Obama retreats from fight on ‘public option.’

I wonder what else he’s planning to give up?

Aides to President Barack Obama are putting the final touches on a new strategy to help Democrats recover from a brutal August recess by specifying what Obama wants to see in a compromise health care deal and directly confronting other trouble spots, West Wing officials tell POLITICO.

Obama is considering detailing his health-care demands in a major speech as soon as next week, when Congress returns from the August recess. And although House leaders have said their members will demand the inclusion of a public insurance option, Obama has no plans to insist on it himself, the officials said.

“We’re entering a new season,” senior adviser David Axelrod said in a telephone interview. “It’s time to synthesize and harmonize these strands and get this done. We’re confident that we can do that. But obviously it is a different phase. We’re going to approach it in a different way. The president is going to be very active.”

(H/T: Drudge) I look forward to seeing whatever plan the President’s committee of aides put together for him to push on Congress, of course. It’ll almost certainly be a platitudinous, amorphous piece of stitched-together fluff that will satisfy nobody and lecture everyone on the planet – at least, based on past experience – but at least we’ll finally have gotten the White House to actually think about and discuss what changes in health care policy the executive branch would like to see. Letting the liberal Democratic leadership in Congress do it for the President was a serious error: it’s about time that he puts his personal stamp on an actual, ‘official’ plan. In other words: it’s nice that the administration is finally taking health care reform seriously, and we look forward to seeing its tentative plan.

After we hack out all the bits of said plan that are just stupid, of course.  And make sure that various concessions are made.

Hey Moe,

what makes you think his plan is gonna be any different ?

The only ones who can kill, are those who are prepared to be killed.

Because I don't think that he actually has one.

They’re writing his plan now, and it will almost certainly be written with one eye on the polling data and the other one on the base’s collective blood pressure.

Should be fun.

I hope that guy can keep himself out of his maverick moments.

I also hope there are no death panels. And there is no “driving private Insurers out” strategy. And it doesn’t add to federal deficit. Mostly because it won’t be fun ripping apart the new plan with same arguments.

The point of health care reform

briann (Diary) Tuesday, September 1st at 11:45PM EST (link)

Let’s not miss what the point of this whole thing is. If the left were so concerned about people doing without, they would give some of their own money to charity.

This is about bringing a sizeable chunk (15%? 20%?) of the economy and the entire population’s medical service (don’t vote the right way? your cat scan will take longer) under one party’s control.

There may not be a “public option” per se, but there will be some way to force everyone onto government paid heath insurance. There are too many union jobs and campaign contributions riding on it.

Obama has so thoroughly mucked up the health care fight and so completely debased whatever credibility he might have had that he doesn’t deserve any Republican support.

The Republicans should present him with a list of demands and require he accept them in toto – or get no GOP support in either house. They’ve made all the noises about shutting Republicans out of the debate; so let them choke on it.

Make the Constitutional argument

DerKrieger (Diary) Wednesday, September 2nd at 12:08AM EST (link)

The federal government does NOT have the Constitutional authority to establish a national health care plan or otherwise be involved in the delivery of health care. While it is a useful exercise to take the current Democrat bills apart in order to expose the socialism of the Left, the argument ought to be moot simply because the federal government lacks the Constitutional authority to pass a bill that does anything other than reduce the federal government’s role in health care.

The GOP ought to be out making the Constitutional argument and publicly challenging the Democrats to cite the Constitutional source for their collectivist plans.

“In questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.” – Thomas Jefferson

“I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.” – James Madison

Whenever the legislators endeavor to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people, who are thereupon absolved from any further obedience.” — John Locke, 1690

I agree, there's nothing salvagable in this bill

clowngirl (Diary) Wednesday, September 2nd at 2:39AM EST (link)

It should be attacked on Constitutional grounds and Republicans should propose an alternative plan that would actually work.

No public option
No mandates
No community rating
No death panels
No insurance for illegal aliens
No covering abortions

More options
Less regulations
Some form of safety net for those who have no care
Lower cost policies like catastrophe insurance

I don’t think even the RINOs will jump for cosmetic changes. They’ve had months to pick them off.

I think removing the public option may well cause it to fall apart.

this has been floated, I have to believe this is more than a rumor at this point. If it is, he’ll blow a lot what little credibility he has left at this point by waffling back and forth on such a big issue. In any event, the news prompted this analysis that it might be a shrewd move personally, but it leaves the Congressional Democrats with no clear direction in which to move.

I think with Obama calling the White cop stupid a month or two ago, that it jarred those people who were under the illusion that he wasn’t an Al Sharpton wanna be.

I think that triggered something in everyone’s brain and the “trust” in him just completely eroded… then combine that with the utterly disrespectful way the Democrats insulted the Townhallers… the Democrats and Obama have completely blown their cover.

I dont think there is anything they could say or do that is going to enable them to recover from this. The only people vulnerable to be misled again are the idiot Republicans in Congress

But isn't there a public option already?

themississippideacon (Diary) Wednesday, September 2nd at 3:08PM EST (link)

It’s just that it only applies to a certain socio-economic % of our population. It’s perfect for the dem’s in that it’s free, and it’s income based. That means conservatives can’t participate because we have “surplus” income.

Look it, healthcare is broken. Last year we finally paid off the portion of our medical bills that weren’t covered by insurance from 5 years prior. It only takes one bad year and bam!!

Take this past year. Finally out of hospital/doctor debt and one bad year put us even worse off than we were the first time. I’m beginning to believe I’ll pay doctors and hospital bills until I die.

If real change is to take place, it will have to be on multi fronts in health care:

1. Set a standard for what a procedure costs, regardless of insurance. Example, if you call today for an MRI or specialist care and ask them for the cost of the procedure, they will ask, “do you have insurance?”. There are different prices for each, cash or insurance. And it varies from facility to facility.
2. Get rid of bad doctors. If a drunk driver is repeatedly offending, he/she loses their liscense. Why, because the liability is to great and the state could be sued for not keeping this person out of a car. What makes doctors any different? Should they all be made to pay high premiums for those that continually botch things? No different than my insurance rates going up because people choose to live in a huricane prone area. (That’s a whole nother story).
3. Here’s a novel idea, pay them like they’re paid in India. They (according to my Indian friends) are paid the same as other professionals, so comparatively they make a descent living, but they don’t look like Donald trumps.(Not all doctors are this way, making a point here).
4. If you don’t like that idea, how about this one: The NDL, the National Doctors League. Let each state build their own “team” with salary caps and the whole nine yards. Then, people will go to the states A. where they can afford healthcare, or B. where the best doctors are, or C. somewhere in the middle.
