; if risk is high, premiums will be higher. Further, you check your other insurance policies on what is and what is not covered – don’t you? Probably not, because people will complain that the insurance company denied something that was not covered even though (in all probability) it was clearly stated that the specific item was not covered. Pre-existing condition policies can be purchased. Is it more expensive, yes, because of the higher risk factor(s). Is it fair, yes, pay your own load; I do and many millions more do to, but we have to cover the people who made bad (financial) choices, and now they want the government to bail them out. Well, the government source for funds is the people who have been responsible and worked hard to provide for their families. Yes, I’m a senior (seasoned) citizen, too; and, I am really tired of taking care of whiners. Now, we’re putting more debt on our progeny; the freeloaders and whiners don’t care, because their progeny are the same as they are. Obama and his minions find that the Constitution is an inconvenience/impediment, because it says what the government can’t do; but, that hasn’t stopped the fascist social welfare collectivists from dictating. The insurance companies are in business to make money for the company and the shareholders (as is every other private concern). The government is only there to use/spend money; their only business is pork. What insurance companies are doing is informing their customers of the impact the various proposals will have on Medicare. Come on people, 1/3 of all Medicare/Medicare claims (remember Medicare/Medicaid are single payer systems) have been found to be fraudulent; and people want to turn even more money over to the government??!! Whether people agree with the term “death panel” or not is irrelevant. The medical care panel proposed under the Obama Outline (he’s not proposed a bill) and HR 3200 is patterned after the Oregon model, which was instituted for the sole purpose of saving money. Listen to what dems (Reich, Obama, Pelosi, Reid et al) are saying – if a procedure cannot be amortized easily for the rest of your projected life span, you will not receive the procedure/care.
I was a liberal until I learned to read, got a job and was mugged by willful tax and spend regressives (aka progressives) and naive acolytes.

redneck_hippie (Diary) Sunday, October 18th at 10:50AM EST (link)All the time that big insurance was sidling up to the Obama/Dems, I had a sick feeling that we were sliding into a fascist nightmare. I didn’t expect it to take so long for B.I. to realize The One was going to put them all out of business. Insurance is all about measuring and ameliorating risk, and they must have been hedging. Once health insurance is nationalized, The One will not be writing out trillion dollar bailout checks for B.I.
Keep it up, Barack. The veil is being lifted.
