While Jon Henke is correct – at this time the Carter Center remains completely silent regarding yesterday’s Iranian election fraud – the former President has made a statement on the topic. One that is incompatible with any stance that considers what’s happening over there to be election fraud.
Carter said US policy would remain the same “because the same person will be there” in brief remarks after he met Palestinian officials in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
[snip]
Carter — who was president during Iran’s 1979 revolution that toppled the US-backed shah and the hostage crisis that followed — said the strength of the opposition during the campaign may push Ahmadinejad to “modify” his policies.
“I think this election brought a lot of opposition to his policy in Iran and I am sure he will listen to this opposition and may modify (it).”
If by “modify” one means “crack down on, violently attack, isolate (along with the rest of Iran) from the rest of the universe, and place under house arrest.” Which, knowing Carter, cannot be ruled out: he gets just a little less tolerant of people contradicting his narrative every year.

If only Democrats would learn ANYTHING from that time....
JLenardDetroit (Diary) Monday, June 15th at 1:32AM EST (link)The Ofspry is result of the need for aircraft shown to us from the failed Iranian Hostage Extract fiasco…. Yet Democrats look only as Defense items on a “what is only predictable use” needs rather than preparing for situations/conflict one does not see as an obvious threat/need immediately. Defense related “needs” are not “slow build up” oriented any longer – if an rapid response war situation escalates quickly, in the smaller world and quick delivery weapons, we may not have the luxury of isolating an enemy for awhile while we “retool and build up” like old WWII mentality – build it when you need it. Today, if you don’t have it before you need it your enemy is going to killing/destroying.
If one of the looney, crazy with no regard for their own citizens lives or their own, do decide to go homicidal they can do far too much damage in a short period of time. UN resolutions are not going to stop the loonies from marching their troops and lobbing missiles if they really feel “compelled” by Religious calling or even lasp gasps at holding their country together by creating trumped up external threats and warfare.
For all the Liberals’ whining about armor in Iraq/Afghanistan – it was lack of fore-thought and preparation for the Urban, close-quarters, IED street to street battles, and Defense cuts every Democrat administration leaves behind for any/all incoming Republican administrations [Surrender Doctrine (Democrats ALWAYS cut/weaken U.S.Defense)] as part of the unintended consequences of their governance that could/should be seen – but they just don’t care to ever see it.
We need the newer more flexible operational platforms, not less. If an actual new bigger conflict should ever come we may need to toss aside some of the technology and go for mass production of lessor equipment just to be able to get numbers into the Theater – the point is to AVOID that tragedy of countless unnecessary American lives lost because we wouldn’t be prepared!
You have to prepare for every environment and climate! Platforms that perform “reasonable” under as much potetntial changing adverse conditions as possible. If something ever were to blow up to the point of spilling into Europe, the Nuclear arsenal will be pretty much useless – doubtful we will have ANY President that will make the Truman decision to use that kind of force to destroy another Nation to terminate a conflict.
And yes…. I very much wandered off from where I’m sure Moe ever expected this Diary to go. Jimmy Carter and the bufoons again in charge now got me wound up.

JLD, looks like you nailed it...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Monday, June 15th at 4:06PM EST (link)Osprey V-22 is a VTOL and STOL aircraft. It was determined that due to the immense failure of Operation Eagle Claw a need arised for the capabilities of the V-22, you can still see the V-22 flying around DC from time to time. The program JVX program or V-22 Army, MV-22 USMC and CV-22 USAF was initiated in 1981 by the Army and the USMC took the lead on the program following. That is the basic jist of my knowledge on that program.
Now on to rapid equiping based on necessity. Yes, the armed forces are oriented now to fill the needs rapidly with the U.S. Armys Rapid Equiping Force or REF and the use of what is known as Urgent Needs Statements (UUNS) in the Marine Corps. The idea behind these types of requirements or urgent needs is to rapidly move to procure either commerical off the shelf/ Non-developmental Items COTS/NDI immediately or determine what is the current state of capability gaps then initiate a developmental program (infancy is Concept Dev, then Milestones A (Tech Dev. (TD)), B (Eng. Manu. Dev (EMD).) or C (LRIP, FRP or Prod. & Dev. and Ops. & Support) which is to fill the gap.
On to preparing for the environmental and conditions is a major part of the development of military technologies. There are standards (MIL-STD-810G) in place to test systems based on the conditions established in the requirements; however, it is advantageous to have the system able to operate in all environmental conditions.
You are completely right on this JLD, currently the Corps is prepared for both types of equiping the operation forces. We prepare for future conflicts with developmental programs that are based on previous conflicts and our current conflict (e.g. Non-Lethal Weapons) as well as equipping the forces with hardware to fill the gap as the needs are determined.
Yes the technologies need to be flexible and producable to fill both types of conflicts (small and large) IMO. Mass production of hardware is something that the Military has moved away from for large scaled wars because the idea of force multiplier has come into existence. In asymetrical warfare the force mutliplier is useless if you can not destroy things.
Now force multiplier wise, the F-22 is a majestic air fighter that is able to take out large squadrons of enemy aircraft like the MIG 29s; however the elimination of the F-22 for the XF-33 (JSF) (yes it is still developmental) is a huge blunder IMO. Drones will not be the answer for military conflicts in the near term because it is my belief that conducting counter insurgency operations with drones leads to misunderstandings between us and the non-combatants (i.e. Pakistan and Afghanistan).
All in all, whiney liberals set our weapons developmental programs backwards everytime they get control of the armed forces. They gut the budgets to advance social welfare programs, all the while our enemies catch up to us. When conflicts then arise it is a Republican president (as the recent 30 years have shown) to raise the military back to a force that can deal with these future conflicts. (i.e., Reagan 1981 & GWB 2001). Do not forget that the peace dividend had our forces training with rocks and sticks during the 90′s. The only good thing that Carter did for the military was give them a raise. Anyway, I guess I just went off topic as well, sorry Moe.

