Let me explain what happened here to President Obama with regard to the Olympic bid.
One has to make a distinction between the people of the world, and the governments of the world. The people of the world generally like the USA/Americans/the concept of America for one or more of the following reasons:
- Because we are free;
- Because we are vulgar;
- Because we are loud;
- And because we visibly do not care if anybody likes that or not.
Meanwhile, most national governments do not like the USA/Americans/the concept of America for one or more of the following reasons:
- Because we are free;
- Because we are vulgar;
- Because we are loud;
- And because we visibly do not care if anybody likes that or not.
So, when the President went to the IOC to get this valuable thing for his home city and country, I’m sure that he thought that he would be able to remedy the situation. But all that he did was make it clear to people who don’t like us very much – mostly for the ‘vulgar’ and ‘loud’ bits – that he and the USA could be quite gratifyingly (to them) snubbed. So they did. And they enjoyed doing it, because they know that there’s damned little that the USA can do to them about it.
Personally, I’m grateful: this is an incredibly cheap lesson in Foreign Relations 120: Why we don’t have better relations with certain countries. It is my sincere hope that the President take the hint, and stop worrying quite so much about our overseas reputation. And by ‘stop worrying quite as much’ I mean ‘visibly do not care.’

PS: There are quite a few governments that do not hate us, of course. Unfortunately, these days one thing that they mostly have in common is in having been snubbed by this administration. It’d be great if that stopped happening.

farstar99 (Diary) Saturday, October 3rd at 2:05AM EST (link)Can we please, please, PLEASE use that picture of the Obambis standing in front of the Olympic rings, with their heads hung in shame for everything? And I mean even when it’s totally unnecessary and beside the point?
The meme would help assure defeat for him in 2012.

I heard Jesse Jackson on Rush today,
blooch Friday, October 2nd at 1:48PM EST (link)and he sounded like he was on the verge of calling for an investigation into the voting. That would be just great, Jesse. Chicago gets the axe in the first round, and you want to be a vindictive sore loser? I would say that cooler heads will prevail and just accept loss gracefully, but a certain Someone doesn’t know when to quit lost causes and stay the course in winnable ones.
As Juan Antonio Samaranch might say, “This has been an exceptional Olympic bid by Chicago.”
Here’s hoping that’s the end of it.

jeannieology (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 2:03PM EST (link)You thought the Olympics are represented by Oprah who couldn’t make it 1/8th of the way around a track?
That alone would make me vote against Chicago!
I mean sweet Jesus – Michelle and Oprah poster girls for the Olympics…Rio, Rio – Madrid … anything but that!

There's not anything the US can do about it
drothgery Friday, October 2nd at 3:07PM EST (link)… but I’m sure NBC did not sign up for five consecutive non-US summer Olympics when they extended their rights to the Games a few years ago. I half-think the director of NBC Sports got on the phone with the IOC chairman after Rio was announced and said “You’ve had your fun. LA 2020 or we walk.”.
Rio is PERFECT for NBC
David Hinz (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 3:11PM EST (link)we don’t have those funky time zone problems we have with Tokyo or Madrid — what — one hour early? Piece of cake.
And the people attending the Rio games will have one heck of a lot nicer time in Rio than they would ever have had in Chicago…

Pomme (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 9:23PM EST (link)If they can’t control the crime rate in Chicago now, why would they expect the IOC to willingly place that many more people in that mess?

Yeah, before people bitch about Chicago not getting the Olympics
Leopard1996 (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 3:17PM EST (link)You need to look at a few things.
1. The tri-athalon. Where would they do the swimming part of that, Let’s see Lake Michigan, or the beaches of Rio. I know where I would pick.
2. Maybe if the murder rate wasn’t so damn high, the IOC would have felt safe to have the Olympics there.
And to agree with Moe, this should be a harsh lesson to Obama, that the world as a whole does not care who is at the head of the U.S. as long as the U.S is seen as the superpower, we are going to get a case of the ass from the rest of the world. Which means that we need to work toward our self interest in foreign affairs and nothing else.
Just like the mob boss in The Bronx Tale, I would rather be respected than liked, and if I have to choose between being respected and being feared, I would rather have feared.

I would rather be respected
Raven (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 3:42PM EST (link)But will settle for feared.
As the Romans said once upon a time:

I probably blew that quote a little bit.

baldego Friday, October 2nd at 4:17PM EST (link)You don’t really think Rio is safer than Chicago, do you?
Now just hearing things probably not
Leopard1996 (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 6:12PM EST (link)Oh well, still no sympathy for Obama, nor for the corrupt IOC.

