Andrew Cuomo still not running for NY Governor.

If the last month should have done anything, it should have caused NY State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to at least re-evaluate his decision not to challenge current Governor David Paterson for the job.  Since then, Paterson’s numbers have stayed awful: 19% from Marist, 28% from Quinnipac, 18% from Siena.  The consensus is that Giuliani beats Paterson; Cuomo beats Paterson; and that Cuomo beats Giuliani.  The situation for Paterson is in fact so bad that his own consituents would rather have their old governor back right now, and their old governor has a name for liking to choke prostitutes*.

And yet, Cuomo won’t run.

Governor David Paterson won’t get challenge from Andrew Cuomo

Primary fights are great for Democrats, state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo asserts.

And no, he insisted again Sunday, he has no plans to challenge Gov. Paterson.

Either Cuomo really doesn’t want the job, or he’s quietly worried about any Democrat’s chances in 2010.  Given the nature of the economy in general and New York’s in particular, there may be something to that last worry – and if so, it’s something to consider when trying to decide how doomed the Republican Party is in the Northeast.

Consensus is I beat Patterson

Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Monday, June 1st at 4:08PM EST (link)

I bet my name recognition and favorables are better. I can’t find one neighbor, friend or Democrat stalwart that privately likes the guy.

When Patterson’s reelection announcement came in over CNBC the whole floor was laughing.

New York is still losing population faster than any other state in the nation. By election time there should be about 10 of us left.

We are also rapidly losing all the millionaires Dave was going to tax as a way to make up the budget deficit. My guess is we ultimately ask China or Donald Trump for a loan. On second thought, Trump probably thinks NY is too big a credit risk.

This is all proof that mind control does work and zombies do exist. Why else would people continue to vote for their demise by voting for Democrat’s in NY?

“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

It's a waiting game

Guliani’s no lock to run. After that it’s Lazio or some other unknown, who even Patterson is competative against in the General. The NY Republican Party is in a bit of disarray after NY-20. Every one is waiting on every one else’s definitive move.

Here’s a possible scenario: Guliani makes the calculation that Cuomo won’t run and declares. Then, Cuomo, “in the interest of the state” runs at the last possible minute, and wins in a squeaker. It all depends on deadlines and the economy come January 2010.

Well, Cuomo does have until January 2010 to file.

Which is… wow, only seven months from now. Time flies.

Looks pretty good for him. It’s a game of chicken. Cuomo is raising money for his AG re-election campaign, but I imagine that the money could easily be transferred to a Gov. bid.

Meanwhile, Guiliani isn’t raising money, and one needs considerable sums to run in NY. This of course is not to say that he couldn’t raise the money needed, but each day that passes is a day lost. It’s pretty clear he won’t run against Cuomo.

Anyway, I’d say that there’s a 75% chance that the state of NY will have a Democratic Gov. Come January 2011.

Don't forget the racial angle in all this.

Will Cuomo want to try to unseat a sitting black governor – even an unpopular one – and risk a backlash from his party’s base?

Cuomo Will Run

Andrew Cuomo is being very clever these days.

All he has to do is wait, for now. Paterson is so unpopular that it’s easy to imagine Party leaders going to Paterson and telling him not to run, thank you And then Cuomo is home free.

Hey, Cuomo called for lower taxes and less government spending the other day — a stronger message than most NY State Republicans are broadcasting!

Cuomo’s not my cup of tea but it’s hard not to agree with him when he expresses ideas like that.

That was how the democrats started their takeover

Say a couple conservative platitudes, enough uneducated moderates bite and vote for the dem, and then they got to DC and are giving reach arounds to Reid, Pelosi, and Obama

“The accumluated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout, “Save Us!”….and I’ll look down and whisper, “No”…The Watchmen

Er, well...

I guess.

Cuomo wouldn’t go to Washington of course; he’s already been there.

Republicans need to act like principled Republicans and differentiate themselves, or Cuomo will roll right in. (Paterson is toast.)

We need a good candidate who can argue convincingly why Republican solutions are the best way. Otherwise we are cooked.