Somewhat in Carter’s defense: I lived in Georgia when Carter was Governor and knew him a little and knew his son Chip pretty well. Carter was a pretty effective reformist governor of a state that certainly needed reform in the early ’70s. Carter could only be called a liberal in the context of the antedeluvian politics of rural Georgia in those days. Those old enough will recall that “Jimmy” Carter was generally regarded as a rube by the NY/DC/LA elite and criticized viciously by the cool people. Nobody would have dared be as rude in those days as they are today, but he got about the same treatment by the elites that Sarah Palin gets by the standards of the day and for the same reason, Georgia just wasn’t one of the cool places.
I really believe that in response to his reception by the Beltway Elite, Carter became and remains obscessed with pleasing the liberal elites in the Country.

In other words, if the GOP had won the 2008 election, instead of Obama, and Iran was in this current state, what would be the conservative response? How would President McCain (or insert President “Conservative” here) handle this situation?
As governor, Romney made no similar effort to amend or repeal the state law, which required employers that purchase insurance plans in Massachusetts to pay for contraceptives.

Would a potential uprising be taking place in Iran without the example in Iraq?
Context and caffine are your friends George.
mbecker908 (Diary) Monday, June 15th at 8:31AM EST (link)Iraq was part of this discussion just where? The context of the comment was “Iran”, that other “I” country in the middle east. The question was, what would McCain do differently? To which I responded “not much” and added Frankly, Bush was just as feckless as Clinton. Republicans seem to be scared to death that someone will accuse them of not being for “peace”.
Now then, to make sure we are perfectly clear on Bush and the whole region…
1. Bush was right to name the Axis of Evil, namely Iraq, Iran and NoKo.
2. His execution into Afghanistan was flawless.
3. I agree with his decision to go into Iraq.
4. Damn him forever for not defending his foreign policy and standing up the Left. That was utterly feckless and may have destroyed our ability to respond militarily in the future.
5. Bush rightly pointed to the danger of a nuclear Iran and followed up by handing them over to the Euroweenies so they could negotiate with the Mullahs. At the same time, we had proof that the Iranians were supplying both arms and people to the terrorists in Iraq and GBW did exactly nothing about that. I call that feckless.
6. As long as we’re talking about the Axis of Evil, let’s recall the great job done by the Bush State Department getting them weaned away from nukes. Feckless George, feckless.
So, bottom line Bush set in place policies that will find Iraqis, and hopefully Afghanis living in democracy. Beyond that, his foreign policy was feckless and he was a first rate coward for not defending his correct policies against our domestic enemies.
Agree on 1-4
6eorge Jetson (Diary) Monday, June 15th at 9:36AM EST (link)As to 5 & 6
Until Paetreus was put in charge in 2007, we stumbled badly in Iraq. Regime change is not the bunny hill. Kudos to Paetreus for leading a stunning reversal of fortunes.
When we weren’t winning in Iraq, how could Bush have plausibly confronted Iran or N. Korea with the big stick? That’s before considering the lack of will of the American people for those actions.
In baseball, 1 for 3 (or one hit and two sacrifices) ain’t bad. It’s a pretty good showing in regime change, too.
Had the Dems been in charge, we’d be 0-for-3. (Source: countless statements from the Dems up through 2007).
With Bush, our adversaries had to consider whether we had the bandwidth and capability to respond. With Obama, the presumption has to be that the will and backbone is not there, even if the bandwidth is there.
I’ll join you in calling Bush feckless for not defending his foreign policy and standing up the Left,
It ain't baseball.
mbecker908 (Diary) Monday, June 15th at 10:46AM EST (link)It’s life and death. One hit and two sacrifices and we’ve got a Marxist running the country. Discussions about how bad the Dems would have been are pointless exercises, they weren’t, we were. We had no leadership and we blew it. Big time.
