Now that I may comment: former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has endorsed Michael Williams for Kay Bailey Hutchison’s soon-vacant Senate seat. It’s a strong endorsement, too (that link also leads to contribution information):
Having been a part of the last effort to retake the congressional majority, I am convinced we don’t have to wait 40 years this time to regain power. Democrats in Congress offer the same old, tired recipe of Democrats past — big government hand-outs, bloated bureaucracy and big-time deficit spending.
The kind of change they offer is simply a return to the discarded practices of the pre-Reagan era.
Our problem is not Americans are newly attracted to Democrat ideas, but that Republicans simply failed to live up to their own ideas.
Let me illustrate my point this way: while conservatives continue to embrace the conservative label, liberals have been re-marketing themselves as progressives. You can call a used car pre-owned all you want, but I will be just as worried about the engine going out.
We do not need to change our ideas, we need to live up to them. And when I talk about modernizing the Republican brand, I mean using tried and true Republicans principles in new ways to solve new problems.
The key to building a new Republican Majority is not simply branding Democrat policies as the destructive and discredited ideas of the past…but offering real alternatives that meet Americans where they are. And offering new leaders not bogged down by the old fights of the last decade.
We need conservatives willing to engage the Democrats on the field of ideas…willing to speak of a 21st Century conservatism…willing to stand and fight on principle. We need leaders like Michael Williams.
The full endorsement is at Michael’s site. And, obviously, I agree.

Full disclosure: I am in regular contact with the Michael Williams campaign, and I endorse him as a replacement to Senator Hutchison, once she resigns her Senate seat.

Not a fan of Newt particularly...
William_L Tuesday, August 25th at 11:04AM EST (link)… but a big fan of Mr Williams.. Could we finally be rid of KBH?
Good news for America, bad news for democrats
Bad news for America, good news for democrats
so the next question is what will the NRSC do?
Justin Spagnolo (standardcandle) (Diary) Tuesday, August 25th at 12:31PM EST (link)Granted… they have time before taking any position on this… but
Do we expect them to get behind Williams? Or is there bad blood between him and Cornyn from 2007?

If Cornyn is Against Him....
rcov092 (Diary) Tuesday, August 25th at 12:37PM EST (link)I am definitely for him. I lost all respect for Cornyn when he stuck his nose where it did not belong in the Florida Senate Primary.

exactly my point...
Justin Spagnolo (standardcandle) (Diary) Tuesday, August 25th at 1:35PM EST (link)It would be nice to get ahead of their announcement and put a lot of conservative pressure behind it… so they don’t pull the same stunt as they did with Crist/Rubio…

Headline typo alert: "Gingrich"
Finrod (Diary) Tuesday, August 25th at 12:48PM EST (link)Excellent article, appreciate the good news. Conservative Republicans need to stick up for each other.
Let’s get down to brass tacks here. How much for the ape?

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Tuesday, August 25th at 2:05PM EST (link)You might offer that he put up a new pic on his website. It’s kind of funny, but he may look a little ridiculous to people checking him out for the first time, seeing that he’s holding a giant piece of ham.
Funny, but a little too offbeat.
Michael Williams on Illegal Immigration
publiussteve Tuesday, August 25th at 2:15PM EST (link)I read the part on his website about immigration, and overall it’s not too bad at least on the surface. But I don’t like the clause about securing the border “first.” He should support securing the border “period” — with vigorous enforcement of our existing immigration laws, support of E-Verify, 287(g), no match” letters, and completion of the real double-layered Duncan Hunter fence.
I also hope Mr. Williams supports not only going after employers of illegal aliens (a good thing), but also the removal of many if not most of the 7-8 million illegal alien workers from their illegal jobs — which would free up these jobs for unemployed Americans.
The goal should be to reduce the illegal population over time through attrition/enforcement of our laws — to help protect taxpayers and American workers.
Finally, I hope Mr. William opposes “comprehensive immigration reform” or any “paths to citizenship” which we all know are euphemisms for mass amnesty.
No, I'd say he gets that one correct.
The_Gadfly (Diary) Tuesday, August 25th at 7:45PM EST (link)We secure the border first, then see what else needs to be done. First you secure the border, then you go after the companies employing illegals. Until the border is secure, the other actions are like bailing water from the stern to the bow compartments, you keep losing ground no matter how fast you work. I too am dubious of any comprehensive immigration reform or alternate pathways to citizenship, but I will allow that after we have secured the border and stepped up enforcement against employers (along with making it more reliable and efficient for them to confirm legality), it might be necessary to raise immigration quotas and streamline the legal process to bring legal immigrants into the country. But the emphasis is on LEGAL immigrants, not normalizing illegal ones.
Nope, secure the border period.
publiussteve Tuesday, August 25th at 11:28PM EST (link)The problem with the “secure the border first” line is what comes after this. As we knew and know with McCain and other amnesty proponents, “what else needs to be done” means… (drum roll) amnesty — after claims of a secure border (which Napolitano is already starting to claim). Securing the border period is (or should be) a no brainer, and should have been done years ago or at least after 9/11. Just do it now — with no conditions.
In terms of legal immigration, we are already extremely generous admitting over 1 million (legal) immigrants per year. For many good reasons, it’s time to seriously consider reducing this number to pre-1965 levels. We should have a compassionate and welcoming immigration policy based on our country’s needs (not based on family reunification/chain migration) — albeit at reduced numbers.
Like the first poster, I find Newt's endorsement
The_Gadfly (Diary) Tuesday, August 25th at 7:37PM EST (link)to be of dubious value as a conservative. But having had the chance to listen to Micheal Williams speak at the Red State convention, I’m all for any news that gets people to look at him as a candidate. He reminds me of only one other politician who has had the national stage in my lifetime: Ronald Wilson Reagan. Which means that once people actually see Micheal Williams in action, he’s going nowhere but up. He’s a positive, patriotic, warm and uplifting leader who believes in the ability of Americans to overcome any obstacles.
