CA Senate President Darrell Steinberg (D) declares Californian independence.

I\'m shocked that Josh Trevino buried the lede.

It was, what? All of twenty seconds in?

MODERATOR: Let’s go to our next e-mail question. Adrian from Sacramento: To save money, legislators need to go part time. If other states can do this, why can’t we?

STEINBERG: Want me to take that?

LENO: You start off, I’ll –

STEINBERG: Okay. You know, um, I disagree with the premise of, uh, the question. California is a nation-state.

OK, yeah. Stop right there. The question at hand is whether California needs a full-time legislature; and the fact that the one that the state currently has is apparently capable of electing to lead it somebody who’d fail Civics 090 pretty much resolves that particular question, once and for all. I’d suggest that Mr. Steinberg go back to his previous career: but no, he’s pretty much been a politico from the start. Ditch digging, maybe?

Texas has the 8th largest economy in the World

izoneguy (Diary) Friday, July 10th at 10:50PM EST (link)

And our legislators are part time. They only meet every other year.

The constitutional design of the legislative branch and the political history of Texas have combined to make “the lege,” as insiders and observers call it, a peculiar institution. The Texas Constitution creates a part-time legislature that meets for a relatively brief 140 days every other year. The members, so-called citizen legislators, work within a political culture with a strong suspicion of government and a long history of accepting the involvement of wealthy business interests in politics.

So STEINBERG is full of it…..

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Oh no...I couldn't POSSIBLY

Work for free? After all, I mean show some appreciation! Look at what all the Democrats have done for California? I mean, they worked hard trying to find a budget fix as the crash came closer and closer.

On the subject of working for free, The 7th largest city in the nation has Council men/women and mayor that work for free

and it’s been that way for years. I’ve always wondered what elected officials would do if they didn’t get paid(or if you like, less than $7,000).

California needs to be broken up

And multiply us in the Senate?

Neil Stevens (Diary) Saturday, July 11th at 1:37AM EST (link)

I can see splitting into a coastal and an interior state, but not more than that.

I was thinking of

the opportunity to empower the more conservative areas of the state that get swamped by San Fan and LA. The liberal states would have less power in the house and the senate would have not just two liberal senators, but likely some conservatives senators as well, maybe even more than the liberals.

No, no they wouldn't

Neil Stevens (Diary) Saturday, July 11th at 1:44AM EST (link)

If you split the coast at all, especially the two big population centers (LA County and the SF Bay), then those areas would dominate the states they were in.

Yes, but then...

Britcom (Diary) Saturday, July 11th at 1:47AM EST (link)

have them out numbered by the other new states.

For example...

Britcom (Diary) Saturday, July 11th at 1:51AM EST (link)

on the east coast, NYC is balanced (well used to be until everyone moved to FL) by the the Upstate region which is more Republican.

If you create a SF state that expands as it moves inland (like NY does) the rural area would balance the urban area.

California isn't that balanced

Neil Stevens (Diary) Saturday, July 11th at 2:00AM EST (link)

I mean, it would really only work for *us* if you made two coastal states and several inland states, I’m talking 2-3 House seats each.

Last statewide election that went well for us was 1994, and that was brought on by a confluence of factors:

- Democrat running for Governor on the Brown name
- Republican who ran *hard* on illegal immigration
- Ballot measure also driving that issue
- National issues depressing Democrats

And note that it was a pro-abort Republican

Neil Stevens (Diary) Saturday, July 11th at 2:01AM EST (link)

So we didn’t even have that going for us.

Hmm. Yes, a problem there.

and I’m east of Oakland, a safe distance from Berkeley (CA11) and I do not want to be part of SF, thank you very much. If I could be a part of a red state with this really nice weather and 2 major league ball clubs, life would be good.
