Rep Alan Grayson (D-FL), Freshman Congressional Idiot.

And *I* want a pony.

The moral of this story?

Rep. Alan Grayson was standing in the middle of Disney World when it hit him: What Americans really need is a week of paid vacation.

So on Thursday, the Florida Democrat will introduce the Paid Vacation Act — legislation that would be the first to make paid vacation time a requirement under federal law.

Don’t let Congressmen go to Disney World. As Allahpundit put it, “One fun ride on the teacups and they’re ready to lay down a mandate for 300 million people.”  Particularly when we’re in the middle of an economic downturn and a rising unemployment rate – and if you don’t get why either’s important in this context, I suggest that you give Rep. Grayson’s office a call; he may be hiring.

Moe Lane

PS: You know how you know when you’ve said something dumb in this business?  When even a reliably Democrat-friendly media entity like Politico can’t help but snark.  From later on:

So far, no group has come out in opposition of the bill. Nor has anyone announced opposition to roller coaster rides, cookouts on the beach or salt-water taffy on the boardwalk.

You can almost see the Politico ruffling Grayson’s hair and telling him what a big Congressman he’s getting to be, there.

What is being sought, as a guise of “vacation”, is really an effort for our federal government to encroach more on what we do, and, what companies do.

Forget it. Vacation time is none of their business and should stay out of this all together.

I'm sure sole proprietorships will love this mandate

.. or at least their spouses will :)

The singer may have crooned “I left my heart in San Francisco” but for Rep. Grayson, the lyric runs:

I left my brain in DisneyWorld

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

to take with me on my vacation. The permanent vacation a lot of us will get if these idiots don’t keep slapping stupid mandates on our employers.

10 years ago the San Francisco City Council came within 3 votes of allowing a voucher program for the homeless of San Francisco to buy one cocktail.

The reasoning was that people who worked could have a cocktail at the end of a hard day so why not let the homeless and the destitute have a cocktail also.

I swear to you this is a true story.

The vote was defeated when it was pointed out that the vast majority of the homeless are drunks or drug addicts.

A great opportunity to teach our values, not laugh this off

tankertodd (Diary) Friday, May 22nd at 12:12AM EST (link)

We shouldn’t let this one pass by. Here’s a great example for our leaders to illustrate our values rather than simply laughing this off or voting no, or bury this in committee. Bring this out and discuss it.

This, like a lot of other government programs, sound great. Heck, I agree with him: everyone needs some vacation time. Without vacation time I become a crummy employee. But the problem is:
1. Why is the Federal Government getting involved in this?
2. Should the Federal Government get involved in this?
3. How can such “noble” goals be achieved through means other than Federal mandates? Did the good congressman even consider other approaches to achieving his goal? Did he study the problem or did Disney slip some money into his freezer?
4. What is the role of the Federal Government in a contract between a firm and its employee?
5. What is the cost?
6. Why don’t some employers give vacation time? Do they have a good reason? (e.g. seasonal, high turnover, other perks, etc.)

It’s no longer enough to laugh at this stuff. LOTS of folks will immediately get jazzed by this. We must tell them why it’s a bad idea. They will not get it on their own. If we can convince a majority of the voters that this is a bad idea, then we can retake government. If not, it’s time to move to the Islands because the French are moving in.

executive pay set by the government
government selected and paid thugs to protest and riot for me.

go on vacation and for how long. Plus during the Communist regime when the Iron Curtain was up, the people where also told where they could go and how much money they could spend. Of course, the money came from the government, ie, from the people who paid into it and thus given back to them. But still, the government gave the vacationers money which correctly belonged to the people in the first place.
Oh, and one more thing, that individual was only able to travel alone and had to leave the family behind.

Just FYI.

He’s a Democrat.

These days, there are only two reasons a person would be a Democrat:

1. Because they are an idiot.
2. For all the free* gifts.

* Sure, YOU understand TANSTAAFL, but it’s beyond the understanding of actual or potential Democrats. Besides, many of them are just parasites anyway, so all the bennies really ARE “free” to them.

When I started with a new employer a couple of years ago, I could choose my benefits ala carte.
Paid holidays, yes or no.
0, 1, 2, or 3 weeks vacation.
Health Insurance, yes or no.
Employer-sponsored IRA, (no matching funds), yes or no.

My final hourly rate was determined based on what benefits I chose.

Every employee in the company has that choice.

Nice to see we have someone who doesn’t think we should be able to choose what benefits we have.

I’d like to add, my son and I had a GREAT week vacation in Florida, including Disney, a couple of weeks ago. An unpaid week off had no effect on my enjoyment of the vacation.

Don't be upset if this works eventually

I am surprised they have not campaigned on this … this would be an entitlement that needs no federal budget and there are a lot of voters would never question the impact.

The goal is turn our country into Europe. I lived overseas for many years and my European friends would recoil in horror that I did not have six weeks of vacation every year. I had a French boss that I could not even reach for the month of August.

Of course they never wanted to discuss comparative economic growth rates.

You guys need to lighten up!

General_Confusion (Diary) Friday, May 22nd at 11:17AM EST (link)

This won’t cost the federal government a thing! (except for the cost of the new Office of Vacation Compliance bureaucracy. But look at all the new jobs created. It’s a win/win scenario!)

A unfunded mandate here and an unfunded mandate there and eventually your talking real money.

and if the goal is to alleviate work place stress, then employers should kick-in first class seating for any vacation over 500 miles. Riding in coach with the chickens can be very stressful indeed.