Merrie16 Friday, October 2nd at 3:51PM EST (link)that Chicago wasn’t chosen. 50% of the people in Chicago didn’t want it anyway. And I don’t feel that the U.S. was snubbed. I feel that Obama/Michelle/Oprah were snubbed, which makes me happy.
Inventive spin on why this was GOOD for Obama from Newsweek
Jack_Savage (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 4:10PM EST (link)Katie Connoly writes that if things had gone poorly in Chicago, Obama would have been tied to the fiasco, while not noting that the Olympics would have been held, if all goes Obama’s way, at the end of his second term, and four years after the election of 2012.
What a complete idiot.
Bearing that in mind, some quotes:
“Olympics-related screw-ups may have no concrete bearing on Obama’s capacity to govern, but they do make easy campaign ads. It’s not hard to imagine attack ads tying whatever planning ineptitude that was making news back to the White House. And while most voters outside of Chicago wouldn’t care all that much, such issues provide an unwanted distraction for the White House.”
And:
“This is a tad humiliating for the president, but his embarrassment will be short-lived, especially if he demonstrates some good humor about it. Republicans will probably criticize him for skipping the country for a day instead of focusing on Iran or Afghanistan, but those attacks won’t stick. He wasn’t even gone 24 hours, and General McChrystal joined him on Air Force One. This will be fodder for late-night comedians and talk-back radio for a day or two. But winning the Olympics could have bogged down his entire presidency.”
Again, sweetie, the Chicago Olympics were to be held in 2016. Not very sharp knives in the Newsweek drawer it seems.
They're fishing hard for the McChrystal tie in
kowalski (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 6:42PM EST (link)All around the country right now the Damage Control mechanisms are working feverishly. Rush predicted the McChrystal tie-in today, to try and distract from the crushing defeat Obama was handed … by his own handlers, who are now in full Reverse Spin Damage Control Mode.
I have a running bet with my father that one of two things will happen by tomorrow:
1) [Which I consider more likely]: The entire fiasco will be off the front pages and newspapers around the country will be licking Obama’s wounds by telling him to buck up and get back to doing such a great job of governing the United States.
2) [Which my father considers likely]: People at Newsweek will do what Rush Limbaugh said and try to rope McChrystal on Air Force One as being evidence that this fiasco was actually productive for Team Obama.
They’re going to have a lot of column inches to rewrite if they try #2, which is why I consider #1, burying the story entirely as quickly as possible, much more likely.
I also doubt that McChrystal wants to be a party to the damage control / reverse spin effort, and if Obama tries to pull him into this after his enormously embarrassing mistake, it’s another reason the guy should be impeached.

Re: Scenario 2,
blooch Friday, October 2nd at 10:05PM EST (link)What is the win for Obama in having McChrystal on Airbus One, other than proving that he can sit in a confined space with the General without soiling himself? Of course, Obama will have his team to protect him. I wonder who on McChrystal’s staff was allowed on the plane. It seems like there’s a Hollywood contrivance at work here: The one where the hero is ushered into the Limo, and “The Way It Works” is explained to him.
McChrystal is not going to get any answers on this plane ride, just a promise to talk some more later if the General makes happy noises when he gets off the plane. I guess this would be your trigger for McChrystal resign sometime soon?

“Obama had originally planned not to go but changed his mind when it was clear that other leaders wanting their countries to host the 2016 Games would be there.”
Criminy what a complete doofus. He wouldn’t know leadership if it bit him on the abs.
The ’84 L.A. Summer Olympics made a huge profit and was by all measures an unprecedented success. This is by far the exception to the rule; usually it is a hideous, endless burden on the taxpayers. Peter Ueberroth was an organizing genius and capitalist hero.
I was living there then – a lot of Angelenos left town, there was NO traffic, the weather suddenly got perfect and it was a simply spectacular 2 weeks. Except for the nutjob who ran over some people in Westwood Village (my stomping grounds) the Friday evening before the opening ceremonies.
Capitalism being the huge bugaboo it is now, the likelihood of that happening again (especially here in the United Socialist States of America) is pretty much nil. Rio kind of sounds like fun – might have to break my recent boycott of the Olympics.
Government cannot be the solution when government is the problem.

The problem with using Oprah Winfrey as the 'Secret Weapon'
kowalski (Diary) Friday, October 2nd at 7:03PM EST (link)Is that it’s a little like trying to use a battering ram to crack an egg: it’s not a secret that you’re employing much, much too heavy an implement to do the job. That’s the way politics works in Chicago and Obama’s people (since he is surrounded by them) cannot advise him competently as a result.
I think the real story of this whole mess is that Obama tried much, much too hard by allowing Winfrey and then himself to be brought into it.
