PPP: McDonnell/Deeds 51/37.

Looks like Obama\'s campaign schedule is pretty much clear for the rest of the year.

[UPDATE] Gah!  It’s like a glitch in my brain.  McDonnell, McDonnell, McDonnell.

That was the response of one of my colleagues from the news that McDonnell has taken a commanding lead in the VA race (and the news that Christie continues to dominate Corzine); while there’s still three months to go before the election, and while Deeds did win the primary despite being the underdog, these numbers aren’t good for the Democrats  They are also roughly similar to last weeks SurveyUSA poll, which PPP itself notes:

The problem is all in who’s motivated and planning to turn out- McCain supporters are at a considerably higher rate than Obama’s, and that means a healthy McDonnell lead.

Last week I was skeptical of SurveyUSA’s poll showing an electorate that voted for John McCain 52-43…but we actually found it at a 52-41 McCain advantage.

None of this should be surprising: it’s an off-election year, the President will not be on the ticket, the economy is widely and accurately considered to be awful, and the current ruling parties of both states are widely and accurately seen to be part of the problem.  Deed’s specific problem is that he got the nomination by not being Moran or McAuliffe… which wouldn’t have been a problem at all if the VA GOP hadn’t decided to run somebody credible.  But the VA GOP did, and now comes the unseemly scramble on the Democrats’ side to hold the governorship.

The real question is whether the President is going to go all in with the rescue efforts – or, indeed, meaningfully assist at all.  Either he will, or won’t; either it’ll help, or it won’t.  The problem is that… let me block this out.

  • President assists Deeds; Deeds wins.  The President gets modest credit for preserving the seat. He has fulfilled expectations.
  • President assists Deeds; Deeds loses. The President takes significant blame for losing the seat. As this would not fulfill expectations, a ‘reason’ will be found to explain loss that will ‘show’ a blunder on the President’s part.
  • President does not assist Deeds; Deeds wins. The President gets modest credit for not panicking in this situation. He has fulfilled expectations.
  • President does not assist Deeds; Deeds loses. The President may get modest blame for not assisting more. Expectations may be (in this case alone) managed after the fact.

In other words: looking that over, I don’t see where intervening in this race particularly helps the President – at least, where it particularly helps the President enough to make the consequences of failure a risk worth taking. And as anybody who watched the Chambliss/Martin runoff election last year knows, the current administration is exceptionally cautious about that sort of thing.

1. That SUSA found pretty similar numbers
2. That PPP is a Democratic polling company
3. That you still are getting McDonnells name wrong

Nancy Pelosi can kiss my asstroturf.

Tell me about it.

and is attorney general candidate has likewise good numbers over Steve Shannon 45/32. Bill Bolling, our candidate for Lt. governor, also has nice numbers over Jody Wagner 48/39. Follow Moe’s link above, very interesting reading PPP’s analysis of the poll data.

Moe, just wanted to let you know we enjoyed meeting you at the gathering and how much we appreciate your hard work.

Another point to consider is that Cuccinelli

The_Gadfly (Diary) Tuesday, August 4th at 3:27PM EST (link)

has won three terms in a Democratic district. He credits that to consistently being honest with voters about his beliefs and plans for his office, and then following through with them. If McDonell follows that form, he is likely to see the same sort of support Cuccinelli has received. People don’t like Obamacare or the Great Carbon Tax Hike, and that’s a bipartisan dislike. Yeah, it might not be a governor’s issue, but the smelly stuff rolls downhill just like the good stuff does.

Gadfly, here in Va. McDonnell has a good reputation.

My husband and I actually knew him personally outside of politics, but he is well thought of. He is also strong on family values. I think in general, he is known for his good character. So, between Cuccinelli who also has an excellent reputation and Bob and I believe Bolling-all three represent a strong ticket for us here in Virginia.

Now if we could just do something about the Congressional seats that turned “blue” this last election. I am in VA-02, Glenn Nye, we are watching his votes closely. Still have not seen any scheduled townhalls for him. We plan to be there when they happen.

Yep, I can attest to that...

…I was a staffer on a Congressional campaign in VA last year — McDonnell is solid. He’s not without some minor nitpicky issues, but he’s a solid candidate, and well worth the support.

The ‘roots are out for Cuccinelli, though. He is flat-out beloved in the Valley.

I have no idea why I thought you were a he. Yeahhhh we need some estrogen here at Redstate to balance the Testesterone Zone. LOL

McDonnell and Cucinelli will win big time. I don’t know as much about Bolling, but, his polling numbers look good. Stixxandstones has it exactly right about Cuccinelli, he is well liked by many, even the Liberatarians. I’ve heard some date announced when Obama is coming to VA to stump for Deeds. As to Moe’s what if list above, it will be a big mistake. I recently read somewhere that Obama is now favored by only by 44% in VA. With the unpopularity of Obamacare those numbers will only go down. That stumping will only be like Bush stumping for McCain.

Cantor is my rep in Dist. 7. I am out to replace Perriello in the 5th which I could throw a rock to from my front porch. Other diaries here today are talking about the WH search for informants. They are behind Perriello. At a Townhall event (on private property) a few weeks ago, the police asked some Tea Party organizers to leave. They were standing outside the gates holding signs asking Periello not to support Obamacare. They drove to a local restaurant, and, watched a plainclothes cop come and call their license plate numbers in. The next day they were visited at their homes by the State Police. They wanted lists of names of the people they were there with. Now Perriello’s Townhalls are being held inside, and, you must sign up to enter. There is one just a few miles from me on Aug. 10, and, my husband and I will be there. That should prove interesting.

the Silent Majority. Mainstream America is still center right and now they are hearing from them and they don’t like it. Hiding behind gates and walls, will only serve to stir up the countryside further. Spreading the word through civic leagues, school associations, church and synagogues, and all other informal networking means, to get the people out. If they won’t let us in the meetings, their devious behavior will be their downfall. It is obvious that they are not fooling the people, if they go on trying to fool themselves, well then they’ll be out of office.

It has been incredible to hear how they are describing the people at the townhall meetings. I’ve seen the clips. All ages, but many elderly and the left is calling these people “threats”?

Yes, I am a she. Nice to meet you.

Perriello must be voted out.

teresava Tuesday, August 4th at 7:52PM EST (link)

I am a Perriello constituent, and he will be in my county on Sat. I don’t like the way he is handling the Townhall meetings. We should not have to sign-in and wait to address our elected representative. The meeting is from 11am to 1pm “first come, first serve.” My county is very conservative, and I hope many voters will show up to air their grievances. I doubt that everyone will get a chance to speak to him. He will probably pick the constituents who want his assistance for a government program and everyone else, i.e. those who oppose government healthcare, will be shut out.

I heard about the Danville incident. On July 17, Perriello’s staff dispatched the police when the Charlottesville Tea Party showed up to protest gov. healthcare.

But, you know, Moe – I only do this kind of thing because I care. :)
