BREAKING: Militia fires on Iranian protestors.

@jaketapper

AP News alert FROM IRAN: AP photographer sees pro-government militia fire at opposition protesters, killing at least 1.

And if this is true:

@StopAhmadi (via AoSHQ)

The Basiji police that killed 4 ppl in Tehran got killed by the ppl! eye for an eye! #iranelection

…we’re now at the cusp of something. If the crowds start thinking that the militia are going to shoot at them anyway – well, they stop being ‘crowds,’ and become the Mob.

No, that is not good. The whole point of having a Velvet Revolution is to avoid waking up the Mob.

PS: Jules Crittenden has put together a roundup of some of the reactions to the Iranian situation in general.

PPS: Via @magnolia_tree (her website, btw), these pictures. Whoa.

Opportunity missed...

The president should have stated we stand with the people of Iran who want democracy and freedom…… opportunity missed.

Why Would He Do That?! He Doesn't Believe In It Himself!!

Despite Obama & The Dems mouthing pretty words about democracy and “every vote counting”, they don’t believe a word of it.

The reason Obama & co. don’t speak up is because they *don’t* want Iran to become more like The U.S. – they want to make The U.S. into something more resembling *Iran* (or Cuba, or [shudder] possibly even North Korea or Burma).

Those are some powerful pictures...

all I can say is that I don’t see a downside to Iranians killing Iranians. We’re living in a dream world if we think Ahmadinejad is going to give up power. The best we can hope for is that there are plenty of injuries and lots of long memories.

Besides, on some level, I *like* “The Mob” – it leads to heedless killing, and that’s exactly what a regime like Iran’s deserves to suffer…

(And, bottom line – you can never rule out the possibility that Ahmadinejad & the Mullahs actually get toppled from power in a situation like this…)

Sadly, there may be no other way

I just don’t see Ahmadinejad and his goon squads giving up without a fight – I believe they are plenty willing to kill their own countrymen to preserve their own power. Unless the army comes out against him only the people can fight back.

I doubt the Army would go against the Revolutionary Guards. And, after watching video from Iran, the police, militia and the Rev. Guards would have no trouble at all, firing on their fellow citizens whenever and wherever they were told to do so.

Khomeini’s tomb is a really big deal there, graves are a big deal in Islam too. M said a really powerful thing when he threatened that sit in.. It’s like saying we will sit in on well I don’t even know what would be just as sacred here. Whatever happens he will certainly be applauded as a leader. I disagree with his beliefs about America obviously and I’m not saying he is an ok person but I think it’s beautiful the way he threatened with civil demonstration the way he did.

Just wanted to add that even the area where it’s located is a big deal too, it’s called Gnome but it’s more like an h sound not g. I don’t know what to compare it to here though. I’m just trying to show how significant his threat to sit in there was.

Dictators share notes

red4ever (Diary) Monday, June 15th at 4:53PM EST (link)

Monica Crowley made the point on her radio show. The iranian dictators learned from the Chinese dictators that you fire on the demonstrators early and often to stop the democracy movement cold.

I want to believe that the people who are demonstrating want freedom, not just an exchange of fundamentalist dictators. As believers in democracy, we owe it to them to support them. Even if our own administration does not.
