I had occasion to stop overnight in Lordsburg a few months ago. Very run-down, quiet, and depressed-looking. It startled and saddened me (especially as a fan of the original &quot;Stagecoach&quot;) to see how blighted much of that corner of New Mexico appeared (I traveled through Deming the next morning, where things looked about as bad). By a roadside in Lordsburg a ragged billboard stood; a leftover from the election, it had been affixed with crude, handmade lettering exhorting passersby to &quot;VOTE DEMOCRATIC&quot;. Figured.</description>