Bush turned Iran over to the Arabists in the State Department, Condi Rice was every bit as hollow as Colin Powell at State and Bush did zip. Bush turned NoKo over to god knows who, but did nothing to stop – or even slow – their nuclear progress. Show me any backbone or willinginess on the part of
CarterBush. Our adversaries had nothing to consider, he was busy in Iraq and wouldn’t fight the Dems, so why would he put up a fight against them. And he didn’t.Bush will go down as a terrible President. He’s our Carter. Hopefully, he’ll just retire and keep his mouth shut.
I'm not sure your question makes sense in the way you think it ought to.
The_Gadfly (Diary) Monday, June 15th at 1:44PM EST (link)Once the GOP gets to the spot that we are in now, the response options are about as limited as they are for The Big 0. I think more applicable question is: would McCain have arrived at the same point The Big 0 and his neo-Chamberlains have?
With the current team in the White House, you know ahead of time that there will not be any substantial response to human rights abuses in your own nation (unless of course you’re part of the either the 1st or 2nd worlds), so you pretty much have a free hand to do whatever you want to. While you still would have had 75-25 or better odds of McCain doing nothing, you’d still have to calculate on the chance that he would react in some substantial way. Once you are making those calculations, do you run election fraud as rampantly as they have? If you don’t run the fraud they way they did, would the election results be different?
I’ll be honest: I don’t know whether the Islamists would have changed their actions. But I think they’d at least have had to make those calculations, and there would have been a chance that the so-called moderate would have won (been engineered as the winner?) as a sop to the neo-Chamberlains in the internationalist organizations. Make no mistake, he would have been a friend, but the result might have been different. And that might open other different opportunities than will be open to The Big 0 as a result of this election.
The Rotunda Awaits.

They say Republicans are for the rich, Democrats are for the poor.
If they need more voters,
then they have to make more of who they are for.
We are there in the various Tea Party groups, leaderless, but not rudderless.

TNJim (Diary) Monday, June 15th at 12:17AM EST (link)kinda disconcerting to see just a name and no comment title in the comments column.
DTOM, weve been found out. Quick, hide.
gekster (Diary) Monday, June 15th at 12:29AM EST (link)I can understand that. I wanted to talk to mamma to say Hi, and be just us. She, like many, will check her comments she has made,
to see whats said and to reply to
Doesn’t everyone?.
If it be personel, as to be not for everyone, as saying hi aside from the subject, then this is kind of semi private.
You just have to find the comment on your own if you want to know, but why?.
Just not for everybody.

DONTREADONME (Diary) Monday, June 15th at 1:13AM EST (link)seriously, this will be my last comment with a hidden headline. Talk about accidentally finding that little loophole in the HTML code.

I see how you did it, now
TNJim (Diary) Monday, June 15th at 1:42AM EST (link)Gotta be careful where you place those little arrows. Apparently you put one in front of an “I” in your comment title then didn’t use the cancel code. HTML’s a funny beast that way. Just affects this diary. But, since I don’t have site access I can’t fix it.
Hey DTOM

Jimmy Carter, Expert on Iran
JustLeaveMeAlone (Diary) Sunday, June 14th at 11:31PM EST (link)Hahahahaha… yeah, let’s care what he thinks!
“To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.” Thomas Jefferson
Can we repeat this too often?
blh1976 (Diary) Monday, June 15th at 10:43AM EST (link)Carter was not only the most incompetent president in U.S. history, he has proven time and again to be the most incompetent ex-president in U.S. History.
Hey, but at least he builds houses with Habitat for Humanity! I guess that nullifies everything else.
Jimminie Carter and Iran stand as the loudest warnings
The_Gadfly (Diary) Monday, June 15th at 1:50PM EST (link)those of us who didn’t want to have to vote for McCain heeded during the general election. We are now 30 years after his presidency and still dealing with the disasterous mistakes he made. Although I still believe we will make it through the coming disasters of the current administration, we are just as likely to still be dealing with the consequences 30 years after he leaves office.
